Dan Would Rather Sue CBS -- For $70M!

Former CBS anchorman Dan Rather has filed a $70 million lawsuit against the network, Viacom Inc., and three of his former bosses.

In the lawsuit, Rather claims CBS and its execs tarnished his reputation and made him a scapegoat for a discredited report on President Bush's National Guard service. He also says the network violated his contract by yanking him off the air after the story's fallout.

In a press release issued today, Rather says that if he wins a judgment, he will donate a majority of the money to "causes that will further journalistic independence."

A spokesman for CBS told TMZ, "These complaints are old news and this lawsuit is without merit."

Rather will be a guest on CNN's Larry King Live Thursday night discussing the lawsuit.

106. The Jena 6 case is a great example of grass roots journalism/activism, and it's not dependent on the likes of Rather bothering to cover the story. All the main media, especially the right wing press, Fox News, Drudge, purposefully ignored this story, and grass roots emails, radio stations, etc. were able to spread the story and thousands turned out for the rally all over the country.

107. Correction: I re-read the Editor and Publisher article (11/27/2000) that quotes Dan Rather about Lin Wood. He didn't buy Wood the batting cage, Wood bought that for himself after winning a libel case against NBC for Richard Jewell. Rather did inscribe this for Wood (and no one would call this any example of "courage").

108. There are media scandals on CBS, ABC< NBC, etc., every day where the anchors lie through their teeth to promote their own propaganda. It's a shame that NEWS is portrayed as fact, when it is simply a television entertainment show.

Dan Rather got what he deserved, regardless of his little lawsuit.

It is we, the public, who should be suing these "journalists" for the misinformation.

109. The biggest disaster at CBS is clearly Les Moonves. WHY hasn't Sumner Redstone fired him yet? He fired Rather, Imus and got rid of Howard Stern, all without adequate replacements, ratings wise. He's cost CBS a boatload of money.

BTW for the Imus fans cheering on Rather. Imus is another Lin Wood buddy. Lin Wood named one of his horses after Imus's wife (Source, Radar Magazine). If Wood isn't co-opting the likes of Rather, Couric, Imus, Walters, Dan Abrams, he sues and threatens the other reporters. Either way, the mainstream media were singing wealthy murder suspects tune big time. The whole "reporting" of the Ramsey case by the mainstream press deserves practically a congressional investigation.
