Ellen's Doggone Nightmare

10/15/2007 1:40 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Talk show queen Ellen DeGeneres is caught in the middle of a doggy tug of war that has left an innocent girl in tears.
Ellen dog exclusive
Ellen and her girlfriend, Portia de Rossi, adopted Iggy (a Brussels Griffon mix) from Mutts and Moms, a dog adoption agency. But things didn't work out as Ellen planned -- her cats didn't get along with Iggy -- so she gave the pooch to her hairdresser, who has two kids, including 12-year-old Ruby.

Last night, a rep from the agency came to the hairdresser's home, claiming Ellen violated the contract by not informing the agency of the hand-off. The rep demanded to take the dog away. Ellen' s position -- yeah, she should have notified the agency, but she found a loving home and isn't that what counts? The agency rep stuck to her guns and removed the dog with cops present. Ruby is heartbroken; reduced to tears.

Ellen says, "I kept saying, 'If you want to be mad at me, be mad at me, but don't take it out on the family. Don't take it out on the dog.'"

TMZ has video of the confrontation at the hairdresser's home, as well as interviews with Ellen, Portia and little Ruby. You can watch the full story tonight on TMZ TV.

The Britney Spears Coffee and Gas Roundup

Britney Spears: Click to watchBrit was up to her usual tiresome tricks this weekend -- you'll never guess where she went!

Ding ding dang! If you said gas stations and Starbucks with her paparazzi entourage in tow -- you've won!

TMZ caught Spears in Malibu on Friday at her favorite coffee shop, where a chef from a Country Mart restaurant shouted, "Run 'em all over!" to Brit as she rolled up. She then hightailed it to a gas station, where she decided to read "The Chronicles of Narnia" as a photog pumped her gas. I's edumacated, y'all!

Britney hot -- click to launchBrit also stopped into a salon and was blinded by flashes on her way out -- once again shouting, "So over it!" ... but later asking for someone's hand to help guide her to the car. She even proved she still can sing, giving an operatic note before driving off.

Brit's Saturday was no less paparazzi-filled, with the popwreck sending a photog into Virgin Records in Hollywood to pick up a Justin Timberlake CD while she waited in her car.

All this and more in today's "Gimme More CS Lewis" edition of Spears Catcher.

Orlando the Hero? Puh-lease!

orlando goes off - click to play Orlando Bloom's reps are spinning his bad behavior following a serious car accident in the most ridiculous way we've seen in a long time.

Bloom was behind the wheel early Friday morning when his vehicle struck a parked Porsche, seriously injuring one of his passengers. Bloom's reaction -- he walked away from the car and his badly hurt passenger. Video from X17 tells the story -- paparazzi have to repeatedly tell Bloom that walking away constitutes hit and run. When it finally sinks in, Bloom walks back and pretends to be a hero, comforting the woman.

A statement released by Bloom's people on Friday said the star was "grateful that no one was seriously injured." We're no medical experts, but we'd call the FRACTURED NECK sustained by his friend, Cher Coulter, pretty serious.

And the cops are saying that Bloom was not drunk or under the influence of drugs at the time of the accident -- but they didn't conduct a blood alcohol test at the scene and none was ever given because, they say, because Orlando showed no signs of intoxication.

Was Orlando drinking? Watch him go off on a guy outside a club, minutes before the crash, and then decide for yourself.

T.I. Busted for Allegedly Buying Weapons

T.I. TMZ has obtained the affidavit and search warrant issued by The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) after T.I. allegedly had his bodyguard buy illegal machine guns and silencers for him.

Since T.I. is a convicted felon, he can't legally buy firearms, so, according to the ATF, he used his bodyguard to purchase them for him and members of his entourage. According to the affidavit, the bodyguard admitted to buying nine firearms for T.I. (real name Clifford Harris) and approximately 17 other firearms for people other than Harris.

He was charged with two felonies -- possession of three unregistered machine guns and two silencers, and possession of firearms by a convicted felon. A source told MediaTakeOut.com that "[The bodyguard] asked T.I. for an advance on his [pay] and T.I. gave it to him. ...Whatever he spent money on -- whether it be guns, drugs, or formula for his children -- T.I. had nothing to do with it."

TMZ spoke with Chevrolet this morning, which features the rapper in one of its biggest ad campaigns. When asked whether they planned to drop him as a spokesman, a rep for the automaker only said they are "reviewing the situation."

If Chevy does indeed drop him, there's always Smith & Wesson!

UPDATE: This afternoon, the ATF showcased the guns seized in the case (pictured below).

The lady from Mutts and Moms will probably sell the dog on E-bay!!! Shame on that organization. If their rules state that you have to inform them should the dog need to be returned and that was not done, fine...it's Ellen's bad but to compound a bad situation with poor judgement by Mutts & Moms, just makes the issue even worse and a PR issue for this organizaiton. It's silly, if the little girl loves her dog and they have an adequate home for the animal, it should be OK. Mutts & Moms should get over themselves!!! Give the dog back and get real, people!

