R.I.P.
"Match Game's" Brett Somers Dead at 83

Brett Somers"Match Game" vet Brett Somers passed away from stomach and colon cancer at her Connecticut home on Saturday. She was 83.

Somers, the grandmother of the Mary-Kate Olsen/Nicole Richie oversized sunglasses trend, was known for her dry wit and humor as one of the celebrity panelists on the memorable '70s game show, which experienced renewed interest in repeats on the Game Show Network.

Ms. Somers married actor Jack Klugman in 1953 and played his ex-wife on the long-running series, "The Odd Couple." Although they separated in 1974, the couple never divorced.

Somers is survived by Klugman, her two sons, Adam and David, and a daughter, Leslie.

16. Man o man, does this hit me hard....

Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reilly were two of my very favorite people on television when I was growing up--I loved them terribly, they always made me laugh so much, even though a lot of what they were talking about went over my head (being that I was probably 5 when I first saw episodes of Match Game...

Seeing them in reruns or the occasional appearance here and there was like seeing an old friend. I had always wished that some day I might have an opportunity to meet them and thank them for all the fun times they gave me, but sadly now they are both gone...

There will never be another Brett Somers--she was truly an individual, a rebel, downright wickedly funny and crass, but I just know that she was also probably a very genuine, very human, and very loving person...

Sincere condolences to her family and friends--I'm totally heartbroken to hear the news.

17. Bless you Bret. You always made me laugh. I would look forward to watching the Match Game as a kid just to watch you, and now I watch GSN. This past Christmas my friend gave me the DVD boxed set of the Match Game. It is really great to see the hey day of tv. For those who don't know or remember Bret, you need to check out the reruns. She really was one hell of a (blank).

18. Match Game fans have so many delightful memories of her wit and personality. R.I.P. Brett, joining CNR and Gene Rayburn on the big panel in the sky. Somehow I don't think Brett would be offended at all if we remember her as a helluva broad.

25. She will be missed - they are all gone now -Gene Rayburn, Charles Nelson Reilly, Brett Somers - but there was a sort of risque innocence about that show - and nothing quite like it on television anymore....

.....when did TV get out of the entertainment business....

I guess I am too old now!!

27. May she rest in peace. I loved "Match Game" in the '70s, and the reruns today. Brett Somers was known for her sarcasm, but another reason I liked her was because she always seemed really happy for the contestants when they won.

28. Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reilly...can't say or think of one without the other. It's a shame that today's so-called "entertainment" falls soooo short of what we grew up with, both in TV and the movies. Our best comics are forever enshrined in either the Dean Martin Roasts, The Johnny Carson Collection or Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. Someone needs to teach the up and comer's what comedy is REALLY all about - and not just insults and 4 letter words (they can't spell past 4 these days!). Let's see if all our comics can do one day without a swear word. Then we'll have the start of the good 'ol days. A toast, a sly smirk and a contagious laugh to our loved and honored sweetheart!! Godspeed to you, my dear, and say hello to the panel when you get there!! XXXOOO

29. Rest in Peace, Brett! You and Charles & all filled my afternoons, as a teen, with gut-wrenching laughter. You and your contemporaries are truly missed....

30. Being a friend of one of Brett's sons, I knew Brett personally and I visited her house quite often during the 1980s and 1990s. I had so many fun, witty, warm hearted chats with her which had a feel not unlike 'The Match Game' when we really got going. When I kidded around with Brett I noticed how I was funnier and wittier than I'd ever been before in my life and I interpreted this as finally having my native talent for comedy emerge in all its glory, and took great pride in the fact that this happened in the presence of a well known comedianne! Alas, as the years went by I humbly realized that it was Brett's presence, talent, love and spirit which evoked these funny, witty parts of myself. Isn't it true that 'who you become' in the presence of another person is really one of the greatest 'gifts' that they give you? Thanks Brett.
