John Singleton Involved in Fatal Pedestrian Accident

John SingletonJohn Singleton, acclaimed director of "Boyz in the Hood," was involved in a fatal accident Thursday night in Los Angeles.

LAPD officers tell TMZ Singleton was driving his 2001 Lexus SUV around 8:00 PM on a Los Angeles street, when a female pedestrian, not in a crosswalk, suddenly stepped in front of Singleton's car. Police say Singleton immediately stopped and waited for police and an ambulance to arrive. The 57-year-old woman, identified as Constance Russell of Los Angeles, was taken to a nearby hospital where she died Friday morning.

Police tell TMZ Singleton was not speeding at the time and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Cops say their investigation has concluded and they've determined that this was a "very, very unfortunate accident."

Singleton will not be cited for any violation.

A call placed to Singleton's agent was not immediately returned.

61. 57. If it helps any, actress Tracey Gold permanently maimed her son while drinking and driving w/ her drunk husband in the passenger seat (SHE was the lesser of two evils that night!) and her helpless [intact] boys strapped in the backseat.. And she drove off a CLIFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

62. #13, How dare you say this about John. He showed nothing but honorablity for his actions. A gansta.. would have run. John has never been in that type of lifestyle arena.

Prayers to both families. May the love of God keep memories of happiness for the deceased.

63. DUI arrest

Gold's 2004 booking photographGold was arrested for driving under the influence after a car accident on September 3, 2004. Her husband and two of her three children were injured, one with a broken clavicle and a head laceration, but her newborn infant was not hurt. She posted $50,000 bail the following day. Gold originally pleaded not guilty to the charges, but later changed her plea to guilty and was sentenced to one month in a work release program, 240 hours of community service, and three years' probation.

Here are the facts. Try the truth next time.

64. This is yet another reason why people should not be driving big cars like SUVs. These cars are killer machines. Statistically, people who get hit by them have very little chance of surviving, compared to getting hit by another smaller car model.
For example. I once witnessed my best friend get hit in full speed by a car that had started to drive on the sidewalk (probably a drunken driver), right in the middle of the day. She landed a few meters away due to the violence of the shock. But then she jumped up on her feet in no time, took a look at herself, and said something like "Man, I just got hit by a car! How crazy is that??". Not a single injury. Nothing. I believe this was due not only to increadible luck but also to the fact that the car was a small Fiat that didn't weight so much. Had it been a SUV hitting her at that speed, she would certainly have died. The driver did not have the decency to stop and wait for the police and ambulance like Mr Singleton did, by the way.
Anyway, my point is: accidents happen, there's not much you can do about it. But when a SUV is involved in them it only makes things worse. (Plus they're bad for the environment.)

67. I HOPE TMZ DOES NOT LET THIS STORY DIE UNTIL THE TRUTH ABOUT THIS INCIDENT IS BROUGHT TO LIGHT. CONSTANCE WAS NOT ALONE WHEN SHE WAS WALKING ACROSS THE STREET, HER FRIEND IRENE SAID THAT THEY WERE HALF WAY ACROSS THE STREET, OTHER CARS HAD STOPPED TO LET THEM CROSS, AND AS THEY WERE CROSSING THEY SAW THAT JOHN WAS NOT SLOWING DOWN, IRENE STARTED TO RUN AND THOUGHT CONSTANCE WAS WITH HER, SHE GOT TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET AND LOOKED BACK TO SEE THAT CONSTANCE WAS FROZEN IN HER TRACKS AND SAW HER GET HIT AND THROWN INTO THE AIR FROM THE IMPACT OF JOHN'S VEHICLE, SHE LANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. TO SAY THAT SHE JUST SUDDENLY STEPPED OUT IN FRONT OF JOHNS CAR IS ADDIDN INSULT TO INJURY. THE FACTS WILL TELL A DIFFERENT STORY.

68. I want to commend Mr. Singleton for doing the right thing. All we ever hear about on the news are the hit-and-runs.

Of course, we wouldn't have heard about this if Mr. Singleton were not a celebrity. How refreshing to read about a celebrity doing good. I am impressed, and have a little more hope for humanity.

To the family of the victim I would offer my deepest condolences for their loss in this tragic accident.

Have you been retained by the victim's family, or could you please tell us where you got such detailed information about the accident?

70. uh, milah...you're the ones slaughtering yourselves with black-on-black violence. Oh, and you're a bigot too.

71. I once dated a man who accidentally killed his own niece. He had the car jacked up and she crawled under it. The jack gave way, and she was crushed to death. He NEVER drove again...and this was 25 years ago. The impact on Mr. Singleton will also be crushing, though not fatal. May prayers go to him and his family, as well as to the family of the victim.

72. It's such a tragedy that we as a society have decided that it's ok to kill people with cars. If you "accidently" kill an innocent bystander (ie. someone "stupid enough" to walk in front of it) you'll be in jail. Cars are just as deadly and kill far more people every year. If the family sues it's just because there's very little justice in this area. Some deaths are needless.

73. I hope the DA research this accident thouroughly. Was John on a cell phone or was he texting? Some people do that. I will pray for the families of all involved!

74. My heart goes out to all families!!! John did nothing wrong. He just happened to be driving in the wrong place at the wrong time. Who knows why if the women stepped out in front of his vechile. Either she did it by accident or for another reason. John keep your head up and god bless you. I know this has never happened to me and cannot know what you are really feeling, but I am sure it is a sad feeling. And it will be okay.

Looking forward to your next movie

75. God Bless you John and to the families. I can only imagine what you are feeling now. It was an accident. You just happened to be on the road in the wrong place and the wrong time. In L.A. and New York, People don't care, they will walk out in front of intersection.

My prayers go out for you and both families. Keep your chin up. Looking forward to your next movie.
