Suspect Arrested in "Top Chef" Gay Bashing Case

matthew wall, josie smith-walave New details have emerged regarding the vicious attack on "Top Chef" contestant Josie Smith-Malave and her friends over Labor Day weekend. Nassau County police department reported that they've arrested Matthew W. Wall, 20, of Oregon, and charged him with second degree robbery and a bias crime. He was arraigned yesterday.

Police report that Wall, along with approximately twelve of his friends, were involved in a confrontation with Smith-Malave and three of her female friends. The altercation escalated when Wall and his posse allegedly began spitting and hitting the four women and making derogatory statements about their sexual orientation.

According to the police report, Wall "forcibly stole a video camera from one of the four, causing her to fall and injure her knee." The investigation is ongoing.

Smith-Malave appeared on the second season of "Top Chef" and was rejected in episode five.

31. Since I haven't seen the show, I don't know this woman. Why would anyone think that he knew she was gay? The article doesn't state that he knew her or that she was gay. It only states that he spit/hit and made comments to 4 women about their sexual orientation. It could have been a wild (or obvious) guess. Either way, I am more disgusted that he would hit a woman than call her a lesbian. He is a 20 year old disrespectful piece of crap. I don't believe the gay bashing is the problem here. I am sure this guy would love to see 2 chicks going at it in a porno.

33. Prosecute him for his actual physical crime, not his opinion or his thoughts. So what if he thinks Homosexuals are fools; everybody should be able to live with that. 43. I find it interesting that all of you horrified by the gay-bashing are wishing harm, sodomy and other various forms of evil on this man, but mostly that he gets raped by another man. So is the punishment for a straight man to be victimized by a gay man? That doesn't say much for you.

44. Hey guess what, the fact that he is against gays is not the issue here. It's a free country, you can feel how you want and have the right to say it. It was stupid to steal the camera and hurt the ladies, but it's his prerogative to be against gays, just like it's your prerogative to be for them if you so choose.
