Shakira Foundation Shimmies Up $45 Million for Charity

shakiraHer hips don't lie and neither does her wallet! Shapely Colombian pop singer Shakira dug deep in her foundation's bank account and donated $45 million to charity on Friday.

The sexy singer announced the donation during Friday's Clinton Global Initiative meeting. Forty million will go to Nicaragua and Peru to address recent natural disasters there, and an additional $5 million will go to educational projects benefiting children across Latin America. Move over Angelina!

Shakira's a serial do-gooder: She's the co-founder of the Latin America for Solidarity Foundation, which helps impoverished communities across Latin America.

78. To #13 spike the poet - yet another one who believes everything is Bush's fault - or the oil companies fault - for the love of God, please educate YOURSELF before you criticize other's opinions. Exactly WHAT is it that the U.S. has done to foreign countries?? Other than defend them or defend us FROM them, I'm not quite sure where you're going with that statement.

80. Wow, when did it become a crime,or a defensible act, to donate an enormous fortune by a celebrity? When I read the news, I just cheered. There are always competing needs in this world. Judge Shakira for what her passions are? Foolish. If all of the wealthy people in this world did what she has done with her foundation, there might be a whole lot less of suffering in this world. Rock on Shakira and the people who work with and contribute to your foundation. We need more of your thinking...and committment.

81. #32 Karina - of course, it's ALWAYS Bush's fault. Could you be any more of a simpleton? I'm sure you also believe that the fact that Hurricane Katrina even developed was his fault, global warming is his fault, your pitiful life is his fault...yada, yada, yada. Yes, we have a right to free speech in this country - I just wish people like you would use your mind before exercising that right. Think before you speak - educate yourself on the facts, and not what the media is telling you, or what Hollywood is telling you.

The sweat shops in other countries - now tell he how's he's responsible for that? He isn't God. Our national deficit has been in the condition it's in for more than 20 years - yep, just make sure you vote for a democrat this time around - that'll make everything better eh?

82. I forgot to add this to my post:

STOP CRITICIZING SHAKIRA - THIS IS NOT A WAR OF NEEDS (U.S. vs. the World) Any, and I repeat, any attempt to do what she, and the people that work with the foundation...and the others that have likely donated to it, need encouragement. What a cynical world we have in this country that we start questioning motives.

Get a clue. We are so darn fortunate in the U.S. that we have no sense of the suffering outside this country. Of course we have problems in this country...and all of those online thinking Americans deserve service first should open their wallets tonight and give online. Try the United Way (www.national.unitedway.org) , AmeriCares (www.americares.org) American Red Cross (www.redcross.org) or Salvation Army (www.salvationarmyusa.org) or just complain about the good will of someone else because you might be too narrow-minded to realize that the world is part of our responsibility...and too cheap to put your money where your keystrokes are. Thanks, from someone who gives throughout the year to a variety of charities even though I am not a millonaire!

83. Shakira, Madonna, Oprah, Angelina..... These are celebrities that not only earned there fortunes, but they have shared the benefits of there luck with those less fortunate. I don't care if they are doing it for publicity or for tax benefits. They deserve applause and kudos for there charity work, not condemnation. Its the governments of most countries that are full of corruption, otherwise so many people around the entire world wouldn't be in dire need of help.

84. Uh....okay, everyone has a right to their own opinions but let's all take a step back for a minute and as adults, realize that generosity comes in several forms and in several denominations of currency. Let's be good enough to recognize her gift in the positive gesture for which it's meant.

Shakira has made a huge contribution and obviously in an amount that's astronomical to most -if not all- of us but it remains a donation for the greater good no matter what our opinions hold.

Celebrities make a lot more money than we do but all of us do what we can, when we can. It's in our gestures to lend aid that unifies us and it shouldn't be what amounts we offer that separate us. EVERY bit helps, no matter what.

I have a lot of criticism over such an amount given in one lump sum to be swiftly donated without appointment of a private trustee to insure the money is distributed fairly but as in all charity, it all boils down to the discretion of the benefactor.

Shakira has done what all of us do and that is give what we can, when we can. Let's be hopeful it makes a difference to the needy and concentrate our thoughts on them instead of this petty bull**** most of you are honing in on.

Or is that too much a task to expect?

85. All those you think she should be giving her 45Mil to a US charity . . . you must not travel, you probably have not seen anything outside your own front door. You have no idea what REAL poverty is. The US has issues but when compared to the poverty in South/Central America, Africa and other parts of the world, you yanks are on a cake walk.

Plus, she should help her own people. Just like your American stars should help their own if you all need it so badly.

Posted at 7:15AM on Sep 30th 2007 by mmmm probably not

86. GOD BLESS HER, very generous.

87. I think that is good that someone can do that and does. But why is it that all her money made here in America goes to the Latin communities. Isn't that somewhat racist? Not even the so called American Movie Stars and Singers donate to the poor in America, and if they think we don't have any they are obviously looking too much in the other countries. I get solicited at least once a day for familes needing food, school supplies etc. What about our elder who helped build this USA losing homes because of taxes. I will not buy another record, or see another movie in the theater. I'm sick of giving these idiots my money to support other countries. These stars forget who made them and then forget that not americans make the money they do!

88. Just another case of a celeb that made most of her money in the USA, but not giving back to the people of this country. They all make me sick. One thing you can say about Nascar drivers they give back the the children and people in this country, There are children in the USA that could even use money to buy school supplies. Someone needs to wake these celebs up. ????

89. She is just funding more border-crossers who will be standing out in front
of your neighborhood Home Depot soon.

90. Way to be informed becky.

She made most of her money in SOUTH America - not the USA. Try reading the facts before jumping to erroneous conclusions.
