NFL Suspends Vick

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell notified Michael Vick today that he is indefinitely suspended without pay from the National Football League, effective immediately.

Following are excerpts from Commissioner Goodell's letter Vick:

Your admitted conduct was not only illegal, but also cruel and reprehensible. Your team, the NFL, and NFL fans have all been hurt by your actions.

Your plea agreement and the plea agreements of your co-defendants also demonstrate your significant involvement in illegal gambling. Even if you personally did not place bets, as you contend, your actions in funding the betting and your association with illegal gambling both violate the terms of your NFL Player Contract and expose you to corrupting influences in derogation of one of the most fundamental responsibilities of an NFL player. You have engaged in conduct detrimental to the welfare of the NFL and have violated the league's Personal Conduct Policy.

I will review the status of your suspension following the conclusion of the legal proceedings. As part of that review, I will take into account a number of factors, including the resolution of any other charges that may be brought against you, whether in Surry County, Virginia, or other jurisdictions, your conduct going forward, the specifics of the sentence imposed by Judge Hudson and any related findings he might make, and the extent to which you are truthful and cooperative with law enforcement and league staff who are investigating these matters.

I have advised the Falcons that, with my decision today, they are no longer prohibited from acting and are now free to assert any claims or remedies available to them under the Collective Bargaining Agreement or your NFL Player Contract.

I do respect your comments. Yes, I am very upset regarding Vicks actions and I hope I am wrong but are you regarding to " who did what he did" because he is black? Believe me I would be just as upset and demanding the same punishment if a white person (any race) committed this crime. The lies, the dogs deaths etc....Some young men idolize star football players like Vick and some young men will see this and think it possible to commit crimes and get away with them or try to lie their way out of them! I do not look forward to that day when yet another young man makes that mistake but I believe a harsh punishment is in order for Vick! Vick should have told the truth the first time but, better than that, he should have realize what the consequences would be in breaking the law and acted the adult and professional he asked us to believe him to be! Bottom line, there is no place for this kind of crime or any crime for that matter in our society. Am I living in a fantasy world with no crime? Maybe, but I can hope that some day we will be civilized, productive members of society can't I?

122. I think that Michael Vick was ignorant in the decisions he made in this case, the co-defendants, obviously wanted no part of the "not guilty" deal so they did what they did, and at the last minute...Vick decided the same...

I don't want to talk about that, yes Vick is guilty, yes he is getting what he deserves...but what about everyone else out there?

We have people killing endangered species in other countries so some of you people can wear it on your body, we have people out there shooting ducks, deers and turkeys so you can have it on your dinner plate every evening...

Everyday someone is doing some cruelty to an animal in some shape, form or fashion
but when this case shows up, everyone wants to play lynch mob! I don't understand how you can berate someone who does cruelty to animals but someone around you could be committing the same act. It could be your boss, neighbor, friend or family member, would or will you turn them in or let them go scott free.

If you want to treat it in a racial sort of way, then you can but I see other people out there getting off with the same things but you don't hear it on the news. Roger Goodell can pick and choose his battles, Pacman, Tank, now Vick, they all gotta learn their lessons but what if some other athletes are doing the same thing

There would be no NBA, NHL, NFL, MLS, WNBA, CBB, CFB without these talented and gifted athletes, these athletes come from all kinds of backgrounds but you can't always single out the troubled athletes, you gotta watch for the clean-cut good ole boys cause they are the ones you really have to watch for...

Did you Chastise Pete Rose, Mark McGwire, Bill Romanowski, and a host of others when they did their dirt and you chastise Allen Iverson, Pacman Jones, Michael Vick

We got to have a positive and negative outlook on things these days...when you are home and do negative things around your kids what do you think they are going to do, and when they grow up you chastise them for doing what you did when they were younger!

Michael Vick is guilty, I am not taking sides but you can come better with the harsh comments that you guys have when other "stars" are doing the EXACT SAME THING!!!

If the shoe fits..... You have the right to read whatever you want into my comment.
But it is funny to me that you assume I'm referring to Vick's race. You know what they say about assuming, don't you?

It's so sad that people consider athletes or anyone else they see on television a role model. I feel this is part of the huge problem this sad excuse for a "united" country has.

126. OMG There is justice in the world..... He should never play NFL Football again after all a convicted felon has NO rights.

127. He didn't ACTUALLY bet on dog fights???? Give me a break!!!The affidavit filed with the indictment indicates that he "paid and collected" funds at the fights. I believe it mentioned at least one occasion he paid 23,000 from his breif case.
I'm going out on a limb here; Mike Vick gets arrested at least 2 more times AFTER he does his bit for this case.......It's in his blood. With all the free time away from football he's just an accident waiting to happen!!!!!!

128. amazing how many people are weighing in on this--good to see caring people concerned-as most of you are

question however

since gambling is involved (at least it appears so)
does that mean "unreported" income?

does that mean that the IRS might get involved?

could that mean more jail time for those involved-a federal offence??
wasn't it the IRS that was finally the downfall of Al Capone if I remember correctly...
anyone have any ideas or thoughts on that??
be interested to hear if I'm the only one who is thinking of this on top of everything else...

129. I smell Al Sharpton coming.........................if he does, I'll lose what respect what I have for that man.

Michael Vick did a dispicable crime. He's a sick person. Anyone who treats animals as he did deserves the worst punishment. I say we put him in with a pit bull and see who comes out on top........................FAIR???????????????????

131. RE: Post #141 by Sally:

OOOH! Good point, Sally! I hadn't even thought of the IRS/unreported income angel! Never occurred to me! Very good idea! Hit him where it'll hurt the most. Hey, Momma! You get the number to IRS?

RE: Post #143 by Wake_me_up_to_feel

1) Turn of the caps - it's rude and annoying. 2) I don't think Pit Bulls as a breed are inherently bad. I do think that they can be turned (by the use of draconian training methods and morally bankrupt breeding methods - remember the rape stand) into the vicious and dangerous animals you describe. Given time and by the methods any breed can be. I have know quite a few Pit Bulls breed by good people and raised and socialized in good home that were ideal, loving, happy, and protective family pets.

Pit Bulls aren't the only breed used in dog fighting, just the most prevalent. Rotts, Dobbies, Mastiffs, and others are also used. Once we band dog fighting and rigorously enforce that band with severe penalties, the need to breed that character into dogs, of any breed, will go away and in a couple of generation, reputable breeders will have breed out that tendency.

133. In response to Wake-me-up-to-feel Are you kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nobody wants anyone to be hurt by any animal but I also do not want anyone hurting animals who cannot defend themselves.

134. I.Loved the way they NFL covered their B's by saying they they are "indefinitely suspending" Michael Vick...Hellooooooo..what a joke..I'm wondering if he will get his team number back when he returns to the NFL in a couple years??

A very intellectual black man was interviewed on cable TV yesteray who was defending Vick's behavior because he was raised in neighborhoods whereby vicious dog fights were a way of life. It was his/their entertainment, a sport!! Jackson and Sharpton will be on the bandwagon defending Vick and claim he is being prejudiced against because he is black...Always trying to create discord among blacks and whites for their own personal financial gain! Right is right and wrong is wrong and I don't care what color you are..

People are saying Michael Vick is a nice guy? Maybe on the outside to friends and public but has a mean and evil soul at heart.. This man deserves long and hard time.

135. Vick probably still feels he did nothing wrong. NOW it is time to BAN deer hunting and big game hunting.
