Victim of Dog Bite May Have Had Heart Attack

Police tell TMZ that the victim of the dog attack at Ving Rhames' home could have had a heart attack, since none of the wounds -- on his arms and legs only -- appear to have been life threatening. They speculate that he was possibly running for his life after a confrontation with the dogs. TMZ has learned the 40-year-old caretaker lived at the house and had been an employee of the actor for two years. Tragically, police say the man fed and cared for the animals on a daily basis.
Ving Rhames House
A total of four dogs were taken away by Animal Control; three Mastiffs each weighing 160-190 lbs. and one English Bulldog weighing 100-150 lbs. The property contains two connected houses, both owned by Rhames. According to police, the dogs -- including nine puppies -- all live in one house.

In a press conference today, a police spokesman said the victim appears to have jumped the fence to try to get away from the dogs, and died sometime early this morning. We're told there are additional dogs on property, but they do not roam free. The dogs that attacked had access to the front of the house.

Cops say the dogs are very friendly, and as we reported, police are not aware of any previous problems. They do not anticipate charging Rhames with a crime, as this appears to have been a "pure accident." The animals have been quarantined and will be held over the weekend at an undisclosed shelter. Blood samples will be taken to determine if they have rabies or other dangerous diseases.

We're told Ving is on location out of country.

152. #44 "Michael Eisner"-- Where exactly can I find these "numerous quotes and interviews with Rhames saying how proud he is of his vicious dogs" ? Were those his words? Did he literally say "I'm proud of my vicious dogs" ?! Or did you just through the "vicious" in there for drama ? Nice try. If you can't back up your claims by providing a source, than it was never said, was it ?! You're such a weenie. And you can quote me on that.

153. I have a English Bulldog they don't weigh 150 lbs mine is 60. They are not vicous. I also have a BullMastiff and he is sweet. To say he was running for his life is wrong, you don't know this! It gives breeds of dogs bad reputations. The moron who mentioned PitBulls there wasn't one even there. I have rasied pits and mine died of old age and never bit anyone. Also these dogs have been refered to as Mastiffs and BullMastiffs they are two different breeds, get it right. Neither one is vicous. They are not known to be biters. They guard and hold, people not attack.

154. #131 and #152 the dog in Turner and Hooch was a Dogue de Bordeaux aka French Mastiff- This breed is from the Bordeaux region of France the history of the breed is that the region ruled by English kings, it is likely that the English Mastiff was bred with the lareger gaurd dogs of the region- Spanish Mastiffs also may have been used, there are many types of mastiffs they are not all of same temperment - because I am a certified Temperment Tester- I must be familiar with all breeds. It is a know fact that the Dogue de Bordeaux does NOT tolerate intruders. In the past it has been used for animal baiting. As far as being as docile as a teacup poodle??? there is a whole other story that goes into genetics and line breeding - size does not make a dog docile- Responsible, careful breeding programs a knowledge of genetics, and pedigrees produces dogs people can live with. Bad breeding and bad owners make for dogs that are a menace to society.

155. hey post # 133, you are 100% right. i have a male 240lb english mastiff , and he is harmless. would he bite or put you down if you entered his home without me there?, probably! do i treat him like an animal who is viscous ... hell no.. hes my best friend, as i type he is lying rite next to me.. do my neighbors like such a big dog in they're neighborhood... ? oh yeah , i haven't met one person who don't like my dog.. he loves everyone. kids , get horsy rides on his back .. what dog , would do that? is he trained , sure , he has his c.g.c. and is working on his t.d.i. my boxer , which are supposed to be great dogs , i would have to worry about her more than i would about my mastiff. never met a breed so loyal and loving. so don't mistaken a mastiff for a viscous dog. own one and let me know how they are .. you will be hooked .. i plan on getting 2 more. not for breeding , but for my own pleasure , they are great..!!!!

156. As has been stated before we are all speculating on what could have gone wrong. Having lived with mastiffs for 39 years it breaks my heart to learn one could have been involved. But being an experienced dog person, it would make more sense to me that the gentleman was probably trying to break up a dog fight and got bit in the process. Seeing dogs in a fight can be a very scarey thing and could have brought about a heart attack. In all my years with mastiffs I have NEVER been bitten by one. They truly are gentle devoted giants or as my neighbors refer to them "big teddy bears".

157. English bulldogs are THE nicest dogs - and there's NO way it's an english bulldog if it weighed 105 lbs +. I have a pretty huge one, and he's 80 lbs.

158. It's possible that the guy was suffering from a heart attack and the dogs were trying to help him. I think it is very unlikely that dogs that have been cared for by this man for years would attack to kill him. The breeds Rhames owns are very loyal and protective of those that they know. They are typically only agressive towards complete strangers.

159. People get hurt and killed, because of CARELESS IDIOTS who own protective breeds. I have a breed that has a natural dislike for strangers. He is no threat to anyone (unless they break in *and* don’t back off), because I won’t have it. I have him neutered, utd on shots, routine vet care, doesn’t roam the neighborhood, leashed when out with me, properly/safely contained in a fence when outdoors for #1 & #2, otherwise kept indoors, etc. I would never in a million years put innocent people at risk. He’s not a ‘man-eater’ anyhow, I wouldn’t have such a thing. Especially, with children in the house. He’s a good dog, who loves his home and family. Adores the kids and lives for playing fetch with them. He will bring them a ball for hours on end. It TRULY is the bad owners to blame, like #156...who shouldn't even own a pet rock. People like that beat or teach these dogs to be aggressive, which most often backfires and makes a coward fear-biter instead. So much for their 'bad-arse' protection dogs, nothing more than FEAR-BITERS. How tough, lol.

160. As a Bullmastiff owner, I'm puzzled, but at the same time I can understand (if that makes any sense). I puzzled because, he cared for them for 2 yrs and they turned on him. I'm of the thought that it is never the dog, it is the owner. That being said, he had to have done something to make them attack. They are pack animals and he may not have been perceived as the Alpha or he mistreated them in some way. That is the thing... I would never let someone else care for my dog for long periods of time...

But, I can see why they didn't maul him to death and he only had bites on his arms and legs. The Bullmastiff was originally known as the gamekeeper’s dog. They were breed to guard against poachers. The dog’s instinct is to hold the intruder until police arrive with Bullmastiff’s are the most loving, loyal, intelligent, dogs I have ever been around. I'm afraid they will get a bad rap because of this incident.

161. I think this was blown out and the media should have not made it seem like the attack was what killed this man. They should have waited for the autopsy first before commenting on the Gentle Giants. Also doesnt this guy Rhames have cameras on the property I would assume so most celebrities do. I have a Mastiff weighing 230lbs and anyone can walk into my house with no problem and by the way there is no such Bulldog weighing 190 or 220 that is to funny even a Bullmastiff arent that big only an English Mastiff can accomplish that weight.

162. To #135: Good call. You done good, son.

As for Rhames: his wife, the lovely young white country-music singer LeeAnn Rhames, has been noticeably silent about this situation with his husband's dogs. Speak up, woman! Stand by yer man!

A prediction, if you will: I bet Barry Bonds will end up being involved in similar dangerous dog problems. He lives in the same area, if you know what I mean.

164. #159 The fawn colored one in some of the pictures was an English Mastiff... Correct… But I have seen pictures of the one of the other dogs involved and one of the other dog was defiantly a Bullmastiff. I own a Bullmastiff and there was no mistaking that the other dog was a bully…

165. DancingSpiderman, LeAnn Rimes is not married to Ving Rhames but I'm guessing you already know that 'cause no one's that dumb..

Wait to see what happens people speculation is just that.
