New Bohemians Keyboardist Shot Dead

A keyboard player for the band Edie Brickell & New Bohemians was shot to death early Monday in Dallas, while trying to kick in the door at his girlfriend's neighbor's house, police said.

Jeffrey Carter Albrecht was shot by a neighbor who may have believed he was a burglar trying to break into the home. The 34-year-old Albrecht died at the scene. It was not clear why Albrecht went to the house and the case is under investigation. No arrests have been made.

Danny Balis, Albrecht's roommate and fellow member of the Dallas rock band Sorta, told the AP the shooter lived next door to Albrecht's girlfriend. "He was at his girlfriend's house last night," Balis said. "He left the house and went next door and -- for whatever reason, which we don't know -- he knocked on the neighbor's door. And from what I understand, he was persistent. I don't know if there was a verbal exchange, but the person panicked and fired a shot through the door."

Albrecht had been with the New Bohemians since 1999. He had played with frontwoman Brickell's husband, Paul Simon. He also played with Charlie Sexton.

63. You gun freaks are a bunch of idiots. Reread the article. There's no proof that Albrecht actually kicked in the door. The police (via the neighbor) claim he "tried" to kick in the door. His friend says he persistently knocked. The neighbor fired a shot from the door.

This law will probably be overturned after ten or twenty or three thousand deaths are caused by drunken gun-owners who accidentally kill their own children in "self-defense."

"Dag, I jes' killed my own son, y'all. I thought he wuz a bur-gul-ar. I'm sorry, officer, I made a mistake. Please forgive me, Lord. Sorry, Johnny, at least you died for a good cause. And God bless George W. Bush. Amen."

64. A punk, of some renown, found out that he couldn't shove his weight and ego around on just anybody. He shoved and someone shoved back harder. What everyone seems to be avoiding is the fact that it NEVER woulod have happened if he hadn't started by getting drunk (first mistake), then started beating up on a woman (second mistake, and the act of a coward), and tried to (again) force his drunken, enraged, will upon another victim. He crossed the line (WAY over the line) and is solely responsible for his own demise. I'm just thankful that his behavior and attitude only killed him, and that he didn't get into a car and kill others instead. Sad outcome, but what do you expect? Come to my house in the middle of the night, banging and kicking on my door refusing to stop, and I won't just shoot you by accident, but on purpose.

And, for you arm-chair "legal-eagles" who think they have to be "inside" your house before you can shoot them, - you're Dead Wrong. You don't, automatically, have the right to shoot someone just because they're "in" your house unless you are afraid for your life (or your family's). This also extends to the outside under the same provisions. From what's already been reported, the neighbor was MORE than justified. Watch and see.

Bottom line, - if you want to beat up on women or try to shove your way in to other people's homes, either become a thug and go to prison (or get killed), or get psychiatric help. This guy set his own death in motion, all by himself.

67. I support gun rights whole heartedly.

I was raised in The San Francisco Bay Area, grew up in a Democratic Union household, my dad was is redneck as you would say, did not own a gun, and is still a Democrat because of the Union stuff . He is loyal to that and older in age. So your redneck generalzations are all wrong. Plus he is from Texas and Louisianna. No guns and doesn't want one.

I used to be pro-choice and all the other left stuff because of being forced fed it in my neighborhood.

Now that I am better informed and not just a product of my environment and really examine the issues from both views, I no longer just follow from my upbringing and neigborhood culture.

If you really examine the whole gun rights isuue objectively, you are fooling yourself if you want guns outlwed. You are blinded by the pride in your stance.

You will change your mind once the crime hits your family and have no protection.

I live in Phoenix, Arizona and our gun laws are similar to Texas. I hope the whole country adopts these gun laws.

68. I can't believe the stupidity of some posts here. Open the door to see who's banging on it in the middle of the night, after you asked and didn't give a reply? That kind of stupidity will get you killed.

any trained gun owner knows you shoot to stop, not to wound. That's why it's called deadly force. Failure to stop an attacker dead in his tracks will mean you will die. That's an easy choice for me. Shooting at his leg and all that is hollywood BS. How many police officers shoot to the center of mass ( torso) under stress? I'm willing to bet it's a lot more than those that went for a leg wound. That's because you're under stress and defending yourself. And anyone trained to use a gun will use it properly, by making sure the threat is stopped instantly. You never know how many attackers you're up against.

69. #71 Congrats for rejecting your dad's values and Christianity (why turn the other cheek when you can shoot somebody's ass?).
But no one's against "gun rights." We're against what just happened in Texas. A drunken man (talented musician, generally mild-mannered even according to his girlfriend) was shot dead BY ACCIDENT. The shooter goofed. And, if the shooter's story holds up, he'll get away with it, thanks to the new law - with hugs and pats on the back by people like you.
The NRA should make the killer its new poster boy. "I didn't mean to kill 'eem, but goddoggit, I'd do it agin. Even if it was mah own son. After all, a man's gotta git some rest."

70. So, if someone is breaking in your door, that allows you to KILL them? I know if I had a dying child in my hands, no way to contact a hospital to recieve emergency care, and were knocking at the door of the only house around, I would knock my brains out, to get them to open the door, or let them use the phone. I know that is NOT the situation here, but the guy IN the house, doesnt know the situation. If the guy DID break in (he was just knocking at the door persistantly), and came in the house armed, or threatening harm, then you could counter with SIMULAR force .BUT, just to fire a guy thru your front door, cos someone is knocking? Is that how incredibly violent our country is now? And the remarks here, where people were HAPPY this happened, reinforces that people LOVE violence. Very sad, and of course, for this country where over 80% claims to be Christian, (Or other religion that values human life), the way someone can destroy life so quickly, doesnt make sense. AND, FYI, no one shoots thru their door, to "SHOOT OVER THE HEAD". You would call the police to come there, and deal with the situation, or fire into your wall. Obviouslyl someone wanted "BRAGGING RIGHTS" of saying that they killed a FAMOUS SON OF A BUTCH, sort of thing. Again, I dont know, but I do know how people are. We need to start fixing the laws in this country, or the Wild Wild west, is going to end up looking like a day care center, and downtown Bagdad will be the way we treat people....shoot to kill, and love it, while making sure your PROVE how christian you are, by making sure you say RIGHT TO LIFE (no abortions) proves you care about life. So much hypocracy, so much hate, so much violence, so much death. Oh, and NO, Jesus didnt pack a piece, and fire at will. Those that live by the sword (gun, knife, atomic bomb, etc) will die by the sword, is what he had to say about that. PEOPLE THINK!

71. Actually the article said he was trying to kick the door in.

There was verbal communication. After that, the home owner still felt threatened.
If you had a child in your hands, you would knock and say "Help!: not try to kick the door in.

Personal Responsibility.

Every one loses here but the victim is not the dead guy.

72. I hope another hurricane Katrina hits Texas and leaves all the rednecks homeless and starving to death. Then they can kill them thar' grocery men to get some grub. Unless theyz giving freebies, in which case they can kill them thar' neighbor who wuz trying to steal that loaf of bread that was rightfully tharz. The nerve of some people!

73. "Country Is Doomed", - we'll by just fine because we've ALWAYS ignored people like you, doofus.

74. I live in south TX where home invasions are the norm. You can bet your butt I'll shoot anyone I feel is compromising my life and safety. I agree with YO. 911 takes a long time and time is precious in situations like those. I wish I can feel bad for a drunken woman beater but I can't. I agree with the poster who said it's about personal responsability. I do take my right to bare arms seriously and I won't apologize for it. I am responsible with it, though, and I would only use it if I felt I were in serious danger.
