Arsonist Lights Up Burning Man Early

Christmas came early for revelers at the eight-day Nevada desert festival known as Burning Man, when an arsonist lit up the 40-foot "Man" on Tuesday -- it wasn't supposed to go up in flames until Saturday. Current.TV reports festivalgoers (lucid and not-so-lucid) were heard chanting, "Save the man, save the man!"

Authorities say Paul Addis is responsible for the premature torching and have charged him with arson and misdemeanor possession of fireworks. 40,000 people are expected to reach the Black Rock Desert event this weekend, and organizers say the wooden effigy will be rebuilt in time for the scheduled 9:00 PM burning on Sept. 1. Burn, baby, burn!

Now back to our regularly scheduled Thirty Mile Zone programming!

31. burn on...

respect for others is cool.

so what if you dont like someone else's 'art', maybe you dont even think it's worth being considered art, but someone inevitably thinks its a beautiful piece of art, and its not for you to judge otherwise. quit being so full of yourselves, anti-burners.

people like fire. almost every one of us, even republican or otherwise, has sat around a fire watching its hypnotic flames rip into the night sky. and the bigger the fire, the bigger the attraction. bonfires are cool and everybody knows it... these guys have the biggest bonfire in the country every year, and its even shaped like a bigass dude. pretty damned awesome.

oh, and everyone enjoys sex. quit hatin, just cause you aint there takin part right now... that's just childish.

also, i think everyone needs to be reminded that (depending on your location) it's hard to go ANYWHERE without being around a bunch of crackheads, smackheads, cranksters, wanksters, potheads, drunks, excetera excetera excetera... why dont you start bitching about walmart being a haven for druggies to wander after dark and play with things they have no intention of buying, rubbing their drug-germs all over toys that you'll bring home for your children the next day.

booyah.

32. Burning man use to be cool two decades ago, however now days it's gone so mainstream that I'm surprised it isn't called something like... "Burning Man brought to you by Kingford"

33. willie270, Good Lord.

You are comparing Burning Man, a 40,000 person strong, worldwide known freakfest, where more drugs are consumed than a Linsday Lohan Friday night, to some lame Texas drunken high school prank?

Step up and bend slightly over William, it's time for your fitting.

35. Kelly, it isn't about "freedom." It's about selfishness.

And you are incredibly uptight. And angry.

What have YOU done for someone else lately?

38. Now someone please explain this.... burning man attracts a plethera of liberal artsy types.... they all tend to be folks that claim to care about the environment.... so how exactly do they justify making a massive bondfire that will pollute the air? How many SUV's worth of pollution are smoked into the atmosphere by the burning man? Hmmm....

Too bad some of these techno geeks leave the rest of you in the dust- Please dont comment about what you probably (see I am giving a little doubt there) will never understand.
Thank you.

40. I am a family man and have been to Burning man 2 times with my motorhome and partner.
This event has the most caring, honest, human people that I have EVER seen in my 50 years. No BS, no false egos. NO crazy drunken fights or drugged out people walking around. WAKE UP...everything at Burning man exists in YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD right now. IF I wanted sex now in my town...I could find it. IF I wanted drugs in my little town...I could find it. YES...burning man is human. Everything that exists there is what exist anywhere...HOWEVER people do nor market themselves, don't mess with others, and for one week there is a sense that we are all human, and can CARE about eachother.

For those with kids there or worries that this is a group of LOSERS who want to hurt others...DON'T fall into that trap. Once my kids are old enough they will go with me to see how REAL HONEST HUMANS can be together with out all the LIES and BS that we carry around in our CIVIL safe world. Peace to all and especially to the BURNERS!

41. The event is Dionysian celebration. Much more than just drugs and sex. Its actually the liberation of our controlled culture.

42. None of you people know anything about the burn, its all about raw human emotional expression and release from the nonsense and bs in our friggin backwords country. Especially stef, these people r peaceful and tryin to learn who they r, u obviously know who u r a ignorant close mined fool who isn't open to tryin new things and experiences.
yes some people take drugs and have sex, but its all about the coming together and community relationship with creative people, in a time when all everybody else in America cares about is themselves and money.
Screw the people who are too full of themselves to at least find out more about burning man.
education is freedom
so tay art isn't positive addition to the world, but bombing and murdering people is? if anything way too many americans r just like u self-aborbed and egotistical, u have to be to write that.

43. BM is a freakier version of woodstock but with more visual arts and only so so music.

the people who attend either use it as an immature break from their normal lives or will be those people on the street when they are old because they have no money to retire on. either way it is just sad to watch. grow up people.

44. yikes fibbes "u r a" poor example of how worldly and smart the burners are. you seem like a kid still thinking your idealism alone will change the world, when your cohorts are studying and working their way up the ladder (in politics or whatever) and actually WILL change the world.

I am also so sorry that you either associate with "absorbed and egotistical" people so much that you rail about it on a gossip site or feel the need to go party in the desert with a bunch of other joy deprived individuals. I associate with wonderful hard working open hearted world changing americans on a daily basis and I find much to celebrate every day without needing to go to burning man to experience it.
