Litigant to Judge Mathis -- I Ain't No Hillbilly, Dang It!

Judge MathisA litigant who appeared on the "Judge Mathis" television court show has sued Greg Mathis, Warner Bros and Telepictures (which co-owns TMZ), claiming she was done in by the show and essentially called a hick.

Melody Burnham says the show contacted her over a lawsuit she had filed against a tenant. Burnham, a resident of San Diego, alleges producers never explained that Mathis was not a sitting judge in a real court. By the way, the show flew Burnham and a friend to Chicago for the taping, put her up in a hotel and paid for her meals. -- not generally something the Cook County Circuit Courts do. And it's unclear why she thought a "real" court in Chicago would hear a San Diego landlord/tenant case.

And it gets better!

Burnham goes on to allege that when she actually appeared before Mathis and the cameras (and the crew and the studio audience), she was still in the dark that it was not a real court. She says she didn't figure that out for more than a year. Ding dang!

So Burnham's suit against Mathis, filed in San Diego County Superior Court, claims she was held hostage in a dressing room for six hours without food. She also claims, among many other things, she didn't know she was going to be countersued until minutes before the trial.

But the unkindest cut of all -- Mathis "....ridiculed her for the pictures showing her washing machine outside, calling her a 'hillbilly.'"

According to the suit, Mathis dismissed the case, awarded damages to neither party, and stated, "I'm sending you hillbillies back to the hills.

The suit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

UPDATE: As TMZ first reported, San Diego resident Melody Burnham sued TV's Judge Greg Mathis and his show's production companies, claiming she didn't know Mathis was not a real judge in a real court. She also says Mathis called her a "hillbilly" on the show.

A spokesperson for Telepictures Productions, the company that produces "Judge Mathis," tells TMZ: "We absolutely believe this case has absolutely no merit. Greg Mathis is a respected lawyer and former judge. The show, currently in its ninth season, follows strict procedures for case selection, releases and binding awards. All participants sign releases before appearing on the program and any allegations that this was not a real case are unfounded and fabricated. Judge Mathis' track record for advocacy and fairness to all speaks for itself."

TMZ is a joint venture between Telepictures and AOL

17. If she didn't get it before, then she should have clued in when she had to sign the release form. Nobody goes on television without having to sign forms. It's her own fault if she didn't read them. These people are also paid to be on these court shows. If they are ordered to pay something, then the money comes out of what they get for being on the show. So not only did she get a free trip, but she got paid to take it.

21. So, why is being called a "hillbilly" considered derogatory. This woman is an embarrassmen to hillbillies everywhere. Judge Mathis is cool and I bet some people don't like it that a black person is smarter than they are.

22. I love Judge Mathis. This woman shouldn't think she is special or anything. He states the truth about everyone, regardless of race, gender, or sexuality. If she was so dumb not to realize it was a show, I'd say she got off light just being called a hillbilly.

24. I went on the Peoples court years ago and it was a circus. They do not want to hear your case, they just want ratings! I feel for her. But you do have to read the very small but fine print about being on these shows. You cannot appeal. Once they say their ruling you are done! They do not tell you that they are countersuing you until 5 seconds before you go to walk out not giving you time to get the evidence you need to go against them. Judge Milian (or however you spell it) tries to be funny, but in reality she is very harsh and hears what she wants. They would not even let me have my witnesses talk! SO beware! Yes you get your 15 minutes of fame......but it is not worth it! Get is some other way. Plus if oyu stay in the court you went to in the first place, you have more options after the verdict!

25. i like Judge Mathis, now Judge Judy is a loud mouth that never gives anyone a chance to say anything ,and she likes to belittle people. Don't critize him becuase he's good, if you check your records he was a judge, same goes for Judge Judy, Judge Alex, Judge Christina, Judge Joe Brown, Divorce Court,

Check your local judges in your community and see if they will put up with any of your BS. she's just a Hillbilly out of her element and now she wants to have a lawsuit against the Judge. Did she make a mistake and think she was going on Jerry Springer, with her cousins

What did she expect??? Dumbazz Hillbilly

26. I have watched this show and most of the time, I agree with what he says. You can't tell me that this woman had no idea that she was on a tv show! I do believe that they would have to sign a waiver or something, agreeing to be on the show. Judge Mathis is no different with the comments than any other judge that appears on tv. Have you ever heard judge Judy and how she can put people down, like referring to them as stupid and such? This woman needs to get a reality check and just go away. No court in America is going to place you in a dressing room, put make up on you and have a camera crew. She won't win her case!!!

30. #9 How does he make you ashamed? He went to college, then law school, became a judge. He is one of a few to NEVER had a case overturned . He is now in the entertainment sector. This makes you ashamed!!!!!!!!!!! You should be ashamed, but not because of him. LOL
