Antonella's National Anthem?

Antonella BarbaAntonella Barba, the wannabeen "American Idol" with the racy pics, was recorded while "singing" the Star Spangled Banner at an event that seems to be a high school homecoming or junior high graduation -- which she then posted on her MySpace music page. Rollover Francis Scott Key!

Either nerves got to the winged songbird, or she wasn't sure which country's anthem she was singing -- because when Barba didn't quite know the words, like any pro, she just made 'em up! Genius!

Her mistakes were minor ... like changing "through the perilous fight" into "ooh the perilous fight," and "bombs bursting in air" to "bombs bursting in there." In where, gurl?! Every song should end on a good note -- although she might not have gotten that memo. Ant ends with "O'er the land of the free, IN the home of the brave!" Classic! Keep those hits coming!

16. Having observed her on AI, and being surprised with her pitch problems that she survived as long as she did, I'll bet she sang the Star Spangled Banner for the most part, Francis Scott OFF Key.

17. The National Athem is about the hymn, NOT the singer! (Whitney Houston started this mess with making the singing of the Athem about the performer, with her vocals, all the runs and crapola, instead of it being a time to respectfullly reflect on the sacrifices that have been made to make this country free!) If you have been invited to sing the Star Spangled Banner, you should have the decency, respect and intellect to memorize the words - correctly, and sing it true to the melody. If you don't have the range, which most don't, then you should repectfully decline to sing it as a soloist.

19. I prefer O Canada to your anthem-- it's a lot less violent!
We also learn in school to sing it in both English and French. I think most Americans are just indifferent to your anthem--I agree with #18; Better watch out or one of these days your kids will learn it in BOTH of your languages, English and Spanish.

20. To Maple leaf forever: our national anthem reflects the fact that we FOUGHT for our freedom. What did your country do?

I WILL NEVER EVER LEARN MY NATIONAL ANTHEM IN SPANISH. IF THEY WANT TO COME HERE, DAMN IT LEARN THE FRIGGING LANGUAGE OR GO BACK.

It's also disgusting that no one waits for the anthem to end before cheering & whooping & hollering.

And rj, you are so right. What should be done is have any of the US military bands play it & make a recording of it.

23. PLEASE, all who sing the national anthem sing it the way it should be sung so that others might sing along, It is just awful to sing it if you warble it or if you don't know it... Let someone sing it who does know how to. That is not a time to show off the singers voice, but to show off the song!

27. Actually, and sadly, very, very few kids today know the words to it. My niece was never even taught the lyrics. Very sad!

28. Come on folks, ummmm "bursting in the air" vs "bursting in theair/there" Too close to say it was a flub up. Maybe a bit of an accent you don't understand. Man too many people out there really need to get a life!

29. I'm not against someone putting their own spin on the National Anthem, so long as the melody is recongnizable. But forgetting the words (or not knowing them in the first place) is inexcusable. It should be something all kids should learn in school. That having been said, does anyone know there are three stanzas to our National Anthem? We only know the first, which is a bunch of questions. All the answers appear in the other two stanzas. Which is one reason why I feel we should have another song as our National Anthem. "God Bless America" or "America the Beautiful"? No, because God is in them. And heaven knows we can't have God in our National Anthem (tongue in cheek here, by the way). The second reason: few people can really sing it well with such a wide range. It's a poorly composed melody.
