Alcoholism is indeed a DISEASE. It might not be worthy of your pity, but you cannot deny the effects of addiction. In the early stage/in the beginning using and drinking is a choice... but then after the disease takes over you lose the ability to stop. Many people work very hard to combat this issue. It is a daily struggle. You are an insensitive A$$!
Celebs don't really have the second A (anonymous). That A is there for a reason. Please know that many people do successfully work the AA program. And then some do no. But usually the whole world doesn't know about it.

36. Honestly, I don't care if Mel Gibson crapped his pants and picked his nose while whistling "Dixie." I've had the hots for this man since 1986 and, even though the hairline has receded a little and there are a few more creases and wrinkles since the first time I ever saw him in a movie (as the slow-witted title character, "Tim"), he's still finer than any mortal man I've ever seen. He may have made some anti-semitic remarks but, guess what? It's still the United States and he can still say whatever he choses, even if it is during a DUI bust. Go rag on somebody else, TMZ. Sweaty and drunk Mel Gibson? I'll take him!

That's the problem...excuses excuses.. That's all that AA kuhumbaya crap that kills me. Powerlessness...oh please. We have a choice to destroy ourselves or not. It's about taking responsibility for our actions.
I'm in recovery. 1.5 years sober. I make a choice every day not to drink.
Relapse schmealapse. People like Mel Gibson do this to themselves, and make their own beds. They CHOOSE to drink. Irresponsible.
When he kills someone or himself on his next DUI...who is to blame? His "disease" or his damn selfishness?

45. Jbird: ARE YOU NUTS???? Alcoholism is NOT a disease, its a CHOICE!!!!!!!! Cancer is a disease, diabetes is a disease, but being an alcholoic is a choice. Those who say it is a disease are just enabling those with problems. I was married to an alcoholic and my family has several so don't give me the disease crap its a CHOICE not a DISEASE.
