Son of Lassie's Trainer: Give the Dog Back!

Bob Weatherwax, famed Hollywood dog trainer and son of Rudd Weatherwax, who established the famous Lassie line of collies, feels strongly about the storm created around Ellen DeGeneres and her good intentions in placing an adopted pet. Bob is pictured here with his current collie, Laddie.
Bob Weatherwax and Laddie
Over the 60+ years that Rudd and Bob found homes for sons and daughters of the nine generations of Lassies, their first choice was always a family with children. Says Bob, "Kids and dogs belong together. Nothing is better than for a child to grow up with a dog and learn about loving care and responsibility." While he admits that, legally, Ellen did sign a contract, he also thinks that the adoption organization could make an occasional exception to its policies.

"After all," Bob says, "what's really important here? Having a dog find a home with a committed family or making it impossible for families to adopt dogs?"

Lassie's trying to tell us something!

121. I agree with "addy" above. Just because Ellen made the mistake, should the rules be broken? I like Ellen and watch her show often. The rich and famous get too many breaks as it is. She is the guilty party here. She made the mistake not the adoption agency. They need to enforce the rules across the board so that the "M. Vicks" out there don't get to do whatever they want with animals. She's great, she's fun, but she is not above the rules/laws anymore than you or I!

Should Mel, Paris, L. Lohan, N. Richie get off for DUIs? hey,....I'm just sayin'....they used too.

122. I couldn't agree with this guy more. What Mutts and Mom's is doing is absolutely horrible They are not doing what's in best interest of the dog not one bit. I hope the people involved are terminated, this could border on animal cruelty. The dog has a good home only to be taken out and put BACK into a shelter? COME ON already!!!

123. i can't believe they took the dog away! or, maybe i can. my husband and i had been unsuccessfully trying to rescue a yorkie or a maltese to be a sister/brother to our papillon and though we have excellent references, live in a large house, treat our current dog like a daughter, trained her very well, ect, ect, ect...i couldn't get even one of the supposed "rescue" places to return our calls or applications. i understand why they are so stringent with the adoptions to an extent because they want to make sure you want the dog, but we got so fed up trying and getting nowhere, that we went out and bought a dog from a breeder because we feel we are "rescuing" her from the possibility of someone buying her cause she's "cute" and then getting frustrated by not trainining her right and giving her away.

124. My son has autism and is non verbal, recently also diagnosed with
severe retardation. We adopted a boxer from a no kill shelter in
San Antonio. Her name is Elsie. We got her fathers day. She is loving
and wonderful. We all bonded immediately. I dont like that people are
threatening this stupid woman with bodily harm BUT I do hope she has
trouble sleeping nights. We all know Ellen loves animals, and kids &
is always looking to do good. GIVE THE DOG BACK TO THE KIDS!

125. #117 Joker2U Imagine if those people you keep updated had found out you were moving & came & took the dog because you were leaving the area? there are many rescues that take back a dog if the adoptive family moves! That said what rescue did you get this dog from that let go of a ROTTIE that was considered to be untrainable? Again to me that is unheard of *unless perhaps* you are a experienced Rottie person who they *know* as such. I meanif Cesar the dog trainer wanted a rottie I'd be pretty secure knowing he'd be able to handle it. I wouldn't wait to see how the dog is getting along in your back yard!

126. #110 ME First I'm not questioning the meaning of the *word* ME or it's meaning but the meaning behind a person using it as their name when they are defending the poor practices of an irresponsible group of people parading as a *rescue group*! When you defend them I think "this must be one of them" because no one else who's reputable would defend them!

Next You're wrong on ALL counts! I don't believe everything I read & that's why I question YOUR qualifications to speak on rescue because you are clearly mis-informed & as far as the kids with this breed of dogs you're WRONG again!

We're not seeing kids that are "rarely seen" with the dogs! Go to one of their breed specialty shows & you will see an ENTIRE ring filled with kids handling this very kind of dog!!!!!!!!! They are not All related to the breeders! You say you've been "in the fancy" for how long? You should know ALL of these things! They are in the agility rings with kids & in 4H &/or obedience ALL the TIME!!!!!!!!!!!

