Litigant to Judge Mathis -- I Ain't No Hillbilly, Dang It!

Judge MathisA litigant who appeared on the "Judge Mathis" television court show has sued Greg Mathis, Warner Bros and Telepictures (which co-owns TMZ), claiming she was done in by the show and essentially called a hick.

Melody Burnham says the show contacted her over a lawsuit she had filed against a tenant. Burnham, a resident of San Diego, alleges producers never explained that Mathis was not a sitting judge in a real court. By the way, the show flew Burnham and a friend to Chicago for the taping, put her up in a hotel and paid for her meals. -- not generally something the Cook County Circuit Courts do. And it's unclear why she thought a "real" court in Chicago would hear a San Diego landlord/tenant case.

And it gets better!

Burnham goes on to allege that when she actually appeared before Mathis and the cameras (and the crew and the studio audience), she was still in the dark that it was not a real court. She says she didn't figure that out for more than a year. Ding dang!

So Burnham's suit against Mathis, filed in San Diego County Superior Court, claims she was held hostage in a dressing room for six hours without food. She also claims, among many other things, she didn't know she was going to be countersued until minutes before the trial.

But the unkindest cut of all -- Mathis "....ridiculed her for the pictures showing her washing machine outside, calling her a 'hillbilly.'"

According to the suit, Mathis dismissed the case, awarded damages to neither party, and stated, "I'm sending you hillbillies back to the hills.

The suit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

UPDATE: As TMZ first reported, San Diego resident Melody Burnham sued TV's Judge Greg Mathis and his show's production companies, claiming she didn't know Mathis was not a real judge in a real court. She also says Mathis called her a "hillbilly" on the show.

A spokesperson for Telepictures Productions, the company that produces "Judge Mathis," tells TMZ: "We absolutely believe this case has absolutely no merit. Greg Mathis is a respected lawyer and former judge. The show, currently in its ninth season, follows strict procedures for case selection, releases and binding awards. All participants sign releases before appearing on the program and any allegations that this was not a real case are unfounded and fabricated. Judge Mathis' track record for advocacy and fairness to all speaks for itself."

TMZ is a joint venture between Telepictures and AOL

31.
These 'court' shows are binding arbitrations, not judicial hearings; any moron can figure that out from reading the releases before they sign.

32. I think you guys read the article wrong. She was on her way to Jerry Springer Show and made a turn to the wrong dressing room. She didn't know why there was some black guy in a robe there instead of Cousin Earle who she was supposed to marry. Sheesh, at least Dr. Phil would have bought her a new washer. Yeee haw!

33. Anyone who watches Judge Mathis for any period of time knows he is a racist. Calling someone on the show a "hillbilly" is a derogatory term aimed at white people. Had Judge Alex called called someone a black person on the show "ghetto trash", it would have been splashed all over the news.

34. I agree- I was on this show - AND IT IS FAKE. I didn't know I was being countersuited until 5 minutes to show- and no preparation whatsoever EVERYTHING WAS SCRIPTED AND THE JUDGE HAD ALL THE EVIDENCE PRIOR IT WAS SO FAKE I

35. I love watching Judge Mathis. Usually the people that are on there are a little bit trashy - I mean who else would want to air their problems on national television.

37. My son went on the Judge Judy show, he sued an old girl friend, I told my son you need to be prepared for Judge Judy she is a few years older than I am , but realize this we think and talk alike. So be prepared to get reamed ( for being STUPID) he won and the x looked like a hill billy her mom did a no show no call at work because they told her she could not go to LA, they flew down expecting they would have one big party..( NOT) My husband flew down as a witness they flew in and stayed one night and flew right out after court, the HIll Billy and her Mom accepted the free second night . They had no money to do anything so they sat in the Hotel room watching TV. Some women just play stupid and act like they are entitled. My son got reamed by Judge Judy but he told her you sound just like my mom. The X made a fool out of her self she was such a fool I actually felt sorry for her. What I am getting at is if you go on court TV shows be aware that you just may look stupid in the end.

38. I love Manthis! He calls it like he sees it. He has no hang-ups calling someone a crackhead, junkie, stupid. People are way to damn sensitive, if your gonna put an image of yourself out there you better be willing to hear what people think of you. You can't act like a hillbilly on purpose unless you are a hillbilly. I wonder if she has cars on cinder blocks in her front yard?

41. I stopped watching Judge Mathis after he very openly mocked a man with a very bad stutter. Mockery of a physical affliction is out of bounds as far as I'm concerned and he was extremely cruel in his mockery. My nephew stutters and I've seen how uncomfortable he is in public-I can't imagine the feeling of shame and embarrassment the defendent went through when he was ridiculed on national television.

42. First, he is a real judge. He went to law school and was a judge long before TV. So i guess that makes judy, Millian and others not real either then huh?!! At #s 2, 4, 6, 8. 25.I wonder do you ever watch the show? He does not care what color you are, he calls it like it is.. you, know... a sade a spade!?! If you are acting ghetto, he will tell you. So whats the difference? How much of an idiot does one person have to be to not know that the courts dont call you and they certainly DO NOT fly you to Chicago, put you up in a hotel, and pay for your food; Hell what about all the lights and cameras.... LOL!!! She knew exactly what was going on. And also # 25. If you dont want to be called out, then you shouldnt go on national television acting shall we say hillbillish... Fact is ,he is an EQUAL OPPOURTUNITY OFFENDER! Color plays no factor in this so all you people wanting it to be are wrong. Watch the show and you will see... LMFAO!!! she really is the dumbest person on earth or a hillbilly! Either way she should sue herself for being so stupid!

43. Too funny! In reference to the washing machine outside... Hey, I live in San Diego and it's not cheap by ANY means! I'm no hillbilly but my condo is so small that HELL YEAH if I EVEN HAD A YARD I wouldn't hesitate to put a washing machine it it!!

44. i HAD HEARD THAT IF YOU GO ON A COURT TV SHOW (ANY OF THEM), AND LET'S SAY YOU SUE FOR $3,500.00 AND YOU WIN. tHE MONEY DOES NOT LITERALLY GET PAID BY THE DEFENDANT BUT IS PAID TO YOU FROM THE SHOW. dOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS IS TRUE? IF IT WASN'T WHO WOULD EVER AGREE TO GO ON?

45. I like Judge Mathis. He blasts everybody. He has called someone from his own race not paying bills & driving a Cadillac "Ghetto Fabulous." And I think anyone who has their washing machine outside is probably a hillbilly. Maybe now she's suing the show cause she's finally going to build a roof over her washer!!! Get over it lady, I'm sure you've been called worse....
