Victim of Dog Bite May Have Had Heart Attack

Police tell TMZ that the victim of the dog attack at Ving Rhames' home could have had a heart attack, since none of the wounds -- on his arms and legs only -- appear to have been life threatening. They speculate that he was possibly running for his life after a confrontation with the dogs. TMZ has learned the 40-year-old caretaker lived at the house and had been an employee of the actor for two years. Tragically, police say the man fed and cared for the animals on a daily basis.
Ving Rhames House
A total of four dogs were taken away by Animal Control; three Mastiffs each weighing 160-190 lbs. and one English Bulldog weighing 100-150 lbs. The property contains two connected houses, both owned by Rhames. According to police, the dogs -- including nine puppies -- all live in one house.

In a press conference today, a police spokesman said the victim appears to have jumped the fence to try to get away from the dogs, and died sometime early this morning. We're told there are additional dogs on property, but they do not roam free. The dogs that attacked had access to the front of the house.

Cops say the dogs are very friendly, and as we reported, police are not aware of any previous problems. They do not anticipate charging Rhames with a crime, as this appears to have been a "pure accident." The animals have been quarantined and will be held over the weekend at an undisclosed shelter. Blood samples will be taken to determine if they have rabies or other dangerous diseases.

We're told Ving is on location out of country.

46. In a 1999 interview with the Los Angeles Times, the Pulp Fiction star showed off his “petrifying” Ambullneo mastiff named Samson and his three mastiff puppies — Storm, Scorsese and Cage (the latter two were named after director Martin Scorsese and actor Nicolas Cage, with whom Rhames worked on the film Bringing Out the Dead).

He also talked about his 170-pound Fila Brasileiro named Kong.

“The dog was actually bred to guard slaves,” Rhames said. “It was the only dog they found that had the temperament to guard a slave. It could be around you every day, but if you tried to run away, it would deal with you like it never saw you before.”

The Times reporter joked, “Just as you are thinking how helpful this will be to the forensic specialists, he pulls the dog away with his free hand before it can playfully disembowel you.”

47. Look, Black guys like dangerous and intimidating dogs.

It's an ego trip with no regard to people's safety.

Ving Rhames is a menace and this is his fault.

There are numerous quotes and interviews with Rhames saying how proud he is of Visvicious dogs.

48. THE DOGS are AMBULLNEO MASTIFFS...basically mutts. Bred for everything BUT tempermant. And the other a Fila...which is also know for its aggressive nature.

Mastiffs..( English Mastiffs) are the foundation breed. They are calm, gentle and very sweet. I have a 2yr old and she is a gem. SHAME on TMZ for not reporting the story properly and acurately.

49. WTF is Rhames doing with 14 dogs in his home in Brentwood, California? There are laws in place that Los Angeles County residents cannot harbor so many dogs on their premises. There were too many dogs living in that home. The cops and animal control officers need to stop their b.s. about how friendly those dogs are. Dogs are dogs!

Dogs have a keen memory. If that caretaker became disenchanted with his dead-end job for the wealthy actor, the dogs sensed his resentment toward them and simply attacked. All it takes is for one postpartum bitch to mentally snap -- the pack follows. It's everyone for himself!!!

51. Read the story people! Just because these are large dogs doesn't mean they are out to harm someone based on their size. We as a society TEACH our dogs to be cruel and attack......Michael Vick....They aren't just born that way.
And there is NO WAY an English Bulldog can keep up with a couple of mastifs. Bella please get your story straight.

52. To # 7: No, that is not correct. This breed of dog is doing what it has been bred for many generations to do: Kill. Breed one agressive dog to an even bigger more aggressive dog and before you know it the dogs brain does not work like a noraml dogs brain. The part that controls agression takes over the rest. Dogs don't kill people because they are haveing a heart attack, You would have a heart attack too if 600 pounds of vicious dogs ripped you to pieces.

54. Thank you #41!! As a Mastiff owner I know that if these Mastiff's were trying to attack this guy the bite marks would have been deeper. It is clear here that the bites did no fatal injury. If the bite marks were on his neck, they were probably trying to drag him to safety like they do their young...by the neck! The animal haters and predjudice people are just trying to point their nasty little fingers. Mastiff's are the most gentle dog on the planet. A little dog will bite before these gentle giants would. I guess ignorance is bliss. And if you no anything, which you obviously don't, no one would ever use a pure Mastiff as a fighting dog....sorry to say it but that would be a garaunteed loss if the Mastiff doesn't put a pit down in 30 seconds, a pit has more stamina and would simply wait until the Mastiff tires then take him down. Mastiff's are not fighters...what a bunch of morons!

55. I trained those dogs and I know they would never hurt anyone.

56. These dogs are 3 Mastiff and one English Bulldog. As a giant dog breed owner, we have a Saint Bernard that weighs 180. I can tell you that the breeds that Ving has, and the dogs in question are very gentle and loving dogs by nature. I challenge anyone to try and find bite reports on these 2 breeds, they must be all but non-existent. Now, they might try and slobber you to death, but otherwise, they are pretty harmless! These are not pitbulls, and the correlation between Ving and Vick are ridiculous. You people should do your homework before posting such BS!

57. Having owned English Mastiff's for many years, I can verify that they are truly gentle giants. What happened to this gentleman was very said, but I believe in time, it will be shown that the Mastiff's did not kill this man. These dogs knew this man very well. They would not have hurt him.

58. #52: I don't care if there is a history of bites. These dogs are bred for strength and agression. Maybe not all of them, but obviously these ones were. What do people expect from them? It is their nature. They are not bred to be lap doggies but for protection and to scare people and even dog fighting.

59. I think that when the dog's are examined, the question of " why they attacked " ?
will be answered .
It will be Disgusting !

60. Mastiffs are known for being very non-aggressive. Sweetest dog I've ever owned. Maybe a different line of mastiff but the normal breed of mastiff would not hurt a flee.