As someone WHO HAS put people on contracts I can tell you that breeders do not put people on a contract saying a person has to relinguish a dog if they are unable to keep it! They don't want a person who is willing to relinguish a dog AT ALL! They want the couple who's going to fight for the dog over a divorce just like they would over who gets the kids!!!!!!!! When I tell/ask a perspective adopter "If you should find yourself in a position where you couldn't keep this dog would you be willing to return him here to me?" The answer I WANT to hear is "The only reason I would have for not being able to care for this animal would be in the case of illness or death & I would be providing the same measures for care for this dog as I would for my kids. And yes I would certainly bring him/her back here as one of those measures." I don't want someone who's looking to "give the dog back when they have to move" or who are going to need to "get rid of him because the kid it belonged to went to college" or they decided now it's time to go back to work & they can't handle a dog now & so they just "bring it back" or some such thing! A dog IS for life & I don't want someone who's anticipating sending the dog back from where it came from even if it's the rescue group! A dog goes through a HUGE amount of truama when they are abandoned & I don't want a dong experiencing MORE being rehomed over & over & over again! I want what ever dog I'm placing in the home that is it's FOREVER HOME! And the person that is willing to just "bring the dog back if we move" isn't truly anticipating having the dog for life!!!!!!!!! I want the person who is committed to it FOR life like they are their children! They wouldn't just drop the kids off at the hospital where they came from saying "can't take it any more".

And now you keep saying "this is a different breed" & "you have to know the breed" exactly what is your experience with this breed that you are this authority on it? And why would you be defending a irresponsible so called rescue group that sends out dogs INTACT?! Frankly that is what really made me question you! No responsible dog person WOULD EVER back up a person who would do such a thing! And it doesn't matter WHO they are adopting it out too!

Oh & as far as believing all I read no I don't believe this rescue group. They're a pet shop! And I will call attention to them in every way I can! Oh & I also still question your experience "in the fancy" because anyone in the fance KNOW that 12 yrs. olds OFTEN handle toy dogs, and that at ANY breed specialty show you'll find an entire ring FULL of kids handling the dog & they are not all just related to the breeder! You'd know this if you were in the fancy. And questioning me on this just google the specialty shows & look at the catalogs! Lots of kids in junior handling & the names of the breeders associated with the dogs such as the breeders & owners are all in there. They're not all just related to the breeders.

127. If this woman was smart she would give the dog back & make up
with Ellen. That way she would call attention to her cause. You
know Ellen would have her on the show (knowing Ellen probably
on a weekly basis). She could find more good homes for these dogs.
It would be like free advertizing. This isnt Britney Spears or
Paris Hilton. Ellen is obviously responsible and loving. This is just
crazy. Give the dog back!!

128. AMEN! I was just thinking that dogs and children go together! My brother, sister and I grew up with dogs, hamsters, fish...all sorts of pets. If Iggy was in a loving, stable home why would these women decide to yank him out of his home? The answer: DRAMA (which they obviously did not think far enough ahead as to how this would make them look), MONEY and 15 seconds of fame? The whole issue with some of these rescue organizations and their over-the-top restrictions is what should be questioned. I agree with the idea of rescuing animals from local shelters. Perhaps when people stop going to these private organizations they will wake up.

129. To Me: How are children supposed to learn about caring for a dog if they can't own a dog when they are CHILDREN?? Are adults (who were never allowed to own a dog as a child) supposed to just one day know how to care for a pet? Who made you and every other rescue agency who implements these regulations the one to decide who can or cannot own a dog? Am I the only one that thinks this is just insane?

130. please read the post
Said ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres, "Ms. DeGeneres' love and concern for animals has become practically iconic. As such, we have the utmost respect for her actions in trying to provide loving homes for animals in need-she sets a great example for not just other celebrities, but the entire American public."

