Victim of Dog Bite May Have Had Heart Attack

Police tell TMZ that the victim of the dog attack at Ving Rhames' home could have had a heart attack, since none of the wounds -- on his arms and legs only -- appear to have been life threatening. They speculate that he was possibly running for his life after a confrontation with the dogs. TMZ has learned the 40-year-old caretaker lived at the house and had been an employee of the actor for two years. Tragically, police say the man fed and cared for the animals on a daily basis.
Ving Rhames House
A total of four dogs were taken away by Animal Control; three Mastiffs each weighing 160-190 lbs. and one English Bulldog weighing 100-150 lbs. The property contains two connected houses, both owned by Rhames. According to police, the dogs -- including nine puppies -- all live in one house.

In a press conference today, a police spokesman said the victim appears to have jumped the fence to try to get away from the dogs, and died sometime early this morning. We're told there are additional dogs on property, but they do not roam free. The dogs that attacked had access to the front of the house.

Cops say the dogs are very friendly, and as we reported, police are not aware of any previous problems. They do not anticipate charging Rhames with a crime, as this appears to have been a "pure accident." The animals have been quarantined and will be held over the weekend at an undisclosed shelter. Blood samples will be taken to determine if they have rabies or other dangerous diseases.

We're told Ving is on location out of country.

76. English bulldogs do not get this big, sounds like they are talking about an American Bulldog and dogs cannot be tested for rabies by blood tests, the brain has to be sent off to a laboratory for neurological testing. Sounds like a very sad accident................

77. Please everyone know that it is a possibility the dogs bit him because he was having a heart attack!!! I know this sounds crazy but when I worked at a veterinary clinic we had a dog come in for emergency care for bite wounds from the other household dog. The dog was severely attacked because he was having seizures. This happens! It would explain why he was bitten and had been a longtime caretaker. I hope they look into this possibility.

78. A lot more severe than the dog bite injury I was called to repair last week, but my patient is still alive. A sad case here.

79. no, that comment is so ignorant. those dogs are born kind by nature, it is humans that turn them evil. learn something before you speak.

80. You people are crazy. Regardless if he died of natural causes or was mauled, whay did they bite him. Espically since he cared for them. They are after all animals and until they can communicate we will never know what makes them turn.

81. Don't hurt the dogs! I'm guessing he was playing with the dogs. That early...it's feeding time. I'm guessing he was feeing them, perhaps playing with them at the same time, and they got antsy. One dog probably was playing and another dog joined in and it got out of control. They're dogs...they don't understand when play crosses into "he is the weak guy". I feel sorry for the dogs. Somehow, they were working out of instinct.

And how horrible for all of us who have dogs. Chilling. I have a new dog....a mix. We got him at the pound with some pitbull perhaps. I am trying to do a good thing. He is amazingly smart. That could be me! That is OK. That is the price I pay for taking dogs into a completely foreign environment. Although the dogs obviously needed more stimulation. That is another OBLIGATION of being a dog owner. *toot *toot (that is my horn). My dog is in puppy/agility classes to curb his energy to destroy. Redirect, pet owners. Especially agressive dog owners.

82. Maybe they knew something was wrong with him and was trying to pull him to saftey. You know like that man and the tiger. Those are som big dogs but man they are so PRETTY. Hope it was not the dogs and they do not have to be put down. I hate to see people loose there pets but sometimes that is the best thing.

83. Thanks No. 71. I raise English Bulldogs, they rarely weigh more than 55 lbs, they are loving and sweet. Wish they would get info right before they slam a particular breed. They're probably talking about American Bulldogs, though I've never seen one that weighed 150 lbs. Anyone who owns that many dogs esp. dogs that are big have to realize that the pack mentality takes over in times of stress. If one of the dogs bit the man, the others probably joined in for whatever their reason. Any dog could bite any human at any time. That's why dog ownership goes hand and hand with responsibility. They are not humans, they are animals and we have to respect that fact. When a dog eats its own do-do, eats a baby rabbit or bites someone, everyone is shocked. This is what animals do. You have to choose carefully and then train them to be trusting, obedient and reliable.

84. It would be highly unusual for dogs that are very familiar with him to suddenly "attack". Since the bites were on his extremities and the dogs were being kept in a big family pack, it is very possible a couple of males started scuffling with each other and he tried to stop them, getting his arms/hands bitten in the process.

Also, if the bites were not life-threatening then the dogs didn't "attack" him. If they specifially attacked HIM, his face/throat would have been ripped off.

85. Typically these are very friendly and loyal breeds. This man fed the dogs for 2 years. Highly unlikely they tried to kill him. More likely that he had a heart attack, then the dogs tried lightly biting at him to rouse him. That is their instinct to do this. It is not vicious, it is out of concern for the injured animal, even if it's a human animal. Police even said the dogs were friendly and the bites did not cause the death.

86. Bulldogs are NOT nasty dogs. They are very short and probably some of the most laid canines out there.. (I'm a dog groomer, so I know these things.) Plus, they're so low to the ground for one of them to attack a person it would have to had maul the legs.. NOT the face and neck.

BLAME the owner, NOT the dog..

87. To CEE: What "makes them turn" is their instincts! No matter how long animals have been living beside humans and no matter how 'human friendly' they seem to be, and are, they are still descendents of wild animals and they still have those instincts. Until people realize that, and respect that part of them, they will continue to "turn" on us. Humans "turn" on other humans all the time and we have doctors to rationalize why we do it (i.e. all the 'psychological' disorders that are recognized now and other such medical reasons). The point being, we are all animals and can all 'turn' so quit giving the dogs a bad rap!!!

88. I want everyone to get the word out. The English Mastiff's DID NOT attack the guy that died on the grounds. Let everyone know this was a big over zealous mistake by the police when they had NO other things to say cause they released the info too soon.

The guy died of natural causes and the mastiff's were only trying to figure out what was wrong and help the guy out. The wounds from the mastiff's were ONLY Superficial like scratch marks from nails and no bite marks that broke the skin.
I'm sure we all know how that happens to us on daily occurrences in just playing with our beautiful animals.

The mastiff's were friendly wagging their tails when animal control came in to take them out. No need to subdue any of the mastiff's.

When speaking with the mastiff rescue who followed up immediately, they got all the info the could at this point. And that's the real news.

Pass it on whenever anyone says anything bad about our mastiff's.

89. Mastiffs and a bulldog. Great job having those dogs, Vingh rams or whatever your name is.

Just in case you did not know, idiot: Some dog breeds are vicious by nature. They may be sweet for most of the time, but sometimes they attack. And when they do they don't let go.
Mastiffs are like that. Bulldogs too. And pitpulls.

Seriously. What were you thinking when you got those dogs?
