Mare Winningham: Jewgrass Darling

Best known for the '80s film "St. Elmo's Fire," Mare Winningham has gone from Brat Pack to Glatt pack! Winningham has combined her love of country/bluegrass music and her enthusiasm for Judaism to form a new sound known as -- Jewgrass! Oy vey, y'all!

The 48-year-old former shiksa was raised Catholic, and converted to Judaism five years ago. L'chaim! Earlier this year, Mare released an album of country/bluegrass/Jewish/folk songs entitled "Refuge Rock Sublime," which includes the tracks, "What Would David Do," "A Convert Jig" and the Israeli National Anthem,"Hatikva." Kenahorrah!

Mare brings her biblical twangs to L.A. tonight at Genghis Cohen, a Chinese restaurant/performance space in Hollywood. She now knows where to find good Chinese food.

16. She was nominated for best supporting actress in Georgia around 1994 or 1995. She won an Emmy for Amber Waves in 1980 for people who don't know who Mare is.

17. I love the hair! I miss the St. Elmo's Fire days...Demi, Ally, Mare, and even Molly..they were the 80s ladies...bring them all back in a prime time soap a la Dynasty and the world would be a better place.

27. I've always been a fan of Mare's. For you young un's going Mare who? she was also in Turner and Hooch, she played a vet and Tom Hank's love interest. Among other things she also made a couple of made for tv movies back in the 70's and sang in one them, I remember she could sing all right, nothing spectacular but not badly either. She was raised catholic? No wonder she had so many children. I agree about the picture, she's always had an unusual face but it really does look like the image has been altered. What's up with that?

28. Even if you have no idea who Mare is, go anyway just for the food...Genghis Cohen has the BEST No Name Duck... (yes, that's what it's called)... omg, crispy, melt-in-your-mouth skin and tender meat...I could spend all day just scarfing down the skin...great drinks, too, especially the Strawberry Avalanche... damn I'm getting hungry...
