Son of Lassie's Trainer: Give the Dog Back!

Bob Weatherwax, famed Hollywood dog trainer and son of Rudd Weatherwax, who established the famous Lassie line of collies, feels strongly about the storm created around Ellen DeGeneres and her good intentions in placing an adopted pet. Bob is pictured here with his current collie, Laddie.
Bob Weatherwax and Laddie
Over the 60+ years that Rudd and Bob found homes for sons and daughters of the nine generations of Lassies, their first choice was always a family with children. Says Bob, "Kids and dogs belong together. Nothing is better than for a child to grow up with a dog and learn about loving care and responsibility." While he admits that, legally, Ellen did sign a contract, he also thinks that the adoption organization could make an occasional exception to its policies.

"After all," Bob says, "what's really important here? Having a dog find a home with a committed family or making it impossible for families to adopt dogs?"

Lassie's trying to tell us something!

32. They don't have to put him down to avoid returning him. It's their choice where he goes, legally.

33. Seriously People. I adopted two dogs from rescue groups and I felt like it would have been easier to adopt an African orphan than a puppy. Pet rescues are intensely protective of puppy adoptions more so than adult dog adoptions. Ellen should have followed procedures to ensure that the not-for-profit rescue could screen her hairdresser to ensure that it was a proper placement. Stop crying because the rules apply to all. I support the rescue groups because there is good cause for their rules. I signed a contract stating for any reasons if I am unable to care for the puppy I would contact the rescue so did Ellen. Get over it.

34. Figures somebody associated with NaziMoms & Mutts would show up here.
If you have knowledge about whether Iggy is safe then share it.
Otherwise don't profess to know what is true or not.
If iggy was put to sleep things will get worse for these idiots. Already stole the dog from a child. Now killing the dog. So many mistakes.
And yet you defend them?
Why do you have so much faith? Do share please.

35. State of California SUSPENDED Mutts & Moms from doing business as an animal rescue non-profit organization. Their contract with animal adoptees is worthless. Ellen did not breach a written contract.

38. The information I got was newer. The article says itself the dog hadn't yet been trasnferred. Basically I read Mutts & Moms was told they cant rehome the animal because they did not take legal means to reclaim it and thereis pending court action. So what did they do? They put him to sleep. Just wait you'll see.

39. Support your local animal shelter by volunteering your time or expertise, donating $ or food. Adopt a pet while you're at it. Shelters need help distributing spay and neuter literature door-to-door, licensing requirements literature, photographing animals ready for adoption, cleaning cages, walking dogs, kitty cuddling and socialization, you name it. While some "animal rescue groups" perform admirably - there are way too many fringe "rescuers" who are one animal away from becoming animal "hoarders." We just had a woman in Oregon who was found with 160 rabbits in her house, along with 88 dead ones in her fridge. When police removed them, she found out where they were temporarily housed and stole them back. Google 'hillsboro rabbit lady' for the story.

41. Saying he was killed proves many of you are not fighting for the dog, but desperately grabbing at anything and everything, real or imagined, to bring negative attention to rescues. It's more than obvious you don't give a damn about the animals, you're just bitter towards rescues and out to get them. Damn the consequences, right?

42. this is getting boring - anything new on Paris?

43. If she really did kill him wow things will get so much worse! Why didn't she just give him back? How will we ever be sure the dog is safe. She can lie and say he's been adopted out but that could just be another lie. We can't know for sure, until Iggy is back home with the girls or his remains turned over to his rightful owners.
