Arsonist Lights Up Burning Man Early

Christmas came early for revelers at the eight-day Nevada desert festival known as Burning Man, when an arsonist lit up the 40-foot "Man" on Tuesday -- it wasn't supposed to go up in flames until Saturday. Current.TV reports festivalgoers (lucid and not-so-lucid) were heard chanting, "Save the man, save the man!"

Authorities say Paul Addis is responsible for the premature torching and have charged him with arson and misdemeanor possession of fireworks. 40,000 people are expected to reach the Black Rock Desert event this weekend, and organizers say the wooden effigy will be rebuilt in time for the scheduled 9:00 PM burning on Sept. 1. Burn, baby, burn!

Now back to our regularly scheduled Thirty Mile Zone programming!

11. "They are both college educated and employed in fine jobs, but they enjoy this week at Burning Man because of the "huge community feel" of the group.

Actually Lee, that "huge community feel" you are talking about that your sons enjoy is a drug induced mass orgy. But whatever makes you sleep at night.

Posted at 7:31PM on Aug 28th 2007 by simon birch ***********

some from column A some from column B
There are drugs there yes... whoopdifreakin' do- NEWS FLASH : Humans do drugs...

But does everyone there do drugs?- NO, heck accuse one of the ultrabodypurity hippies that they're on something and they will talk your ear off about holistic health and mother nature.

It is a community, I big really freakin' weird community. but we all love it. I wish I was there but I couldn't take off work. But there really is a community, Orgy? Nay - remember thats a huge alkaline clay flat. Would you have a fun time bumbin' uglies with both your nether parts exposed to a basic ph clay while having sex....

there is far far less sex going on at BM than people believe.

BUT
It is a HUGE event made out of a city like 40,000 people imaginations cracked open onto this plane of existence and decided to actually enjoy themselves fully and revel in the hijinx and fun of playing with your fellow humans surrounded by the most amazing art and natural beauty you'll see in this country

puritanical BS about SIN is acknowledged to be silly, and so the evil acts are still prohibited but the rationality and reason of the Burner community allows us to take pleasure and fully celebrate what it means to be a human and play out that grand story in epic scale with a hoard of 40,000 other passionate participants - no spectators

17. Stef... have you ever been? Your being a little prejuduce aren't you. Burners are some of the most talented and artistic people I have ever meant. If free thinking and open minded makes one a loser you must be all tied up. Get a life. Your probablly a big REPUBLICAN.

18. Yeah "talented and artistic"

In other words, selfish self-absorbed crappy artistes trying to get attention

instead of doing something positive for the world

19. All hail Paul Addis!

20. You people will never "get-it" because your stuck at home behind your computer. You are presuming something about a world acclaimed event that obviously have no clue about. And they are not trying to get attention, that would just assume people like you don't come. YOU are better off living your fantasies out thru main stream crap on TV. Think free and open your mind. Until then you are stuck in a sad little bubble.

21. You will never change some people's small minded thoughts about something they know nothing about.

Yes, there are drugs. No, not everyone partakes. I have seen the pictures that my daughter brings home, and there is usually a naked, or partially clothed person in a frame. If nudity bothers you, don't go. If free thinking bothers you, don't go. But don't condem something that you know next to nothing about. I raised my daughter to be tolerant of others and things that might be different than what she is used to. Different isn't bad, it's just different.

I don't go because the week is hard core camping. There is no shade unless you bring it with you. So I listen to my daughter's stories about her trips. It's interesting, but not something I would care to do. So why should I care if others do?

23. Kelly, mind your prejudice.

I'm a big Republican and I've been bestowing my sculptures upon the playa since '97.

26. This happened when I was in high school in the early 70's in Texas. Some idiot guy from our school while out drunk, lit up the homecoming bonfire 3 days before it was to happen. The town went crazy and wanted to kill this kid!!! He had to stay hidden by the police for his protection for a few weeks so that no one would get to him. I mean in Texas
this was almost blasphemy. Football is religion down there!!! I read this and got a good laugh remembering when it happened. I was pissed then though!!

27. Hey DUNCE CAP post #21, reread #19 and tell me if it says something about bm? Too irony for you?

28. burning man is great, an event like no other in history, and no one who has been talks like this ignoramuses. They fear what they dont understand.

Addis is an uncreative vandal, nothing more. Wow, real original - burn the man on tuesday, so the rest of the week sucks. Thanks, pal.

There's a reason he's burned the last two days. It's called climax. It's called energy. It's called ritual. It's called art. And it's an agreement you enter into when you buy a ticket. People with integrity honor their agreements. People with integrity dont badmouth things they know nothing about. If you havent been on the playa, shut up about it - you dont know what you're talking about.

Fact: Black Rock City has more phds, mds, artists and activists per capita than any city on earth.

jeez...

peace,

30. leatherblood here, long time reader first time poster. I have been to several burning mans and can attest to the fact that there is a lot of naked, alot of talent, not gonna deny seen drugs either...never really saw any sex but pretty sure what i had heard a couple times was sex. But one thing is certain that I did see and that was a whole lotta 'WOW' ladies and gentlemen, yes indeedie i said 'WOW'. So if you like 'WOW" go take a week at a dried up million year old lake bed nestled at the top of some mountain with close to fiftysomeodd thousand people twenty five thousand or so of them artists of more types of genres and medias than most little minds could ever comprehend--"Burn on"
