New Bohemians Keyboardist Shot Dead

A keyboard player for the band Edie Brickell & New Bohemians was shot to death early Monday in Dallas, while trying to kick in the door at his girlfriend's neighbor's house, police said.

Jeffrey Carter Albrecht was shot by a neighbor who may have believed he was a burglar trying to break into the home. The 34-year-old Albrecht died at the scene. It was not clear why Albrecht went to the house and the case is under investigation. No arrests have been made.

Danny Balis, Albrecht's roommate and fellow member of the Dallas rock band Sorta, told the AP the shooter lived next door to Albrecht's girlfriend. "He was at his girlfriend's house last night," Balis said. "He left the house and went next door and -- for whatever reason, which we don't know -- he knocked on the neighbor's door. And from what I understand, he was persistent. I don't know if there was a verbal exchange, but the person panicked and fired a shot through the door."

Albrecht had been with the New Bohemians since 1999. He had played with frontwoman Brickell's husband, Paul Simon. He also played with Charlie Sexton.

77. My granddaddy lives in Tyler, Texas. He has Alzheimer's and lives with my Mommy and me. Last week he shot my Mommy through the head when she tried to come in through the front door. The door was stuck and Mommy had to shove on it. Granddad grabbed his gun. He didn't recognize Mommy because his mind is sick. He thought she was a robber. Mommy had to go to the hospital. Now she has brain damage and can't recognize me either.

78. P.S. A nice lady from the NRA came over yesterday. She gave my granddaddy a great big hug and thanked him for trying to save his family. She also gave him the name of a man to vote for in the next election. He has a lot of guns! And then she gave me a water pistol. She said I should practice shooting at the front door in case a robber comes in.

80. I am very good friends with his girlfriend (I would rather not mention her name). This is not like Carter tro do something like this and there is more to the story. I am so sad for her and his family right now.

81. You do not state that he was trying to kick the neighbor's door in, and it was 4 a.m. in the morning.

Sorry, Ryann . . . most of the freaks here would like to have Carter's body strung up and used for target practice.
A bunch of idiots.

83. Most states have similar laws as to when it is legal to use lethal force. There is no way the home owner is going to jail. A few years ago in Washington State a sailor shot his freind in the back off his property and it was justified. The freind came to his door argued with him and said he was going to get a gun and kill him. The friend went to the street to get his gun from his car. The sailor knew he had a gun in his car and shot him in the back. This was considered justified because the cops found the loaded gun in the guys car and all the witnesses confirmed it happened as discribed. All you have to do is justify being in a real threat. You can shoot anybody anytime if your life or someone elses life is in threat. They don't have to be on your property. This is the way it has been for years. There hasn't been any laws changed by "liberals". In Seattle there has been a rash of home invasion robberys. Gangs of thugs will find an elderly couple and just barge in beat them up and steal everything they can carry. Seattle is full of mamby pamby types that are anti gun. It is a shame.

84. To the neighbor.....good job.
For those who may think the neighbor faces charges....not in Texas; he was totally justified in his actions

Thanks, Heart. People do not know all the facts and one of them is that Carter was a very sweet and amazing man. This is very out of character for him. There were other factors involved as well and he was not trying to break into the guys house.

86. Yeah, I shoot people who knock on my door all the time. They're already beginning to pile up though...

88. Here is what his girlfriend says and people need to read:

the REAL Carter Albrecht: not exactly how the news portays
Body: carter would never have hurt me in anyway. He and I were both taking Chantix and were having crazy dreams. Saturday night we did not get much sleep and we went to Fort Worth and had the most amazing day going to The Modern Museum and lunch in Sundance Square.

That night, he had a few drinks... but Carter has quite a tolerance. I really think the lack of sleep, alcohol and Chantix sent him into a dream-like state.... it was like he was having a nightmare while he was awake... and I could not wake him up.

He and I had a great, peaceful, loving relationship... Sunday night was not Carter... I know the last time I saw him alive was during our fantastic Sunday outing....

i love him very much and always will....

89. I have known Carter for the better part of 12 years....he was the MOST amazing person. Loving, generous, brilliant, and so darn talented. He NEVER threw that in anyone's face, was happy to lend a helping hand, whether it was teaching my sister piano, or helping my mom set the dinner table. The last time I was in Dallas, I saw him, he looked SO happy....recording a solo album, bringing attention to the Dallas music scene, LOVING his friends and family, and as usual, w/that Carter grin, still shy!

Those of you posting these irresponsible comments DO NOT know the extent of what happened (and by the way, those of us who were apart of his life, know more than the papers, but not even we can claim to know all of the facts b/c we weren't there) and unfortunately, the media is NOT painting a fair picture.

THIS WAS NOT THE CARTER THAT ANY OF US KNEW...This is a tragedy. In my life, I have had many friends die, either by their own hand or in car accidents. NONE have hit me so hard as this one. We have lost a great musician, great source of inspiration, and a great friend. His family, girlfriend and those closest to him are in mourning and out of respect for this devastating loss, I implore you to have some compassion....Please remember them in your thoughts and prayers and help us to preserve his memory by not trashing it-when you didn't even know him!

90. "I have known Carter for the better part of 12 years....he was the MOST amazing person. Loving, generous, brilliant, and so darn talented."

You forgot to add "drunk" and "abusive" to your glowing list of his qualities.

"THIS WAS NOT THE CARTER THAT ANY OF US KNEW"

"help us to preserve his memory by not trashing it-when you didn't even know him!"

Ummm, hello? You just admitted that you didn't know him either so maybe you should just shut up now?

Can't have it both ways. Live by the tard, die by the tard.
