John Singleton Involved in Fatal Pedestrian Accident

John SingletonJohn Singleton, acclaimed director of "Boyz in the Hood," was involved in a fatal accident Thursday night in Los Angeles.

LAPD officers tell TMZ Singleton was driving his 2001 Lexus SUV around 8:00 PM on a Los Angeles street, when a female pedestrian, not in a crosswalk, suddenly stepped in front of Singleton's car. Police say Singleton immediately stopped and waited for police and an ambulance to arrive. The 57-year-old woman, identified as Constance Russell of Los Angeles, was taken to a nearby hospital where she died Friday morning.

Police tell TMZ Singleton was not speeding at the time and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Cops say their investigation has concluded and they've determined that this was a "very, very unfortunate accident."

Singleton will not be cited for any violation.

A call placed to Singleton's agent was not immediately returned.

50. An unfortunate accident for all involved. ZXE, PuNkBrAt and probably others that I refused to read and those who have similar cruel and mean spirits seem to have personal axes to grind lack the civility to keep such obnoxious feelings to themselves!

52. Dont want to jump to conclusions but it sounds like a suicide to me. Doesn't matter if its day or night it is impossible NOT to see a car coming right at you. As a driver it is hard to see a pedestrian at night so I don't fault John at all. I hit a dog once and it messed with me for weeks, hitting another pewrson is going to F with his head for quite some time, good luck John. Hope they dont try to sue because he has $$.

53. People just need to use their heads at night. DO NOT walk into traffic. DON'T assume people know you're crossing the street because you know you're crossing. At night if you're wearing dark clothes, be conscious of it. You can't just walk into the street wearing dark clothes and think people will see you. I've seen people using the crosswalk that don't pay attention to oncoming traffic unaware how close they came to almost getting hit.

54. I think Singleton was on KTLA Thursday morning talking about his newest movie. If you ever watched Singleton during any interview, has always been a class act. I feel sorry for all of those involved.

55. A man...who was black...wasn't drinking, wasn't using drugs, hit a woman at night who suddenly came out in front of his vehicle, jaywalking. He stopped and waited for the police. He did everything right, and the unfortunate part is that someone...because of her own ignorance in obeying traffic laws, especially at night...died.

Anyone who wants to turn the above into a racial discussion is an absolute out-and-out bigot. And I'd say that you should be ashamed of yourselves, but you won't be, because bigots take pride in being what they are.

56. This is an example of something that can happen to anyone. This man was following the law and a person decided to jay walk. I am deeply sad for her family, but he did indeed not do anything wrong. For that matter he stayed with the woman until police and an ambulance arrived.

I do hope if the family tries to sue that no jury thinks he is rich enough to give some money up, he is not in the wrong, this woman was. We have to understand that coming out between cars, especially at night, can be dangerous.

57. If it helps any, actress Tracey Gold permanently maimed her son while drinking and driving w/ her drunk husband in the passenger seat (SHE was the lesser of two evils that night!) and her helpless [intact] boys strapped in the backseat.. And she drove off a CLIFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

58. I was at an event at USC on Thursday evening where John Singleton dropped by to speak for a few minutes to give an inspirational talk to the students in the program. It was completely heartfelt and the students were awed that this man stopped by to talk to them. This was MINUTES before this accident happened. He was not under the influence of anything. This incident happened as he was leaving the event. This was a tragic accident that happened to a good man. BTW this was not on the freeway but in a neighborhood by the USC campus.

59. Singleton has never been involved in drugs, the rap scene, or even any Hollywood gossip scenes, so anyone on this thread thinking that he's a celebrity f*** up like Lohan is grossly mistaken.

60. I just want to say how nice it is to hear that there are good people in the world of celebrity- John stopped and didn't drive away- plus he was SOBER while drinking. Wow!
I am very sad to hear that someone passed away- but I applaud John for taking responsibility.
