Souljah vs. Soulja -- What's in a Name?

Soulja Boy"Crank That (Soulja Boy)" by Soulja Boy (left) is the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. If that name sounds familiar, it should.

Souljah Boy (notice the "h" at the end) was part of the group Mo Thugs during the 1990s. He claims that he has utilized that name for nearly 12 years and says he was "stunned" when DeAndre Way (Soulja Boy's real name), Interscope and Collipark decided to "infringe and misappropriate his name."

Thus far, Souljah Boy's lawyers say they are in the process of contacting all the appropriate parties and they hope to put the matter behind them quickly.

Soulja Boy's rep tells TMZ that they have not been contacted thus far, but also pointed out that technically Soulja Boy's full artist name is Soulja Boy Tell 'Em. Because that makes it soooo much less confusing.

When rappers fight over stage names, the only real loser is spelling. Soldier on!

16. wow.. you people are seriously hating.. Rap is not stupid, the artists who make dumb songs are stupid. Just like in every other genre of music.

Why should they use their real names? Its called a stage name, just like people make up names in other professions, hobbies and SCREEN NAMES..

What does reading a book have anything to do with anything? You're assuming someone can't read because they *purposely* spelled a word different. They spelled it how its pronounced. Also, authors don't always use their real names and spell words in alternate ways.

All I have to say is quit hating and realize this is no different than any other hobby/profession..

17. It's not the misspellings that makes them stupid, Almalieque, it's the lack of anything substantive in their songs. Not all rap is garbage, but Soulja Boy certainly is. And, yes, I've heard his entire CD. Rapping about a two-way? Classic.

use Soil ja and get this over with already.
It's all dieing anyway. It will be the only music stereo typed then destroyed by thugs.
I dont think there is any real talent out there that can turn that around before it's gone.

21. I have 35 pages of Soulja Boy's music. What I found out was his music mostly fell into these categories: sex, pimping, drugs (selling), violence against women (slap dat hoe), weapons and disrespect for life (threaten to shoot someone, getting his arsenal purchased), disrespect for teachers, the Law, etc. He was inspired by 50 Cents and aspires to be better than 50 Cents. What does that tell you? The dances and the tunes separate from the lyrics are OK. But the dances were formulated for the songs. Any one who dances to the songs can only replay words and melody as you dance. An intelligent and conscientious person would listen to the lyrics before accepting it. Otherwise, it shadows its immoral and unethical aroma on its victims.

24. please keep in mind, that we are talking about children. and in fact none of the rappers are using or have used the correct spelling of the word. this young man (superman) has made success in a rap song or hip hop, crunk whatever without wanting to shoot someone. the song may not make much sense or the dance but i can tolerate it simply because my daughter does not have to shake her behind to do the dance and my son still looks like a boy whens he does the dance. this is not that serious....let this young man do his song and dance....its far more worse that he could be doing!

25. The name's souljah boy, not sister souljah, not soulja slim, but I guess its o.k. when these big record companies or oldies singers wanna sue for using music or lyrics i guess it's allright then. Hell the money ain't coming out of his picket anyway. If you just do things properly none of this will happen. Learn to follow rules. And for the dummies who said that they could'nt spell, we know that you're not from the hood any how. It's just being artistic!!!!!!!!

26. Oh i guess it's O.K. when rich people decide to stop the less unfortunate from making money. Like Bill Cosby would'nt let my dude use FAT AL, he had 2 change it 2 AL FATZ. Sounds better anyhow, but understand the point, bill has the choice of letting him use his name or not, lil soulja boi never asked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

27. I'm glad Crank That (Soulja Boy) is the number one song on the billboard, but yall can't be dogging him out like that. Just because he got somebody else name. It's the same name swith a (h) at the end. Soulja Boy got a sexy name, i might name my child after him (DeAndre. Soulja Boy use his whole name in most of his songs, so everybody should know thats his whole artist name.

28. Someone tell me why a bunch of supposed adults are arguing over the stage name of a 17 year old.

Let's take this into perspective.

He's 17 years old. Why is it that much of a deal?If that's the stage name he wants, then let him have it. There's good reason many people don't use their real name.

Many artists have common names. My real name is common, hell there's three groups with my exact first and last name. If I were to go into the industry, I couldn't trademark my name without going through a load of crap to use it.

To save a headache most artists come up with a name and stick with it.

It's a name. People have different names for different situations. My girl calls me "sweety," thats her affectionate and pet name for me. Other folks have nicknames for me.

Are you going to get mad over that.

Need I mention that he's only 17?

Get over yourselves.

29. In all actually the spelling of the name does cause problems for people in the industry who are already using similar names. Soldier Boy, using the name for many years, from Wilson, NC is a much better rapper and has almost 1,000,000 hits on myspace. The hits didn't just start with the appearance of ringtone kid either. When you hear the radios say Soulja they don't say Solja Boy Tell Em. They gotta get real. This equates to lost of revenue for an artist who was making money but now can't market the very name that got him where he is with his fan base. I think the record label should have done research before accepting the use of a name that was easily available to see that was already in use or at least the sound so close that the public (even the skilled ears) can not tell the difference.
