Victim of Dog Bite May Have Had Heart Attack

Police tell TMZ that the victim of the dog attack at Ving Rhames' home could have had a heart attack, since none of the wounds -- on his arms and legs only -- appear to have been life threatening. They speculate that he was possibly running for his life after a confrontation with the dogs. TMZ has learned the 40-year-old caretaker lived at the house and had been an employee of the actor for two years. Tragically, police say the man fed and cared for the animals on a daily basis.
Ving Rhames House
A total of four dogs were taken away by Animal Control; three Mastiffs each weighing 160-190 lbs. and one English Bulldog weighing 100-150 lbs. The property contains two connected houses, both owned by Rhames. According to police, the dogs -- including nine puppies -- all live in one house.

In a press conference today, a police spokesman said the victim appears to have jumped the fence to try to get away from the dogs, and died sometime early this morning. We're told there are additional dogs on property, but they do not roam free. The dogs that attacked had access to the front of the house.

Cops say the dogs are very friendly, and as we reported, police are not aware of any previous problems. They do not anticipate charging Rhames with a crime, as this appears to have been a "pure accident." The animals have been quarantined and will be held over the weekend at an undisclosed shelter. Blood samples will be taken to determine if they have rabies or other dangerous diseases.

We're told Ving is on location out of country.

61. There is WAY too much speculation going on at this point, and also a lot of various reports about what the breeds in question are. I am of the very strong opinion, that until they know FOR SURE what the breeds of the dogs actually involved are (and they can tell by the bite pattern) then they should not be mentioning breed specifics AT ALL. This happened years ago with the Presa Canario attacks, people constantly misreporting them as "Mastiffs". For those that do not know, many of these dogs are loosely considered "mastiff-type" dogs. But there is only ONE breed recognized in the U.S. as "Mastiff" and that is the English Mastiff. ALL other "mastiff-type breeds" have their own names. This is really important because the temperaments from breed to breed are VERY VERY different. They were bred for different things, and behave very differently. English Mastiffs are typically very docile and intelligent guardians. They are almost never involved in bite incidents. The same cannot be said for many of the other "mastiff-type" breeds. Without going into too long of a lecture here, the reason that many dogs can be deemed "mastiff-type" is because the mastiff is one of the oldest breeds in recorded history. So many many dogs trace back there, in various forms. The Bullmastiff (a breed developed by crossing the bulldog with the mastiff many many years ago) is not a "bad" dog, but does exhibit more aggression (generally speaking) than the English Mastiff. Additionally the Presa Canario is known to be far more aggressive than the Bullmastiff. And unfortunately the Presa tends to attract attention by those that have bad intentions with dogs (ie. the types of people that like to make pit bulls mean, etc.) I am not certain what the 4 dogs breeds are. There are no clear, unobstructed photos that I have seen of all 4. But I can say that one of them resembles an English Mastiff, but the resemblance between the English Mastiff (ie the Mastiff) and the Bullmastiff are so close (especially in poorly bred lines) that it can be very hard to tell from a bad side shot like the photos that have been released thus far. I can tell you this much. The one dog shown being lifted into the vehicle (the brindle with the white on it's chest) is NOT a Mastiff. So at least one of them is misreported. It could be a Presa, it could be another "mastiff-type" breed. But please people, don't report breed names that are inaccurate. If you don't know just say "dogs", or "large dogs" or something. Because people are so quick these days to label breeds "bad", the reporting needs to be accurate. I will never forget the flood of sicko's attracted into the Mastiff breed when the Presas killed that woman in CA years ago. All because they were falsely reported to be "Mastiffs" for weeks.

62. Being a Bull Dog and Pitbull owner/breeder these dogs are friendly as long as they all get along being together. You have to know your dog(s) personality and behaviors and tell rather being in there presence is the right time (especially females) I know from experince that Mastiffs and Bull dogs DO NOT get along. As long as you have built a good relationship with them and they can sense good things about you and they feel secure, you will not have any problems. If you are raising them to be guard dogs then you must be consistent about it. However, in this man's case I wonder if he has been mistreating them and they decided to finally turn on him.

63. This is a very tragic story and my heart goes out to this man's family but I have owned mastiffs and currently own a bulldog. All my dogs have been completely harmless and over loving especially to children. I am 100% confident to leave my bulldog in the room alone with my 15 month old daughter. I think there is something more going on here.

