Celebrity Justice
To Catch A Predator -- Lights, Camera, Entrapment?

A high-powered celebrity lawyer representing a doctor accused of being a sexual predator went after "Dateline NBC" yesterday in a California courtroom.

Blair Berk, whose clients include Lindsay Lohan, Mel Gibson and Halle Berry, is currently representing Dr. Maurice Wolin, a prominent oncologist. The doctor was taken down by cops last year as "Dateline" cameras rolled. Prosecutors say Dr. Wolin made plans to have a sexual encounter with someone on the Internet who he thought was a 13-year-old girl. In fact, the person who was IMing Dr. Wolin was self-proclaimed "evil vigilante" Xavier Von Erck, founder of Perverted Justice.

In yesterday's preliminary hearing in Santa Rosa California, Berk grilled a cop whose department worked with Perverted Justice and "Dateline." Berk maintained that Perverted Justice got money for snagging alleged predators and therefore entrapped her client to make a buck. She claimed Perverted Justice illegally recorded conversations with her client and also said the chat logs could not be authenticated. The logs have not been admitted into evidence.

The cop who testified yesterday called the chat logs "extensive" and "extremely incriminating." In one exchange, the doctor allegedly asked to come over to her house, but added, "But you're under 18 and I'm over. We would have to be soo careful."

NBC rented the house that was used for the doctor's alleged sexual liaison.

Xavier Von Erck will testify when the prelim resumes next month. The judge will then decide whether to admit the critical logs into evidence and then determine if Dr. Wolin will stand trial.

21. The sad part is that he will probably sue NBC for not cutting out the part where he was crying like a little girl when the cops showed up.

23. That lawyer should be rapped like the girls her client goes after, it would serve her right. Anyone who helps predators get away with their crimes should pay as well. This makes me so sick, I have seen numerous episodes of the Date Line series and it's awful! He's a doctor and an adult and should NEVER go after a child for any reason. He just doesn't want to go to prison and be beaten for a sexual crime against a child!

24. Uh I saw this episode too, and Mr. Fancy Doctor drove himself over to the teenyboppers house for sex!!! He poured frozen lemonade all over the place
Can't wait to hear how she thinks they "trapped" him!!!
On the phone he tells his wife, I made a mistake, bring a check I'll explain later and don't bring the girls (his daughters) I hope the Mother as enough sense to gets those kids away from "Daddy"

perverted justice must be pretty good, I mean they can make this man, turn on his computer, go into a chat room and write dirty things to a minor and make him drive over there all on his own!!!
WOW

I hope the judge throws them out of the court. and as for the Lawyer you see what fine upstanding celebs she caters too!!!

25. I have a serious problem with vigilante justice; we have laws and law enforcement for these things. Here we now not fighting for rights to privacy and the Government getting into all of al emails and phone calls and text messages and some feel it's ok with this. Also, this could be very dangerous for those that for those who act as decoys, not all pervs are weak.

26. Ugh.What a sleazeball.

What makes me feel sick to my stomach is that he may be able to walk free simply because he has a lot of money and can afford a good lawyer.

The legal system is a travesty.

28. Not only did this "doctor" come over to make a house call, but made a mess in the kitchen.
Keep him away from your frozen drinks.

29. I do have to say this is entrapment. They edited the part where the cops went to his house, handcuffed him, made him type all that garbage with his nose then drove him to the setup house. Poor guy.

Actually, given the evidence, save us all some money and cut his nuts off.

30. I think this series of shows takes away from Dateline’s credibility. It’s too sensational. I am all for getting child predators off the street, but how come they seem to catch so many first time offenders and very, very few people with prior records for this type of thing?

Also, with the nature of IMing, it lends itself to people lying about their age, weight, etc. because they can hide behind their screen names. I wonder how many of these guys show up really thinking that the girl they are talking to is 13?

On the other hand their not saints, but this is no America’s Most Wanted. And the fact they get paid incentives make it all the more sketchy.
