Litigant to Judge Mathis -- I Ain't No Hillbilly, Dang It!

Judge MathisA litigant who appeared on the "Judge Mathis" television court show has sued Greg Mathis, Warner Bros and Telepictures (which co-owns TMZ), claiming she was done in by the show and essentially called a hick.

Melody Burnham says the show contacted her over a lawsuit she had filed against a tenant. Burnham, a resident of San Diego, alleges producers never explained that Mathis was not a sitting judge in a real court. By the way, the show flew Burnham and a friend to Chicago for the taping, put her up in a hotel and paid for her meals. -- not generally something the Cook County Circuit Courts do. And it's unclear why she thought a "real" court in Chicago would hear a San Diego landlord/tenant case.

And it gets better!

Burnham goes on to allege that when she actually appeared before Mathis and the cameras (and the crew and the studio audience), she was still in the dark that it was not a real court. She says she didn't figure that out for more than a year. Ding dang!

So Burnham's suit against Mathis, filed in San Diego County Superior Court, claims she was held hostage in a dressing room for six hours without food. She also claims, among many other things, she didn't know she was going to be countersued until minutes before the trial.

But the unkindest cut of all -- Mathis "....ridiculed her for the pictures showing her washing machine outside, calling her a 'hillbilly.'"

According to the suit, Mathis dismissed the case, awarded damages to neither party, and stated, "I'm sending you hillbillies back to the hills.

The suit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.

UPDATE: As TMZ first reported, San Diego resident Melody Burnham sued TV's Judge Greg Mathis and his show's production companies, claiming she didn't know Mathis was not a real judge in a real court. She also says Mathis called her a "hillbilly" on the show.

A spokesperson for Telepictures Productions, the company that produces "Judge Mathis," tells TMZ: "We absolutely believe this case has absolutely no merit. Greg Mathis is a respected lawyer and former judge. The show, currently in its ninth season, follows strict procedures for case selection, releases and binding awards. All participants sign releases before appearing on the program and any allegations that this was not a real case are unfounded and fabricated. Judge Mathis' track record for advocacy and fairness to all speaks for itself."

TMZ is a joint venture between Telepictures and AOL

61. #29 Thank you so much for the laugh, I loved your posting, it was so true!!! Your posting was as brilliant as #49's was ignorant.......the unforturnate ignorance and hatred of racism.

Greg Mathis is an intelligent and positvie contributor to our community. He thoughts and accomplishments have been published in actual books.......hey, but look at your acomplishments #49, you've been "printed" in TMZ's comment section!! Oh #49, I truly pity stupidity.............but not this morning!

I think Judge Mathis is great entertainment for a reality television show. However, when I want to watch a "real" trial, I can always switch to Court TV.

62. He's probably the most racist person on TV that has a show. I watched him a couple of times and had enough of his very obvious favoritism. Had a white person said and acted the way he has they would have been off the air long time ago. You need to be sued......clean up your act Judge!

64. Hey, where is the California Civil Code that says you can't install your washer and/or dryer outdoors? The weather can reach 105 + degrees. If it is cool to have a designer outdoor kitchen/bbq in your backyard, or even dine outside on the public sidewalk - why insult the woman over her outdoor washer. Others do the similar thing.

68. According to Greg Mathis' Wikipedia page, he "is a retired Michigan 36th District Court judge".

I don't see what the big deal is about. Her dumb as was flown to Chicago, put up in a hotel, had her meals paid for, and saw cameras in the courtroom but failed to realize that she was going to be on TV, then she deserved to be called a hillbilly.

70. yes he is a judge and it's Cook county circuit court, not superior court. I'm assuming the TMZ writer was raised in New York. Oh and as for the race angle, that's part of the TMZ formula - mundane story featuring black person, scroll to blog and read the whites who turned it into yet another opportunity to hurl racial slurs, you know, just for fun. Oh and when TMZ posts a story about an anti-semite, the formula works in reverse i.e. scroll to blog and read about the outrage and hurt experienced by the readers...

71. So "Duh" you are a lawyer, no wonder everybody hates lawyers. I'm getting from your comment that you believe everyone in the South is stupid. Have a great day everyone!!!!!

72. TMZ is misinforming the publiblic by claiming that he is not a real, legitimate judge, which he is. I live in Chicago and know a handful of people who have appeared on his show, including my brother, who sued his ex-roommate. While trials on tv would make a viewer question the authenticity of the judge and the ruling, he is, in fact, a real judge and his rulings are honored and final. Participants are paid an appearance fee, which compensates them for exchanging their privacy. He is a VERY nice man, and unfortunately, sometimes the truth is hard to accept. It seems like such a long time (1 year) to wait to file a suit about this...was the woman having a hard time making up her mind as to if she was really offended or not? Seems a little fishy to me, but I'm mostly disappointed in TMZ's inability to provide correct information to it's readers. May not be the first time...

74. Please, please let this be thrown out by the courts, she must be a hillybilly hick, if she didn't know she was going to be on tv, etc Some people just have not brain power.