64. Ok I typed this out before but it didn't show up. Can the news (hey hear me TMZ and others???) Please leave out the breed names until you have it right and know for sure? Because the brindle dog with the white blaze on it's chest being loaded into a vehicle is NOT a mastiff. I repeat NOT a mastiff. It is probably one of the "mastiff-type" breeds bred for very very different things that the MASTIFF which is known for hundreds of years as a gentle FAMILY guardian. Please do not label all of these other breeds, and these mastiff mixes that are bred for agression, as "mastiff". It attracts bad people into a good breed, and it puts a false stigma on the breed that is undeserved.
And why are pit bulls being brought into this conversation. No one has suggested these dogs were pitbulls and no photos of any pit bulls have been shown as of yet. So why don't people just cool their heels and get their facts straight.

65. I think that it is sad that this happened. DON'T blame the animals. As many have stated before, this man had taken care of them for 2 years, they new something was wrong!!!! He fell, they tried to help, the only way animals know how, that is to bite and pull. I feel for the family and the owner!!!!

66. Could it be that these dogs who are concidered gentle for their size become more dangerous when they are in a pack?

67. I think it's complete Bulls*&t the way everyone assumed that the dogs killed the man - it's everywhere. At least find out what happened first before getting all up in arms about it and causing a national debate on breeds of dogs. I have a chow chow and you would never know it by her temperment - she thinks she's a baby... and i know how people can get with different breeds of dogs... mastiffs are absolutely wonderful dogs to have. i guessed that something happened to the man at first, and it is not uncommon for ANY breed to mess with a human if something has happened to them (as horrible as that may sound)

this is a horrible accident, and i hope the best for the man's family......

68. Properly trained mastiffs are beautiful and gentle. Period. Those dogs in question certainly looked well socialized as well. Sure didn't look vicious to me. I think alot of people here who haven't had the pleasure of knowing a mastiff are simply intimidated by the sheer size of these noble babies. So let's all wait and see what the authorities determine to have happened. If these dogs were tea cup chiuaua's., would people believe this man was "nipped" to death? Give me a break. After all, it was said the bite marks he recieved were not fatal. All you sissies need to quit being afraid of a big dog.

70. I know of a mastiff that bit the head off a baby.

71. True--properly rained Mastiffs are quite gentle as are Bulldogs but keep in mind that ANY dog mistreated and put in the wring hands can be dangerous!!

72. The last sentence of this story says that blood samples will be taken to see if the dogs have rabies or other dangerous diseases. Is this someone's interpretation of what the cops said or did the cops say this??

This is directly from the first site on google when I typed in rabies test.

---The only way to be 100% sure that an animal is rabid is to perform a direct fluorescent antibody test (dFA) on the brain tissue, which requires that the animal be euthanized. This is the most rapid and reliable test for rabies and it has been used for more than 40 years.---

73. It's racist to name the breed of a dog.

74. its ashamed that people are assuming these dogs did this without even knowing the facts. mastiffs are some of the most loyal, friendly dogs around. i know this b/c i have one myself, along with a rottweiler and pitbull. none of my dogs are mean whatsoever. poodles can be mean if they are raised that way. the only known fact is that this man cared for and fed these dogs for two years...THEY DID NOT ATTACK HIM!!! i'm willing to bet that all of the bite marks are superficial.

people condemning the dogs without knowing the facts are idiots. once again, i'm willing to bet these dogs did nothing wrong.

on that note...god bless the mans family. its definitely a tragedy that he died from whatever the cause may be.

75. # 64 Birdie-- I, personally, don't believe these dogs are "gentle for their size". I think they r the most gentle dogs on the planet, regardless of their size or breed. I've owned 2, one was an English and recently adopted a French (dogue de bordeaux) mastiff, who is only 16 weeks now. Sweet puppies, sweet as adolesents, and my english was the sweetest adult dog I've ever known. Growing up my family always had dogs, mutts...a german shepard, old english sheepdogs, labs, and mastiffs. And I can honestly say that mastiffs by FAR had the best temperment. My sister has 2 chiwawas right now, and they scare the HECK out of me!
As for being with the pack, dogs usually consider the family they live with as their "pack". I'm sure this included this poor man who was their regular care giver as well.
He may have had a history of health problems that possibly put him at risk for a heart attack, maybe was knocked down accidently while feeding them, they began thinking he was playing....or sensed a problem.... who knows. Dogs can not only sense a person is about to have an epileptic seizure, but can also smell cancer. Weird.
