Victim of Dog Bite May Have Had Heart Attack

Police tell TMZ that the victim of the dog attack at Ving Rhames' home could have had a heart attack, since none of the wounds -- on his arms and legs only -- appear to have been life threatening. They speculate that he was possibly running for his life after a confrontation with the dogs. TMZ has learned the 40-year-old caretaker lived at the house and had been an employee of the actor for two years. Tragically, police say the man fed and cared for the animals on a daily basis.
Ving Rhames House
A total of four dogs were taken away by Animal Control; three Mastiffs each weighing 160-190 lbs. and one English Bulldog weighing 100-150 lbs. The property contains two connected houses, both owned by Rhames. According to police, the dogs -- including nine puppies -- all live in one house.

In a press conference today, a police spokesman said the victim appears to have jumped the fence to try to get away from the dogs, and died sometime early this morning. We're told there are additional dogs on property, but they do not roam free. The dogs that attacked had access to the front of the house.

Cops say the dogs are very friendly, and as we reported, police are not aware of any previous problems. They do not anticipate charging Rhames with a crime, as this appears to have been a "pure accident." The animals have been quarantined and will be held over the weekend at an undisclosed shelter. Blood samples will be taken to determine if they have rabies or other dangerous diseases.

We're told Ving is on location out of country.

31. To Bella-

I would assume you never have owned one then. I just put one down who was 14 years old, I also own two English Bulldogs and a chihuahua. The chihuahua is the only one who has ever come close to biting someone. Dogs are a product of their enviornment. When a pitbull attacks someone it is becuase their owner raised it that way. You should do a little research before forming an opinion. All dogs deserve love unfortunantly people choose to use them for their own selfish reasons. Just as the animal control employee stated small dogs bite more often than big dogs including pit bulls. I feel sorry for everyone involved.

32. Didn't the report say that he was in an area the dogs couldn't get to him?
I thought he jumped the fence?
If so, he would of had to have been bitten, jumped the fence, then got away and died. The heart attack could have been what caused them to attack him, while he was in the fenced area. If he was screaming or acting weird they might have bitten him to stop him????? sad.....................

33. I agree with #4 and #13.

Bulldogs and mastiffs were bred to PROTECT human lives. The dogs that did attack humans ( in earlier centuries) were bred out. People don't need Mastiffs to attack. Their form of defense is to pounce on the intruder and wait for the owner to come while they bark. That's all.

and #8(GIRL), you are quite uninformed if you have never heard of that. You must never have played with a dog in your life. Rough physical play isn't uncommon and games of chase, especially with hunting breeds or herding ones, are games that the dogs would love. Read before you comment next time

34. These dogs are not known for attacking people! I think the guy had a heart attack and the dogs were trying to drag him to safety or to someone for help!
Do not harm these dogs!

35. Maybe everyone including the speculating police department should shut up till the autopsy is in. Everyone is so quick to jump the gun and since they didn't see what happened they really don't know. Maybe there are security cameras on the property which may tell the real story.

36. The dogs are bull mastiffs NOT english bulldogs nor pitbulls - and 150 to 190 lbs is not unusual for this huge breed. My uncle had one, which was very good natured, but strong, weighed in at 145 lbs and would play with a bowling ball because his jaws would pop a basketball.

37. ALL DOGS CAN BITE... I think it may have been because there were puppies present. Depending on how old the puppies were, mama dog could have been acting defensively.

38. nine puppies... sounds like the dogs weren't neutered and there was a protective momma in the bunch. Bull Mastiffs aren't vicious, but when hormones are running high and resources are to be protected dogs will attack. And if you get the pack going, pack mentality sets in and it is very hard to turn off the prey drive.

Another reason to spay and neuter.

39. I have three dogs, a blue Pitbull, a Shiba Inu and very short Jack Russell, and the Jack Russell runs the show around here. My Pitbull is the most gentle of the three. All animals have the ability to attack at any moment....they are animals. You must be prepared for any sudden change in the animals character or mood. I feel sorry for what happened to the man, but it appears that these were not vicious dogs by nature, and were not taught to be either.

40. I can't believe all the touchy-feely IDIOTS who SYMPATHIZE WITH THE DOGS!!!

They showed how much they loved the human being when they bit him.

41. Loved #7 - 9 and 10. Rhymes is nothing but a back yard breeders with no conscience

Like we really NEED more dogs in the world. I used to like him too, no more.

42. #30 YOU ARE INCORRECT. I own English Mastiffs. The dog in the picture is an English Mastiff, NOT a bullmastiff. Bullmastiffs are shorter and have shorter snouts than the dog pictured twice. It is clearly an English Mastiff. Bullmastiffs are 60% mastiff and 40% bulldog. 160-190lbs is the correct weight range for the typical mastiff.

43. We can see what type of person you are Randy, #37. Not a good one.

Maybe people with a soul care about animals. Michael Vick is a killer.

44. Randy (#37),
You don't have to be a "touchy-feely type" to recognize that incidents happen all the time where an owner faints or otherwise stops moving, and the animals pull and prod on them in an effort to get them to move.
Those of us who have pointed that out are merely being more logical than those who can't even discern between breeds.

45. I cannot imagine that the dogs would have done this without being provoked some how. mastif...bull mastiff....either type... they are all very very gentle! I feel very badly for the man but I pray the dont blame the dogs for this! Even in the video the dogs are wagging their tales excited to see all the people.... Something else must have happend..... Those breeds just dont do this!!!!
signed...loyal owner of both breeds!!!!!!
