New Bohemians Keyboardist Shot Dead

A keyboard player for the band Edie Brickell & New Bohemians was shot to death early Monday in Dallas, while trying to kick in the door at his girlfriend's neighbor's house, police said.

Jeffrey Carter Albrecht was shot by a neighbor who may have believed he was a burglar trying to break into the home. The 34-year-old Albrecht died at the scene. It was not clear why Albrecht went to the house and the case is under investigation. No arrests have been made.

Danny Balis, Albrecht's roommate and fellow member of the Dallas rock band Sorta, told the AP the shooter lived next door to Albrecht's girlfriend. "He was at his girlfriend's house last night," Balis said. "He left the house and went next door and -- for whatever reason, which we don't know -- he knocked on the neighbor's door. And from what I understand, he was persistent. I don't know if there was a verbal exchange, but the person panicked and fired a shot through the door."

Albrecht had been with the New Bohemians since 1999. He had played with frontwoman Brickell's husband, Paul Simon. He also played with Charlie Sexton.

47. Thank you Lieutenant, I would have done the same thing. Someone comes banging on my door at 4 in the morning and keeps doing it after I've told them to stop apparently has a screw loose and who knows what they are capable of. It's a sad situation, but it happened and maybe someone will learn from it. Jeffrey did.

48. I would have shot him too. Lesson learned (albeit learned s l o w l y by looney liberals, don't F#@% with the neighbors when you are stupid AND loaded. You won't win!

50. "36. and yet the rest of the world solves most of their domestic disputes
without shooting someone"

You're right!

In Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq and Pakistan, among other countries, they still solve their domestic disputes BY STONING WOMEN TO DEATH.

I agree, that's so much more civilized!

51. It has nothing to do with where your from , how you are raised. It's about personal responsibility. Which no one seems to have or acknowledge any more. You don't get drunk and beat your girlfriend up. You don't chase her around the house and kick in doors that don't belong to you. Personal responsibility.

Any man that hits a woman should be shot anyway.

And to the folks that talk about shooting at the person's feet and calling 911, your are a fool. At 10 feet you have at most 1.5 seconds of reaction time. You make a choice and live with it. Any one that hesitates, becomes a victim.

In the middle of the night, you have no idea what the persons intentions are. A warning shot could mean you are dead. Warning shots are for idiots.

Instead of blaming the victim, as is so common these days... Blame the guy kicking the door down.

I live in Texas, but if I lived anywhere else I would still have a 9MM with personal assault rounds loaded. And kicking my door in in the middle of the night is a sure way to get sent to hell.

53. #53 Yo....I totally agree. Any responsible gun owner will tell you, you never pull out a gun unless you intend to use it.....and use it correctly by aiming to kill.

56. Wow, drunkin' stupidity sucks! I'm from NY and even I know that Texans take their "right to bear arms" very, very seriously. Ya know what though,(and I really do not mean any disrepect to Mr. Albrecht or his family or friends) but if all criminals thought that getting shot in the head was a possibilty every time they tried to do someting stupid I bet they would think twice.

57. One question for me is how did the home owner know that Albrecht wasn't in some kind of distress and in need of assistance? Has that been explained? I assume that there was some sort of verbal exchange that made the homeowner feel threatened, right?

58. That's why when I get drunk and beat up my girlfriend I stay home afterward. If you beat her up and then take it to the neighbors, you don't know what will happen.

59. We keep a double-barreled shotgun next to our front door in case anybody comes a-knockin'.

60. To whomenver the shooter is and his family:

My prayers are with you. I can't begin to imagine the grief you must feel in your hearts. I support your choice and I am beliving that you probably screamed at them that you had a gun or to go away. Either way, I support the gun law and will continue to.

Just in time for the 2008 elections...gun control debate. If you are thinking this is a good law and should stay and be nationwide....support the NRA today and VOTE for a Pro-Gun candidate.

I will pray for the family of the deceased also. This is not a good outcome for anyone. Tragic for all involved. The guy just broke a glass on his girlfriend...what might he of done to a stranger?

Put yourself in the shooter shoes...what weapon would you only wish you had...protected home.....safe rather than sorry....dead at an intruders hands.

Look at that family that got killed just month or so ago in their own home and burned, possibly alive.

How about Katrina...all the bad guys had them and that was a nightmare...think about if you ever really need one and only the bad guys have them...what FEAR will come over the land.

If you don't want a gun for protection and will rely on the police to save you...go ahead and don't have one....I have a right to bear arms. We do. Good luck in your endeavor.

Crimminals will never give them up.....law abiding Americans need a fighting chance and will not give up their arms without a fight.

The whole country will be debating this tomorrow.
