Prince, Record Label Go Crazy over Dancing Baby

In the battle between record companies and Internet users over copyright issues, an 18-month-old baby dancing to Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" finds himself smack in the middle.

Stephanie Lenz posted a 29-second video clip of her son dancing to the Prince track back in February, according to ABC News. In June, she received an email from YouTube saying that her video had been removed at the request of Universal Music Publishing Group, and that she could have her YouTube account canceled in the event of any future copyright infringements.

In response to Universal's "takedown notice," Lenz filed a "counter-notice" and her video was restored six weeks later. For its part, YouTube told ABC that they are bound by provisions in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to honor all takedown and counter-notices.

In a statement released to ABC, Universal said, "Prince believes it is wrong for YouTube, or any user-generated site, to appropriate his music without his consent ... It's simply a matter of principle."

271. Really if she purchased the music or was listening to the radio there shouldn't be any issue because the royalities have already been paid out. Also he can't do any over a 30" piece of music it has to be 1 minute long before he can take any action.
I agree with everyobe else - Prince is a cry baby and the point was never about the music it was about the little boy dancing.

272. You'd think Prince would like some free publicity since he's nothing but a has-been cross dresser.

273. That is ridiculous! I love Prince but he is totally blowing this out of proportion.

274. I like how people here think that Prince isn't relevant anymore because they don't hear his new music on generic Top 40 radio. The guy is still a musical genius and he still sells out arenas. People's comments on here are acting like he's Boy George and hasn't done anything since the 80's. I'm still confused by this lawsuit. I don't understand why Universal is involved since Prince was with the label for like one release (I may be wrong) and has moved on to other distributors.

If Prince is involved with a lawsuit, I think it's a little ridiculous but people need to understand where this is coming from and far be it from TMZ.com, who report factual news items with their own twist like those people in the movie Mr. Deeds, to hand feed the public that information. It's much easier to do a headline about Prince not liking a baby dancing to Let's Go Crazy. The lawsuit isn't about a dancing baby video. It's about sites like YouTube profitting from use of copyrighted material without the artists' consent. And there is a point to that lawsuit.

275. copyright infringement? What a joke. This women did not steal his song, she did not make any money off it and not share the profit. She tried to have fun with her child who happens to like this song.

What is this world coming to, when you can't have a little fun with your kids, record it, post the video for people to see with out worrying about something like this. I was a prince fan, not so much anymore.

Prince, formerly known as an artist, gives us girls a bad name.

277. This is so stupid, you can barely hear the music let alone make out the words. What crawled up his ass and die..........................His Career!

278. I could not even hear the song. Man what they have people just check youtube for something that might or might not sound like his stupid song.

279. Once again... the basis of the lawsuit, whether Prince has anything to do with it or not, isn't the mother or the baby making money from use of the song. It's the website itself being built around copyrighted material and profiting as a result. Everyone is getting on Prince's case when neither Prince or Universal asked for the stupid baby video to be removed. YouTube probably removed it from fear of it being used in a lawsuit. The same reason they are removing footage from copyrighted network tv shows, copyrighted concert music videos, etc. TMZ.com sensationalized the story to make Prince out to be the heel and to entice a bunch of responses about Prince being washed up, a girlie man, mean, desperate for money, recognition, etc. because TMZ.com likes to piss off and annoy celebrities. Prince is probably more concerned about making and playing music than some baby video but the recording industry, movie industry, networks, etc. have a big problem with YouTube not monitoring who is posting what to their site.

280. And yes... people do get paid to check YouTube to police and report violations of copyright since YouTube themselves just make money and apparently don't police things. There have been examples of networks, studios and record labels and companies like World Wrestling Entertaiment specifically demanding that YouTube remove certain footage. Prince isn't sitting around checking YouTube to hear and see himself.

281. Prince should be grateful that someone is actually listening to the garbage he calls music. Personally I change the channel when I hear his new release, it's horrible! The baby is cute ... hopefully he'll learn to have an ear for "good" music as he grows older.

282. Hey, what ever happened to fair use? It's not like this money, or the adorable baby, is making any money off of Prince. Why can't we treat music as what it is: an integral part of our daily lives? Somebody should put together a legal defense fund and sue the pants off of Universal Music Group because they infringed on her right to fair use.

283. To everyone that is calling Prince garbage or talentless. I'd love to see your music collections and know what you consider good music. I mean, even if his music isn't your cup of tea, you have to be incredibly shortsighed to not see his talent. The man writes his own music, can play EVERY instrument, he can probably play lead guitar better than anyone making rock music today and entertain like no other. I doubt very much that anyone on the radio today will have his longevity and a back catalog like his. Sorry for the Prince BJ but I'm just amazed by how naive some people are. Please continue on with your insightful comments about Prince singing like a girl, wearing drag and not doing anything since the 80's all because you think he's attacking a baby's right to dance to his music on the Internet despite people pointing out countless times that this is about labels, publishers and copyright holders being ticked off at YouTube.

284. Also, for everyone giving Prince crap about this, has anyone even bothered to realize that Universal have launched their own version of YouTube at hulu.com with television and music under the Universal umbrella? Maybe that's the motivation behind their lawsuit and not evil Prince trying to shut down a dancing baby?

285. Jeeze, this is still attracting attention. We can't stand injustice. In the name of fair play, Prince should send all of us some compensation for upsetting us like this. Here we expected so much more from him. Remember how he pranced around with his little legs, shaking his little skinny butt. And, that pout .....such a cute little pout. Now, he's picking on a baby and mommy. What a shocker.
