Prince, Record Label Go Crazy over Dancing Baby

In the battle between record companies and Internet users over copyright issues, an 18-month-old baby dancing to Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" finds himself smack in the middle.

Stephanie Lenz posted a 29-second video clip of her son dancing to the Prince track back in February, according to ABC News. In June, she received an email from YouTube saying that her video had been removed at the request of Universal Music Publishing Group, and that she could have her YouTube account canceled in the event of any future copyright infringements.

In response to Universal's "takedown notice," Lenz filed a "counter-notice" and her video was restored six weeks later. For its part, YouTube told ABC that they are bound by provisions in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to honor all takedown and counter-notices.

In a statement released to ABC, Universal said, "Prince believes it is wrong for YouTube, or any user-generated site, to appropriate his music without his consent ... It's simply a matter of principle."

62. Yep, stupidity courtesy of ASCAP type tactics. Cant even listen to popular music in a public place without those Nazi losers ruining it

64. Pft! How absurd! How it is "copyright infrigement" to have music playing in a video you're not even trying to make money off of? Last time I looked just about every video on Your Tube had someone else's music playing in the background that they didn't have official "permission" to use. I guess Prince just picked the ONE video playing anything of his merely to get his name in print? Cause he isn't in the news for much else lately....

65. I saw this story on a morning show yesterday. They said the music playing in the background was from the Super Bowl halftime show. The mother wasn't even playing it from a CD. And she posted the video to share with her family and friends. I understand the legal aspects but where do you draw the line?

66. I work in music publishing and these are my two cents:

ASCAP/BMI should be the ones involved here, not Universal publishing. YouTube is liable, not the mother who posted the video.

Why?

ASCAP/BMI are the ones that collect writer royalties from broadcast companies from radio and TV stations. Like radio and TV stations, YouTube makes money from the advertising.

The mom is not making money off of Prince's work, YouTUbe is.

ASCAP/BMI should be monitoring and/or suing YouTube for the broadcast of copywritten works, because ultimately YouTube makes money off of the people that post stuff on YouTube. Plain and simple.

73. Prince, you are a nice person. Just give the family permission to show their
baby dancing to your song. This is an innocent, cute, dancing baby. They
were at least listening to your song, that should be flattering. I understand your
principle but a baby dancing to your music is also cool.

75. SInce when is it bad to video tape your child having fun in your own home listening to your own music? What a bitch society we live in. Don't put you music out there for people to buy if you don't want them listening to it, you little purple man. Oh and it was about the cute kid not that old song.
