Victim of Dog Bite May Have Had Heart Attack

Police tell TMZ that the victim of the dog attack at Ving Rhames' home could have had a heart attack, since none of the wounds -- on his arms and legs only -- appear to have been life threatening. They speculate that he was possibly running for his life after a confrontation with the dogs. TMZ has learned the 40-year-old caretaker lived at the house and had been an employee of the actor for two years. Tragically, police say the man fed and cared for the animals on a daily basis.
Ving Rhames House
A total of four dogs were taken away by Animal Control; three Mastiffs each weighing 160-190 lbs. and one English Bulldog weighing 100-150 lbs. The property contains two connected houses, both owned by Rhames. According to police, the dogs -- including nine puppies -- all live in one house.

In a press conference today, a police spokesman said the victim appears to have jumped the fence to try to get away from the dogs, and died sometime early this morning. We're told there are additional dogs on property, but they do not roam free. The dogs that attacked had access to the front of the house.

Cops say the dogs are very friendly, and as we reported, police are not aware of any previous problems. They do not anticipate charging Rhames with a crime, as this appears to have been a "pure accident." The animals have been quarantined and will be held over the weekend at an undisclosed shelter. Blood samples will be taken to determine if they have rabies or other dangerous diseases.

We're told Ving is on location out of country.

16. #1, Bella - your comments are unbelievably ignorant. That's akin to saying raceA and raceB = criminal behavior. Stereo-typing dogs is ignorant. It has been proven over and over that training and caring for is what matters, NOT the type of breed. While certain breeds may be pre-disposed to certain traits, training can, will, and has overcome that.

Also, by viewing the pictures, the fawn colored dog (light tan) appears to be English Mastiff, not bull. Bull Mastiffs do not typically get that large, whereas English do. But we rely on what the media tells us. Perhaps they are bull mastiffs.

Until we know for sure what happened, everything is pure speculation. But as another pointed out, dogs are very attuned to human pain. They know before we know something is wrong.

17. Whatever happened to "don't bite the hand that feeds you"?

It surprises me that a dog would attack someone that it has known for two years, that was a household member and was the person who fed it on a regular basis.

18. I work for the Humane Society of Missouri, and in my experience and through my knowledge of different breeds, Mastiffs are by FAR one of the most friendly breeds. And in fact, if you look at statistics, aside from Pit Bulls, small dogs have the highest amount of bite cases, at least in my area.

Who know's what happened here.. it could have been anything. Again, with my knowledge, something must have happened.. this man has been living and caring for these dogs for two years. Especially since the owner is an actor who is probably out of town a lot, if this man was the primary caregiver, these dogs wouldn't have had a reason to maliciously attack him.

19.
This man took care of the dogs. They would not harm him. If anything, they were probably trying to revive him after he went down. The ignorance of some people never ceases to amaze me.

20. Response to comment # 1- English bulldogs are not 100- 150 lbs. They range in average from 55-75 lbs. Most American Bulldogs are 95-125 lbs. Bulldogs in general are very placid goffy animals. American bulldogs are often associated with "bully" breeds that include pitbulls. But they are not traditionally aggressive animals. Most dog behavior problems are the owners fault. So stop blaming the dogs and strat blaming the irresponsible owners. Do you research before pointing the finger ...

23. I think this was definitely an accident! I have owned 3 mastiffs and mastiffs adore people and are extremely unlikely to bite a human. They are extremely smart and gentle animals despite their size. He must have died of a heart attack and they were trying to wake him. Sad

24. Ok as the owner of an American Pitbull Terrier, I first must state, I take offense that this is somehow being translated into a pitbull attack. NONE of the dogs involved were APBTs. Next, if the police are stating that the dogs are sweethearts, one can only wonder if they had been mistreated by the caretaker. Just a thought. I am very sorry for the man whether he died because of a dog attack or a heart attack...either way it was tragic that this 40 year old is dead.

26. The guy probably had a heart attack and died. Dogs are animals, if their owner dies they will randomly bite them to either get them to move or because they are hungry. Assumin this guys heart attack would be caused by the dogs is Asinine. And pitbulls are loving pets so long as they have the right owner.... fing vick....

27. How about the guy could have had a heart attack and the dogs found him... If he lived there for 2 years they know the guy -- likely not going to attack him. The dogs could have bit him trying to get him to move.

a 100-150 pound English Bulldog... --- not likely... perhaps a 100+ lb Olde English Bulldogge --- dont think the English bulldog gets that big.

28. How many dogs does this guy have? I am all for having dogs, and have posted that a few own our family as well, including a great big cuddly teddy bear rott that is licking my toes as I type.

With that said, if I am remembering correctly, that is 1 bulldog, 3 mastiffs, other dogs on the property that didn't have access to outside AND 9 puppies?

As a dog owner, I do not believe that these dogs would intentionally attack their caregiver without warrant. Something happened, since I did not know there were puppies on the premises as well, that raises an entire new question to me that maybe it was a mother being overprotective of her young. Who knows, but from what I seen of those dogs on the clip...they are healthy looking, friendly to the animal control people, and look like happy dogs.

Maybe he got a little too close to the mothers young? who knows, but it's now another scenario.

30. Please a bulldog will not get up to 150lbs, I own one and he is maxed at 60lbs. I guess blowing the story up sells. May his family have peace at a tragic time.
