Prince, Record Label Go Crazy over Dancing Baby

In the battle between record companies and Internet users over copyright issues, an 18-month-old baby dancing to Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" finds himself smack in the middle.

Stephanie Lenz posted a 29-second video clip of her son dancing to the Prince track back in February, according to ABC News. In June, she received an email from YouTube saying that her video had been removed at the request of Universal Music Publishing Group, and that she could have her YouTube account canceled in the event of any future copyright infringements.

In response to Universal's "takedown notice," Lenz filed a "counter-notice" and her video was restored six weeks later. For its part, YouTube told ABC that they are bound by provisions in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to honor all takedown and counter-notices.

In a statement released to ABC, Universal said, "Prince believes it is wrong for YouTube, or any user-generated site, to appropriate his music without his consent ... It's simply a matter of principle."

17. I can understand if the person was posting a released video, but that mother already purchased the music, and was enjoying it by having her child dance on the video. Prince has gone over the top.

23. Maybe I'm going deaf, but I could hardly make out the song. She could have been playing chopsticks, I wasn't listening to the music, I was watching the baby.

Business must be slow for Prince if that's all he has to worry about.

24. Before you know it, they will be asking all the people who post Youtube videos singing other artists songs to take it down.

To poster #6, then everyone on youtube who posts a video dancing, singing, or performing to someone else's song is breaking Youtube policy.

My goodness, so many uptight people! The music was already purchased, and it wasn't like the mother was trying to sell anything off of the baby dancing to the song.

Get over it!

25. this is so silly its not even funny. prince or any other celeb should be thankful for all that they have and not be greedy and want more. this is a small child having fun and his mom recording it. i used to be a fan of his but over the past few yrs due to his ignorance i am no longer a fan. i agree with some of the celebs on the whole music stealing issue. how many singers or groups from the 80's would be proud that the music they make is even still being played? everyone faces a time in their life that they have to GROW UP. prince your time has long past that point. so grow up and maybe someone might buy your next album if your even good enough to produce 1. you are an ungrateful, self centered, selfish human being. to bad you have to pick on an 18 month old child dancing to your music, just to get a headline anymore. you are pathetic and nothing more than a joke to the whole world.

26. I'm a lawyer. It's a legal issue. You can't marry intellectual property you don't own to a video or film you create. You're technically stealing the material. The statutory damages are in excess of $100,000 per infringement, so you'd better think twice before you rationalize using something that isn't yours. You have a right to make an archival copy of the music for yourself, you have a right to create a parody of it, you have a right to use it for educational purposes. Outside of that, you have to pay.

27. Give the people a break! GREED. Prince is a real bitch. What is her problem? No record sales? Is Prince going to sue Barney for being purple next?

28. Yet another mother who thinks their kid is just adorable, so post it to the world! Why can't this just be shared with her family and friends? Like it or not, there are laws and we must abide by them. Prince is not the culprit, this woman is. I mean who does this?
She may be trying to get the "18 month old" a TV/Movie contract....way to go, lady, sell
your kid already.

29. Isn't the point of music is having people hear it? It's a twenty year old song by a has-been....he should be glad someone played it.

30. What I'm failing to understand here is exactly what Prince and Universal is afraid of, regarding this clip. Are they afraid that we'll sit and listen to it on repeat instead of legally buying the entire song or album? A 29 second clip featuring jumbled background music does not an illegal download make. And props to the woman who didn't allow herself to be pushed around by a disillusioned multi-billion dollar company.