I'm aware that agencies have certain rules and policies, but this is a travesty! I think since the dog was given to a loving home, the agency could let them keep the dog, pending an investigation of the family (or whatever they do). Then, if and when the family checks out, which they probably will, the dog can stay there and everyone is happy! Even though rules are created for protection, rules can also be bent when necessary! It happens every day; and in this case, that's what is necessary. There are just too many dogs being euthanized every year because there aren't enough homes for them. Why add this one to the list when there is a loving family for him? Sometimes the system just sucks!

I volunteer with my local no-kill animal shelter as a foster parent. There is a very good reason for the clause in the contract that says the agency is to be notified of the dogs being moved. Pets are not disposable, every pet deserves to have someone looking out for it. In this case Ellen gave the dog to a good home, but many times that isn't the case. The entire thing could have been avoided if she had just abided by the contract SHE signed. Or do you think celebrities shouldn't have to abide by the same rules the rest of us do?

Here is a sad example of animal adoptions -they're not easy - agencies don't make it easy. Should we protect and make sure a dog or other animals get a loving home - of course. But the experience I had in not being able to adopt for a senior leads me to think these agencies are a scam. They take your dollars - lots of them because we think it's going to a good cause - and then it seems they don't want to give the little guys up. What a set up - a job with lots of pets on someone's donated dollar!

Having been active in dog rescue for the last five years, I'm reasonably certain Ellen is wrong on this one. Almost every adoption contract from a reputable rescue or shelter REQUIRES that the dog be returned to the rescue or shelter should the adoption not work out. Ellen presumably signed the contract and is bound by its terms. It's not a matter of who is mad at who; it is a contractual obligation enforceable at law.

This notion that animals have no value and may be just given away contributes to the plight of homeless animals of all sorts. Most rescues and shelters expend a great deal of our very limited resources rescuing the dog, getting it healthy, training it, screening applications, doing phone interviews, checking references, and doing home visits. All of this work is done and expense incurred on behalf of the animal and to help us make the best match between the dog and the family. If WE don't insist that these animals have value, how can we expect our adopters or the general public to accept it?

Ellen was wrong, but, so was the agency. The agency had to do something publically because of Ellen's high profile, but there is no reason they couldn't have done their investigation without removing the dog and only removing him if they felt the home was inappropriate.

IT IS SUPRISING THAT AGENCIES PUT CHILDREN IN HOMES WITH BARELY A BACKGROUNG CHECK, BUT ANIMALS HAVE TO GO THROUGH SUCH STRENGENT REQUIREMENTS AND FOLLOW-UP FOR ADOPTION.

NO. 26 - PAULA, YOU COULDN'T BE MORE WRONG!!!! THIS IS NOT ELLEN'S FAULT!!!!

SIX ADOPTED CATS, FOUR ADOPTED DOGS, TWO ADOPTED HORSES ... I AM VERY AWARE OF WHAT THE POLICIES ARE ON ADOPTING!!!

BOTTOM LINE, WHILE ELLEN SHOULD HAVE CONTACTED THE AGENCY, THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT IT WAS A SIMPLE .... LET ME EMPHASIZE "SIMPLE" MISTAKE...THAT COULD HAVE BEEN REMEDIED VERY EASILY!

THE ONLY THING THIS REP SHOULD HAVE DONE IS CONTACT ELLEN; PAY AN IN-HOME VISIT TO THE NEW FAMILY; RUN A PERSONAL AND VET REFERENCE CHECK ON THE FAMILY; ALLOW THE FAMILY TO FOSTER THE DOG WHILE THE REFERENCES ARE BEING CHECKED.

COMING ARMED WITH POLICE AND TAKING THE DOG FROM A LOVING HOME WAS NOTHING SHORT OF RIDICULOUS!!! I GUARANTEE YOU THAT IN NO TIME, THIS PLACE WILL BE OUT OF BUSINESS...AND UNFORTUNATELY, ONLY THE ANIMALS WILL BE LEFT TO SUFFER FROM THIS PERSON'S ABSURD ANTICS!!!

I think that TMZ will not be happy until they are the first to report with live fotage of Britney Spears Putting a gun to her head and pulling the trigger. Wow what a story, but then they will still have a story and I can read the headlines now. " Who Killed Britney" or "Why did no one try to help this young women" or "First Princess Diana and now Britney Spears who next? Or the one you know all the media will run with "Fame, Beauty, Talent and wealth what went wrong". You can use whatever headline you want (I don't need the credit) Hey here is an idea TMZ why don't you buy her the gun? Good luck guys on Judgement day.

Isnt it the purpose of the agency to find a good home for the dog? So, the dog has a good home, and the agency should get over itself and leave the dog with the family Ellen gave the dog to. Knowing Ellen 'as the world does', she wouldnt put the dog in a bad home. Get over it agency. Too bad it isnt 'dont be cruel to animal week'.

WHAT A CROCK, I RESCUE WOLF/DOGS, I DO NOT ADOPT THEM OUT, THEY HAVE A LIFELONG HOME WITH ME. IF THE HOME THAT PUP WENT TO WAS A LOVING HOME, AND I'M SURE IT WAS BECAUSE OF ELLEN, WHY WOULD THEY USE GESTOPO TACTICS TO TAKE THE PUP BACK? THE WOMEN COULD HAVE CHECKED THE HOME RIGHT THEN AND THERE, BUT NO, LETS TEAR THE PUP AWAY FROM A CHILD. SHE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HER SELF.
