Broadway Not Aiken for Claymates Musical

An "American Idol"-themed musical inspired by Clay Aiken and his army of obsessive fans has gone up in smoke just one day after it went up in lights on a Broadway marquee. Did we mention it was about Clay Aiken obsessives?
Clay Aiken
"Idol: The Musical," billed as a satirical look at a troupe of Clay-mates from Ohio, opened two days ago at the 45th Street Theater, and promptly flopped like Clay's clammy hand on Kelly Ripa's mouth just a day later. The show's producer, Todd Ellis, said that he was shutting down the show because of a "lack of advance ticket sales, a lack of positive feedback from audience members and critics and a lack of sustainable financial resources." The rough English translation? It sucked real bad.

Backstage magazine called "Idol" "interminable, amateurish, headache-inducing," and that was just in the first paragraph of its review. Just for the record, neither Aiken nor "American Idol" the show were involved in the production.

47. TMZ has not been nice to Clay in the past and I really dont understand why. As noted in the last sentance of this article, Clay had absolutely NOTHING to do with this show. At least TMZ was nice enough to post that. I don't know how you cant give credit to someone that does so much for schools, autism awareness, Unicef and more and is going strong in his career. People try and break him down because he is a good guy and try to make up stories about him and he simply doesn't acknowledge it because he is better than that. There should be more men out there like him.

48. Hey TMZ! Thanks for mentioning Back Stage magazine's review of "Idol" in your "Claymates Musical" article.

If anyone's interested, the text to the original Casting Notice for the show -- along with access to the full Back Stage review -- can be found via this link to our Back Stage blog post about the subject at hand:

49. Clay is adorable and has an incredible voice. He had nothing to do with this broadway show. So this has nothing to do with Clay failing in anything. He is involved in so many (always successful) projects and they are all positive to help others, especially schools and children with disabilities as well as people in impoverished countries. People try and make something out of nothing to give him negative press. Shame on anyone that is involved in trying to break down someone so wonderful. Aren't we better than that? Clay will be around for a very very long time so get used to it!

50. TMZ... get your facts straight! I saw this show July 26th which was not two days ago! The show opened in Jun/July and the 45th St. Theatre is OFF Broadway. Then, last week, the casts changed. The show has been open for awhile now, not just two days! For the record, the show was awful! I think I had seen better at my high school muscial! Other then the lead singer (which wasn't bad at all) the show was pretty bad!

52. What I considered to be the lead I guess, well, she stuck out in my mind. The red head that tricked the others into their audition, her solo and "pipes" stuck with me. The singing wasn't bad by the others, she just stuck out.

53. Hey injun, FYI when Clay went to Atlanta for the AI2 auditions, he had NEVER been there before.
He went to see "IDOL the MUSICAL" when it was in previews and told his fans he was VERY uncomfortable with it. No wonder they stayed away in droves.
