Legendary Tenor Pavarotti Dead at 71

Epic opera singer Luciano Pavarotti, whose voice and style made him one of the most famed opera singers to have ever lived, has died, his manager told The Associated Press. He was 71.

Pavarotti had been fighting a long battle with pancreatic cancer. His manager, Terri Robson, sent the AP an e-mail statement confirming that the singer died at his home in Modena, Italy, at 5:00 AM local time.

"The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life. In fitting with the approach that characterised his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness," the statement read.

31. The lights have been dimmed, the curtain has been lowered, Luciano Pavarotti has taken his final bow, and is now singing with the angels. What a remarkable voice the heavens have received today.

32. What sad news. :( His voice was truly a gift from the heavens...Such passion and life. It's rare when a celebrity is so respected and loved simply for their talent.

My Dad just passed away in April and he loved Pavarotti. It makes me happy to know that maybe now he can meet him. :)

41. Oh!! This is so sad; he was too young to die already, I had no idea he'd been struggling with pancreatic cancer. I heard he'd taken ill on NPR in my car radio this afternoon, but I didn't think he would die so soon! The world loses another great and exceptionally rare genius, oh I wish, I wish, I WISH I could have ever seen him perform live... Pavarotti!!! Too young to die, only 71. Well, only the good, right?

Rest peacefully, beautiful maestro, and thank you for giving us all your art, your extraordinary art; you have made the human race just a little bit better with your gift to us all of your genius, your beautiful voice, your passion... Oh, how wish I could've seen you perform before you left this life, Maestro Luciano Pavarotti. Ah, well, maybe I'll catch you later on down the line...
