Every day we hear about celebrities on the news, on the cover of magazines, and all over the internet. The media has a field day portraying celebrities like Lindsey Lohan and Britney Spears in the midst of disconcerting acts. It is very rare that we ever hear about celebrities doing beneficial deeds, but they do exist.
Police arrested former football star, OJ Simpson, for involvement in armed robbery at a Las Vegas hotel room on September 13th. Simpson is being accused of stealing his own sports memorabilia from Alfred Beardsley and Bruce Fromong, who claims he is a former friend of Simpson. His co-defendants include Walter Alexander, Clarence Stewart, Michael McClinton, Charles Howard Cashmore, and Charles Ehrilich. Simpson said that autographed sports collectibles, his Hall of Fame certificate, a photograph with former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, and video from his first wedding were all stolen. He is charged with numerous counts of kidnapping, robbery with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit a crime, and burglary with a firearm. As of present, Simpson and his co-defendants have not yet received sentencing.
Olympic Gold Medalist and professional tennis player, Andre Agassi, has definitely given back to the community. In 2001, Andre Agassi founded the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, a charter school currently located in his hometown, Las Vegas. His state-of-the-art school has a medical clinic, fitness center, and even a Code of Respect. Agassi also has his own charity called The Andre Agassi Charitable Foundation. President Clinton recently recognized Agassi’s school in his new book titled, Giving.
I’m sure everybody that reads magazines or watches the news has heard about OJ Simpson’s recent troubles, but what about Andre Agassi’s inspiring development? The media should front page topics that better our society, instead of topics that shed a negative light on it. We all talk about making the world a better place but the media focuses attention on celebrities when they are a nuisance and it should be when they contribute to a noble deed.I am sure that everyone can agree that negative topics take precedent to the far more important ones today, and that is a definite shame.
