Son of Lassie's Trainer: Give the Dog Back!

Bob Weatherwax, famed Hollywood dog trainer and son of Rudd Weatherwax, who established the famous Lassie line of collies, feels strongly about the storm created around Ellen DeGeneres and her good intentions in placing an adopted pet. Bob is pictured here with his current collie, Laddie.
Bob Weatherwax and Laddie
Over the 60+ years that Rudd and Bob found homes for sons and daughters of the nine generations of Lassies, their first choice was always a family with children. Says Bob, "Kids and dogs belong together. Nothing is better than for a child to grow up with a dog and learn about loving care and responsibility." While he admits that, legally, Ellen did sign a contract, he also thinks that the adoption organization could make an occasional exception to its policies.

"After all," Bob says, "what's really important here? Having a dog find a home with a committed family or making it impossible for families to adopt dogs?"

Lassie's trying to tell us something!

91. Sorry Chuck, a microchip is considered proof of ownership. The name of the chip is the owner and with a contract stating the terms it's even more solid, but unnecessary with the chip.

92. By the way, the rule about no children in the adopting homes is for this reason: Most rescue dogs do not have happy backgrounds. Many were abused, and can't handle the stress of children under 14. Children often times have the worst manners with dogs, and can hurt or scare them, provoking bites, and god knows what else from the terrified dogs. They rule out children to protect the children as well as to protect the dogs. Obviously, people have dogs and have children with successful relationships. However, rescues do not want the moral responsibility of having placed a dog into a home where it later bites a child.

93. This man is an expert and the voice of reason. Is the control freak queen at Mutts listening? She needs to be closed down immediately and committed to psychiatric institution. I hope that people hound this nutjob until she flees the state!

94. That man is a Collie breeder and trainer. He uses them for profit, nothing more. Expert he is NOT!!! He knows nothing about this issue or the breed of dog.

95. Why didn't ELLEN give this PUPPY a chance? Good dogs are made, not born. It's an animal, a baby animal, they're not born with household manners and obedience training. This poor puppy was only given two weeks. Yeah, she cares a lot about him. Riiiight!

97. Iggy is in a new home already. He's been adopted, where he won't have to be a perfect puppy to have and keep a home. Sign whatever you want, it won't change a thing.

99. 'i agree with Weatherwax completely.

I think this has brought to light the problem with so many of these amateur-run shelters that, in fact, they might actually be contributing to the problem they're trying to fix. With their ridiculously stringent requirements and reluctance to adopt out animals, many of these animals die without ever having a true home or have to be euthanized.

My experience with trying to adopt from shelters has never been good, but I don't spread that around because I truly believe that shelter animals should be the first to get homes.

102. Ditto w/ #1. Gorgeous collie. Whether the first, "Lassie" (which was really a, "Laddie," for on-screen size) was a pure bred or not, this dog line is now worth a mint. And, definitely worth more than the $12M the, "queen of mean," bequeathed her mutt, with no lineage.

103. I volunteer at a no-kill shelter and yes we do investigate the possible adoptees, their homes are checked and vets references are called, but to have a age rule for children of 14 or older is a bit harsh. Funny that the organization is called "Mutts and Moms" would set a age when every case is different, and what matters is the home a loving place for the animal and are the kids gentle and respectful to animals. I think ages 6-14 is a reasonable age when the whole picture is looked at. Alot of adults should never own a pet, but that is another story.

104. I think that the pet adoption agency just wanted to brag that a celebrity had adopted one of her pets and since ellen gave it away she got upset . That lady is a losser who has no feelings and she has the guts to come out on t.v and say oh yes i have cried too. How pathetic.

105. give ellen a break for CHRIST sakes, she did what SHE thought was in the dogs best intrest, we all know she did not plan to have this news put out on the streets, the dog just wasnt for HER home. and what does GAY have anything to do with this ? thats HER biusiness , if you dont approve of gays then tend to your own circle of friends , you are not FORCED to be near any of them , i am NOT gay but to each their own. bottom line is the dog just wasn't for Ellens household so she thought in her own mind she was doing the dog a favor, dang it .......get over it and show some respect for others or stay out of their business.
