Akon Concert Goes Awry; Canopy Collapses

AkonTMZ has learned that several people -- including a drummer -- were injured while setting up for an Akon concert at Emory University in Atlanta.

According to several eyewitnesses, about an hour ago, crews were working about to set up lights on the stage for tonight's Fall Band Party starring Akon -- when they heard the canopy crack and fall, causing the left side of the stage to collapse. Akon was not in the area at the time.

We're told two or three people, including students, were injured. A reporter with the Emory Wheel tells TMZ that fire trucks and ambulances responded to the scene, and campus police cordoned off the area.

We're told the show for tonight has been canceled. We were unable to reach a rep for Akon.

20. akon is extremely talented. this story has nothing to do with akon as a person or an artist. this is about the person or persons who was supposed to be setting up the stage and did not make sure everything was safe. people need to listen to akon's first album to hear his story. i honestly think that of all the rappers out there today akon is the best. i am sure that akon feels bad for the people who were hurt..but it was not his fault. please stop commenting on his looks and talent..akon is good looking and very talented. (by the way i am a white middle aged lady and i think akon is great!) I LOVE AKON!!

21. akon is very talented. probably one of the most talented rappers out there today...listen to his first album. it is wonderful. there are a couple of songs on there that are great. i love ghetto, trouble nobody, locked up. (the version without p. miller is much better) akon has worked with a lot of top selling artists today. gwen stefani...snoop doggy dog, eminen to just name a few. i get the feeling that most of the people commenting on this story don't even know anything about akon..they are just small minded individuals who like to make fun of people who are different than they are. Akon is great! (i am a white middle aged lady and i love akon!!)

27. yes..it certainly is sad that in today's world when the likes of britney, paris, lindsay, hannah montana are considered to be great music talents and the soundtrack for highschool musical is number 1 on the charts people are tearing down a person like akon who has real talent. akon writes his own music and rhymes..he actually does his own singing. akon has written music for a lot of other artists today. if britney spears never made another album or sang another note the world would be a better place. sit down and listen to akon's album..he actually has something to say. unlike britney who songs are basically a lot of heavy breathing and baby talk. for eveyone posting negative things about akon as an artist..i wonder how many of you have actually listened to his music.

28. so akon is always in trouble, huh? when was the last time he was out without his underwear and flashing his privates to everyone? when was the last time he hit a parked car and took off without even attempting to find the owner? what retail stores and restaurants did he take in a little doogie disregarding the other patrons and shoppers and not caring about the public health hazard? gee, i haven't heard about even one papparazzi that akon has run over lately. i don't think akon has been to re-hab even once let alone checking in and out of re-habs faster than he changes his clothes. i really wonder if the people who are talking trash about akon even know who he is..let alone ever listened to his music. akon is no angel and he has been to jail....but he used that time to learn from his mistakes and become a better person. akon wrote the material for his first album while he was in jail. some of his songs are very deep and thought provoking. i see someone brought up the incident in trinidad...so akon danced with a 15 yr. old girl. do you think when that girl jumped on stage she told him she was only 15? yeah right....if a young girl jumped up on stage at a bruce springsteen concert would it be a big deal? to everyone commenting on akon i challenge you to listen to his first album...he wrote all his own songs..his own beats. no one can deny that akon is talented. just listen to his album and then compare it to any of britney's songs and then see if you can tell me (with a straight face!) that britney is the better musician and artist.

29. i see beauty in all races and people come in all shapes and sizes. some of the prettiest people are the ugliest on the inside. akon's beauty comes from his soul and from his message. i guess if he was a pretty little blonde flashing his panties and who's major claim to fame was a boob job people would be talking about what a wonderful person akon is. and i kind of get the feeling that akon is pretty smart..after all he writes all his own music, lyrics, beats. he also writes for a lot of other big artists today. when was the last time eminim or gwen called up britney and asked for her help writing a song? oh gee, i forgot..britney doesn't write her own music does she? hell, she doesn't even really sing her own songs either...it's just a whole lot of heavy breathing and baby talk. i really wonder what everyone who is making derogatory comments about akon looks like? unless you are brad pitt or george clooney i suggest you take a look in the mirror before you start making fun of other people. akon is beautiful! akon is talented! akon is a great musician!
