Suspect Arrested in "Top Chef" Gay Bashing Case

matthew wall, josie smith-walave New details have emerged regarding the vicious attack on "Top Chef" contestant Josie Smith-Malave and her friends over Labor Day weekend. Nassau County police department reported that they've arrested Matthew W. Wall, 20, of Oregon, and charged him with second degree robbery and a bias crime. He was arraigned yesterday.

Police report that Wall, along with approximately twelve of his friends, were involved in a confrontation with Smith-Malave and three of her female friends. The altercation escalated when Wall and his posse allegedly began spitting and hitting the four women and making derogatory statements about their sexual orientation.

According to the police report, Wall "forcibly stole a video camera from one of the four, causing her to fall and injure her knee." The investigation is ongoing.

Smith-Malave appeared on the second season of "Top Chef" and was rejected in episode five.

83. First of all, TMZ, get your facts straight. Although this clown may have committed this hideous crime, I doubt he'll see much time behind bars. I don't know the laws in Oregon well at all, but depending on his record, he may just get a minimal sentence and back on the streets he'll be in no time flat.

Secondly, this dude is what I'd call, well...UGLY! Regardless of his sexual orientation, I doubt he sees much action.

He just used a word and he didn't touch anybody (unlike the punk in this story). Yeah, again, you can't say anything against blacks, but they can say everything against everybody else. It brings about the double standard that blacks employ on a regular basis, i.e, their own television station (BET); black colleges, Miss Black America, etc. A lot of them stood up for Michael Vick that dogfighting involves just dogs, and it's been around hundreds of years. 89. You know what they say... you hate most in other people what you fear in yourself. Mr. Wall needs to take a close, introspective look. I'm an elderly, straight, white grandmother... I'm as different from her as anyone can possibly be... but I can't understand disliking/hating a person for something that doesn't affect YOU. It makes no sense to me at all.
