Vick 'Em Shirts: Too Soon?

In an effort to poke a little fun at the Michael Vick scandal and irk rival Texas A&M, students at Texas Tech created a t-shirt depicting a football player hanging a dog with the slogan "Vick 'Em" across the front.
Michael Vick shirts
A&M and Tech play this weekend. The "Vick 'Em" slogan is in reference to the A&M slogan "Gig 'em" and the dog being hung in the photo is A&M's mascot. The player doing the hanging is wearing a number seven jersey -- that's Vick's number.

Amazingly enough, the shirts were created by the Theta Chi fraternity at Texas Tech in an effort to raise money for the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund. According to the Daily Toreador, Texas Tech's student paper, the t-shirts are no longer being produced, and the frat was kicked off campus as a result.

"We realize the shirts shouldn't have been printed," Geoffrey Candia, the creator of the shirts, told the AP. Hindsight is 20-20!

91. Funny: I was responding to the person who said that the "Saw Em' Off" shirts were the same. I was pointing out that the difference is that the Vick E'm shirts were made by a University Fraternity and the Saw Em Off shirts were made by an apparel company- not the school or anyone affiliated with the school. Anyone with a brain would know that the Vick Em shirts won't sell, they've been banned. I was merely pointing out the difference between the Saw Em Off and Vick Em shirts. Learn how to read.

92. The reason this shirt is a big deal is because it was made by a UNIVERSITY SUPPORTED FRATERNITY, NOT SOME SHIRT AT A MALL OR OTHER UNRELATED APPAREL STORE. QUIT COMPARING A SHIRT THAT GOT A FRATERNITY SUSPENDED AND IS GETTING NATIONAL ATTENTION TO SOME DUMB T-SHIRT YOU SAW IN A MALL--THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!!!!

93. As a former student at A&M I find this shirt very tacky.....Every year shirts are made and they are funny but this one crossed the line...not becuase they hung our mascot, but bc they referenced Michael Vick and had our a dog hanging. CLEVER yes, TACKY yes!

I can't believe that one guy would have drawn this and then it got past the fraternity board. WOW.....so yes while one guy drew it....at least 5 others backed him up....and then however many purchased it. Obviously the facutly at Tech thougt it was tacky or else they would have not been punished.

Can't wait for saturday! Maybe they will tear down their own goal post again and jam it into the stands after (if) they win. Why be soo excited about beating us if Tech has beat us 10 out of the 13 years? Makes no sense to me!

96. I'd be more embarassed to be considered a community college than have a football team beat mine. I'd rather go to an intelligent college than one with a football team that sucks but somehow always beats one team (A&M)

97. See I already disliked Tech for numerous other reasons. And as an Aggie and an animal lover I hate them more. This is a disgusting shirt. Idiots.

98. Hey 94, the post originally said "Theta Chi Fraternity at Texas A&M University" then it was corrected to Texas Tech (hence the NUMEROUS comments saying A&M didn't do it), you sound smart so I can see you wanting the shirt.

103. Thank you Sara!

Just a reminder of how classy the students of Texas A&M are (for those of you who have forgotten):

Two years later, on September 22, 2001, the first game for the Aggies after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the students organized a "Red, White and Blue-Out." Students assigned each deck a different color (red on third deck, white on second deck, and blue on first deck) to wear for the game against Oklahoma State. Despite the short notice, attendees followed the instructions, resulting in a red, white, and blue stadium, which became one of the most well-known images of unity in the sports community following the tragedy. More than $150,000 was raised in shirt sales, which was donated to FDNY charities.[19]

104. Oh please. This is tame compared to what Tech normally does. Normally they're hurling beer bottles, batteries, tortillas, or goal posts into the A&M stands. Every time I have driven to Lubbock for a game, I have had my tires slashed and car keyed. One year they spray painted the Tech logo on all the A&M campus buildings. Tech is the most trashy, classless university in the country, and their own students admit it, and are proud of it. This is old news.

105. A few years ago I took an official campus tour at A&M. Our tour guide in his corp uniform & boots proudly pointed out a campus building where a "Bevo" had been kept after he was kidnapped and later slaughtered. How can an ill advised cartoon be so offensive to AggieAmy and the other A&M animal lovers but full scale on-campus animal cruelty is somehow seen as proud Aggie lore?
