LAPD May Have Erred in Ellen Dog Case

TMZ has spoken with law enforcement sources -- who now seem to acknowledge the LAPD may have made a mistake by letting Marina Batkis, owner of Mutts and Moms, take back the dog Ellen DeGeneres gave to her hairstylist.

The story aired last night on TMZ TV.

1. I think it's sick the way the agency took that dog away. The get all high and mighty over Ellen breaking the rules when they broke the rules in the first place by not having the dog fixed first, not having Ellen fill out the proper forms, or doing a background check on her, Why cus she's a celebrity. Then they have the nerve to say she should not get her way because she's famous!! This is so wrong on so many levels.

2. What the hell were the cops doing getting involved in this anyway, don't they have more important things to worry about in LA?? Cruella DeVille must have known one of them and called in a favor. I hope those two go out of business after they find the remaining animals homes.

4. That's why Muts and Moms didn't change the dogs tags for an entire month. They had a hold of that dog even though Ellen purchased it. Corilla De Vil is the douche bag of the week TMZ.

5. Duh!?! You think? The DOG BELONGS to Ellen..........She "erred" by giving it to the hairdresser......It should have been returned to Ellen to "straighten out"......But, Ruby IS the rightful owner because Ellen made a choice to find Iggy a more suitable family. BUT, the police officer SHOULD have MADE SURE, BEFORE HE handed over IGGY to the WRONG OWNER! WHAT WAS HE THINKING!!!!!!!!!!!!

8. Ellen is WRONG! She broke the rule. The rule is there for a reason! (And she didn't BUY the dog, she adopted it.) The dog is aparantly in a new lovinghome and Ellen should grow up and stop using her access to the media to garner support for an insupportable position. You may not agree with what Mutts and Moms did-- but they did it for a reason. They place dogs in GOOD HOMES where htey will be caredfor for the rest of their lives. They had not screened Ellen's hairdresser. Period. Ellen is simply wrong.

10. As a surprise after knee surgery, I adopted a cat for my older sister. When she took the cat to the vet and the names didn't match the agency contacted me. I explained I didn't realize there was a 'clause' in the contract. They ran a check on my sister at her vet and the agency SCOLDED me for what I did, but allowed the cat to remain with mysister and her eldery husband. Ellen and her friend got ripped.

11. I have never seen so many comments with no apparent understanding of the situation that occurred. Ellen and Portia did NOT buy the dog, they adopted it. As someone who has adopted dogs from a local rescue as well as the SPCA, I know that one NEVER completely owns an adopted dog. The ownership is conditional, meaning that any violation of contract results in retraction of the adoption. It's really basic and common to most if not all shelters.

Another common rule is to restrict adoptions for pets. At the Phila. SPCA, my 6 month old puppy that I adopted almost 4 years ago could not be adopted by a family with children under 13 years. I discovered I was pregnant a week after the adoption. Obviously I did not return the dog because he would not be a puppy by the time my child was born. I know now that my family is not one that many shelters would approve for puppy adoption and that I may be forced to go to a breeder if I want another dog years down the line. My son will still only be a small child. I know that I can handle any puppy/child situation, but I'm a very experienced dog owner. I respect that shelters must make the best decision for their dogs.

As for any claim of wrongful action, it really has nothing to do with the rights of Batkis and Mutts and Moms over their dogs. It has everything to do with the fact that their paperwork for incorporation status was not complete. If the information is correct, Ellen deGeneners was never able to legally adopt any animal from Mutts and Moms making the entire transaction void. I have no idea where that leaves this family but it is still not legally their dog. As far as I can tell, it is not legally anyone's dog and probably should be sent to another shelter for adoption. Just because it winds up in your home, doesn't make it your dog.

Last point, I hope that many people who criticize Mutts and Moms would take time to research the disgusting dumping of millions of dogs (and cats) each year. One of the worst offenders, unfortunately, are families with young children. They have the best of intentions but that doesn't mean a hill of beans when the dog is dumped back at the local shelter or dog pound for euthanasia.

12. SO GIVE IT BACK!!! THE POLICE SHOULD DO SOMETHING AND FIX THEIR MISTAKE

13. The media refers to the hairstylist's children as small kids; looks like to me they are tweens or young teenagers, they have bonded with Iggy for two weeks; they were given the dog by Ellen as a gift and, according to Judge Judy, you do not have to return a gift - so there. Now, according to reports, Iggy has been given to a third home; makes no sense. This Mutts & Moms place needs to be investigated.

14. Why would Ellen make a big deal on her show about the Doggie problems?? Obviously she didn't care about the consequences. Just think!! You better be careful WHO you give your Dog to, cause the L.A. Police will be all over you!! Maybe those Doggie Adoption Idiots have a site that Identifies people as not being up to their standards.

15. Ellen should never have brought this issue to her show. She was clearly trying to use her power and influence to get what she wanted and that was NOT the right way to go about it. She was being a bully, plain and simple. The popular girl on the playground sent all her little friends after another kid. Ellen KNEW perfectly well that her fans were going to get mad and start storming Mutts & Moms demanding that Iggy be returned to Ruby. She has a lot of nerve telling them not to threaten Mutts & Moms when she had to know right from the beginning that that's exactly what they were going to do. She caused it. If Ellen had decided to handle the matter a little more diplomatically instead of crying to her fans about it so that they'd stick up for her, Iggy might be back with Ruby already.