"We would encourage Mutts & Moms to re-visit their approach to this situation and look forward to a positive outcome that reinforces the importance of pets in our society and the human-animal bond."

lets give Ellen a break huh?

131. The 14-year old age requirement is ridiculous! Kids should definitely have pets because: 1. The best thing an animal can teach a child is about unconditional love and caring for another living thing. 2. Children with animals usually grow up to be very caring, sensitive, unselfish, and loving adults. 3. There are children who can't or don't feel comfortable turning to an adult when they have a problem, and the pet becomes a source of comfort and security. To deny a child that experience based on a trivial issue like age really shows how heartless Mutts & Moms really are!

132. #124

You asked why "Me". If you have to ask, you certainly don't understand the meaning. It's not that complicated, is it?

You stated you "read" this and that several times the last couple of days. Also, you stated the information like facts and never even listed sources. Maybe it's not what you read, rather what you make up?

I have show dogs, some from big time history making sire and dams. I know what I see at shows and you will rarely find BG and children, but again, that's completely different. It's different, because it's experienced breeders and experienced owners, not your average family who can't tell a Newfoundland from a Saint Bernard or a straight shoulder from good angulation or a friendly tongue flick from one of anxiety (pre-bite), etc. I know it helps your case to lump the experienced and inexperienced together, but it's not comparable in the least and you know it. Experience changes everything, however, ideal for a BG is still an adult home.

All responsible breeders (& a few not so responsible, glorified backyard breeders) place dogs only in "forever homes", but things can go wrong and they step up to the plate regardless of the reason. No limitations and no questions asked, just return the dog. Breeders who have restrictions on it, should not be breeding!

This puppy went to a well known (world famous) home and was there only a matter of weeks. I doubt they feared Ellen becoming a puppymill or advertising stud service, lol. Unless he's six months or older, there was no worry about him breeding anyhow. Pediatric spays and neuters are controversial. It's not uncommon for puppies to be placed without being fixed, instead they come with limited registration (when it applies) and a spay/neuiter contract. It's a puppy, one that was placed with no other dogs and with a well known person.

I don't care what you believe or don't believe about me (ones that matter KNOW), because I can tell you're just preaching what you pick up along your wannabe route. I had a feeling, but the more you post, the more convinced I am.

133. Ellen has a poor track record with adopted animals, this is NOT the first she gave up on. She may love animals, but she doesn't love them enough to give them a chance and provide a forever home.

134. Debbie: Dogs are wonderful for children (providing the parents are responsible parents/pet owners), but certain breeds are better suited to adults.

135. TO ALL ELLEN BASHERS!

This is to all those that resorted to 1st grade name (Lezbo- that wuz your best sho?t!)calling AND this is a reminder of those who in Ellen's name, without her consent, resorted to threats of violence.

I want you to think about this: When the woman from Moms & Mutts called Ellen to inquire about the dog, she was HONEST. The woman however, responded to Ellen's honesty with deceit. Period. The End Ellen's frankness about the dog should have been a HUGE red flag for the woman that Ellen was not aware of the infamous clause. Had she SIMPLY said- "Ellen, you know that violates the contract, right?" might have given Ellen a CHANCE to explain and work it out like adults. But, no, she chose to lie to Ellen, to the new owners and then so callously hold the dog away from the children in stead of waiting to go in with the police. I think that was pretty cold, but in NO WAY deserving of a death threat!

If ANY of you that chose to spew hate, if you had actually ever stopped to learn all that Ellen has done, for people like us, the non famous people. Case in point: Ellen saw a young man on you tube who could leap over a car and she love it. So, they tracked the young man down and invites him to be on her show. He was great- they brought a car onstage and he jumped over it, then later jumped over 5 or 6 cars all in a row! He later told Ellen that his dream was to be in a Nike commercial. SO, Ellen calls the CEO of Nike and she surprised him today with an appearance at the opening of a new NIke store, $5000 shopping spree at Nike and a spot in the new spot for NIke.com! She made a dream come true for regular guy like us. He's not her first either- not by a long shot.

So, yea, Ellen's a real bitch, hugh?
