Vick 'Em Shirts: Too Soon?

In an effort to poke a little fun at the Michael Vick scandal and irk rival Texas A&M, students at Texas Tech created a t-shirt depicting a football player hanging a dog with the slogan "Vick 'Em" across the front.
Michael Vick shirts
A&M and Tech play this weekend. The "Vick 'Em" slogan is in reference to the A&M slogan "Gig 'em" and the dog being hung in the photo is A&M's mascot. The player doing the hanging is wearing a number seven jersey -- that's Vick's number.

Amazingly enough, the shirts were created by the Theta Chi fraternity at Texas Tech in an effort to raise money for the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund. According to the Daily Toreador, Texas Tech's student paper, the t-shirts are no longer being produced, and the frat was kicked off campus as a result.

"We realize the shirts shouldn't have been printed," Geoffrey Candia, the creator of the shirts, told the AP. Hindsight is 20-20!

16. The shirt was created by a TECH student...NOT an Aggie. The creator claimed he was going to give some of the profit to the Student Animal Defense Fund. Aggies wouldn't do this...only pathetic Raiders!

18. I think you guys meant to write that the fraternity who made the shirts were from Texas Tech NOT Texas A&M. From Tech's article on the subject...

"I came up with the idea and I drew it," said Scott Klingle, a member of Theta Chi. "I'm an artist, that's what I live for. I want my work to be noticed. There's no reason for me to get in trouble," he said. "It's freedom of speech. It's all in good fun," Klingle said.

Come on.....I have heard many Aggie jokes but seriously, Aggies have more class than that.!

19. They are Texas Tech's shirts, created by a Texas Tech fraternity. So, even though my opinion of A&M is low also, they shouldn't be blamed for this shirt. Get your facts straight, TMZ.

21. The t-shirts were being made by the Theta Chi fraternity at Texas Tech not Texas A&M. Candia is a Tech student.

22. They could have done a Lot better. Not so funny, or cute.

23. California girl
What are you saying---Texas A & M didn't create that t-shirt -- Texas Tech did. In the future, be clear with your comments because it makes it look like you don't know what you're talking about. Texas A & M University holds their own in education, sports, and are major contributors in various fields such as medicine, engineering, and many others. Please get your facts straight before you get out there and make a fool out of yourself.

Gig 'Em Aggies

24. Newsflash to California Girl- This shirt should not futher lower your opinion of Texas Aggies. It has nothing to do with THEIR character. It is an insult to Texas A&M. If you choose to lower your opinion of anyone, it should be directed to the Tech student that created it, not Texas A&M. As a an Aggie Mom, the shirt merely offends me. As a dog owner and lover, it repulses me.

25. I can take a rivalry, that is fine. We all dish it out, but this is just so tacky. it figures, just what we Ags expect from Raiders! Hey Ags... BTHO TT

Gig EM!

26. TMZ actually got the facts wrong. Why would A&M make a shirt like that!!????

Here's the link: http://media.www.dailytoreador.com/media/storage/paper870/news/2007/10/10/News/Theta.Chi.Suspended.For.vick.em.Shirts-3022692.shtml

As a graduate of Texas Tech I can say we definately have the most obnoxious fans on the planet, and thats what makes going to the games so fun. If you can't take a few wise cracks and some heckling then maybe sporting events aren't your place.
Anyway, the fraternity that made the shirts was in fact from Texas Tech and not A&M, friggin duh!

In response to California Girls comments; it's a joke man! Do you mean to tell me that you have never made a joke of any sort that picks on a current issue? It's not like a bunch of fans are going to go kill some Lassies now that they saw that shirt! The shirt simply states that we (tech) are going to kill A&M in effigy and it uses a very clever slogan relevant to a current issue. Don't be so sensitive all the time people. SHEESH!

27. You Americans take your football & University rivalries way too seriously. There is only one important sport. It's called hockey.

Posted at 1:18PM on Oct 10th 2007 by whamo

28. A TEXAS TECH STUDENT designed the shirt....NOT THE UNIVERSITY. Once again, the Aggies are going to try to paint the entire TTU campus as classless because of the actions of ONE student. I promise you, A&M has PLENTY of tasteless students. Just take a visit to any College Station bar and you can see that.

It is an awful shirt, but put it in perspective...it's ONE shirt, the rivalry will be played out on the football field, and again, Tech will put the Aggies in their place....somewhere behind Tech....

29. Sorry California Girl- not your fault. TMZ seems to be the idiot here. I suggest that TMZ refer to any news outlet for the real facts. How embarrassing to get the story so wrong. This shirt was created by a TECH student, not an Aggie. Aggies would NEVER create a shirt such as this. Gig'em Aggies!

Posted at 1:17PM on Oct 10th 2007 by Aggie Mom

30. Hey California Girl - obviously this shirt wasn't created by Aggie!!! Get your facts straight before you take a dig at our internationally recognized and respected University. Not a cute or funny shirt. As an aggie veterinarian, I just want you all to know that more people are doing this than Mike Vick...... Please be aware of what is going on in your community.

BEAT THE HELL OUTTA TECH!!
