Vick 'Em Shirts: Too Soon?

In an effort to poke a little fun at the Michael Vick scandal and irk rival Texas A&M, students at Texas Tech created a t-shirt depicting a football player hanging a dog with the slogan "Vick 'Em" across the front.
Michael Vick shirts
A&M and Tech play this weekend. The "Vick 'Em" slogan is in reference to the A&M slogan "Gig 'em" and the dog being hung in the photo is A&M's mascot. The player doing the hanging is wearing a number seven jersey -- that's Vick's number.

Amazingly enough, the shirts were created by the Theta Chi fraternity at Texas Tech in an effort to raise money for the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund. According to the Daily Toreador, Texas Tech's student paper, the t-shirts are no longer being produced, and the frat was kicked off campus as a result.

"We realize the shirts shouldn't have been printed," Geoffrey Candia, the creator of the shirts, told the AP. Hindsight is 20-20!

76. First of all it's just a joke! I am a HUGE animal lover and in no way am i offended by this shirt! Didnt A&M send us a box of glue once when our horse ran into the wall and died?? It was all in good fun so why is this any different? It's not like its promoting anyone to actually go and do this. It's something current going on in the media and students are just poking fun..get over it!!!!!!!

78. As a Tech Alumnus, I am embarassed about this t-shirt. I think it is in poor taste. It's a shame that one student can drag our university's name through the mud. However, I would like to add that as a student just a few years ago, I was a guest on the A&M campus and the UT campus for football games. I was jeered at with profanity and had drinks thrown at me simply for wearing a Tech T-shirt. However, I was able to see these as isolated incidents and understood that there are lot of aggies and longhorns that do have class. Please exhibit some of the class you claim to have and don't treat the entire Tech campus like trash just because of the poor taste of one frat boy.

79. The "Saw Em' Off" stickers are not made by Texas A&M, they're made by the owners of Aggieland Outfitters. The "Vick Em'" shirts were made by a University Fraternity.

80. Jen,
It is those kinds of comments that make you sound classless.

81. TMZ you have sunk to a new low....anyone showing that tshirt should be ashamed...
I wonder if you all realize that you are not helping stop animal cruelty by giving these
people space on your website....
Shame on you.

82. TMZ you have sunk to a new low...giving these people time and publishing a picture of this t shirt is not helping to fight animal cruelty...
Shame on you...

83. Taking a jab at Lubbock does not a classless person make. lol, the entire state of Texas (not just college students) makes jokes at the expense of towns like Lubbock, that doesn't make her classless. Ignorant maybe, but not classless. It's the same thing as Houstonians taking jabs at Dallasites and the other way around.

84. Very poor taste!!!

85. Good Grief! It's college rivalry humor! A&M has their whole identity around sawing Bevo's horns off.......where are the animal cruelty activists on that one?

87. Do you guys even read what the article says? It says that it was a fraternity at Tech, not A&M. I'm sure the guy thought he was doing a good deed by donating part of the proceeds to the Animal Defense fund. It doesn't show what kind of "mentality" Tech students have. Do you think all 28,000+ students that go there are all the same. Get a life! You are just jealous that Tech is going to whoop that ass this weekend!

WRECK EM' TECH!!!!!

88. Laura,
A person with class shows respect to others in all situations. Just because the "entire state of Texas" makes jabs like that doesn't mean it's right.

89. Thanks Sarah! lolinternet clearly didn't see the original article, therefore made comments that made her look uninformed. I'm glad that tmz corrected it. It is embarrassing that Tech is getting the blame for the shirt created by a student.

I was in College Station last October, and in their mall, there was a Halloween store that had our mascot Raider Red hanging from a tree....guess you Aggies think that's okay, or not as offensive.

To the person who called TTU a "community college", it must be doubly embarrassing that A&M can't beat us!!

And to think that Tech drinks more than A&M is just ludacrous....wake up, MOST college kids drink.

Let's all just wait until Saturday! then the Aggies can go back to College Station and cry until next year.

Gun's Up! (which I'm sure is offensive to someone.....get over it)

90. I love the comment by Laura: The "Saw Em' Off" stickers are not made by Texas A&M, they're made by the owners of Aggieland Outfitters.

She failed to finish the statement: They were BOUGHT by texas a&m students!

It is only repulsive if someone else makes it, but it is okay if we buy and wear the 'saw off horns" shirt since a&m didn't make it?????
Nice logic there, I would be interested to see how many sawed off horns shirts have been bought by a&m students and how many tech students will buy this one, then bring your argument back to the table. Give me a break
