Matt DamonIn the latest issue of GQ, Matt Damon talks about how, when they were younger, he and Ben Affleck wanted to buy the exact same car. But each tried to talk the other out of it, "Because we knew it would just be so gay to get the same car." Maybe not the best choice of words, either.

TMZ had qualms with the usage of "gay" -- since it's not exactly politically correct to use the word "gay" to mean "bad" or "negative." But then, after thinking about it -- for two best friends who wrote and starred in the same movie, won an Oscar together and have generally been linked together for their entire careers -- buying the exact same car really is sooooo gay!

61. He's from Boston. The way he is meaning the word gay is pretty much slang around the Boston area. Gay means like goofy, queer, embarrassing. He doesn't mean it all in the way of two gay men's relationship. The word really means a totally different thing in this context, but you wouldn't pick up on that unless you were from here.

65. HELLO!!! He didn't want everybody to think they were gay by having the same car because they WERE doing each other...Maybe they're married now but that doesn't mean they weren't 'hunting buddies' then. I'm a gay man and always thought they were a bit closer than close.

75. I've been having a very lively debate about this very subject on my blog, jestertunes.com.

The fact of the matter is, generally, the use of the word "gay" as a synonym for "lame" or "stupid" is offensive. It's a subversive tactic by homophobes to further denegrate and oppress homosexuals.

I think in this particular context, Matt Damon is not trying to say that buying matching cars would be "lame." He's saying that buying matching cars would further offer evidence that he and Ben were more than just friends.
