Report: Grand Jury Investigates Copperfield Allegations

David CopperfieldA federal grand jury in Seattle is investigating allegations of a local woman who claims she was raped, assaulted and threatened by magician David Copperfield at his private island in the Bahamas in July, the Seattle Times is reporting.

The paper reports that the woman told law enforcement that she was approached by a member of Copperfield's entourage at his show in January, directed to special seats, and then selected to come onstage as part of the act. As TMZ reported this week, Copperfield used his show and his handlers to pickup women, with the Bahamas often mentioned as a possible vacation spot.

Sources told the Times that the woman told investigators the magician promised her he could help with her aspiring modeling career, and invited her to his isolated $50 million private island in the Bahamas. From nearby Nassau, the retreat is accessible only by chartered plane and private boat.

The alleged victim also told investigators that she was told there would be other guests on the island -- but there weren't. The Times says she made the trip in July and has told Seattle police and the FBI that Copperfield raped and struck her during her two-day stay on the island.

No indictments or criminal charges have been filed at this time. David Copperfield's lawyer, David Chesnoff, maintains his client's innocence, saying, "The allegation is 100 percent false, and we deny it in the strongest possible terms."

16. #14 I agree with your point! What role does the media play in disclosing identities of any party before charges are filed? Should TMZ or others have printed this story with Copperfield's identity as being accused before any charges were filed?

17. None of us know the details to determine guilt or innocence. There's only speculation at this point by people on this site. What I find alarming is the lack of reasoning and the types of adjectives being used to describe people. Let's remove this from the incident at hand and say that Jane Doe is raped by Tom Guy and goes to the police and files a report. The media gets wind of this and prints the allegation against Tom Guy. No one knows what the evidence shows. Why would anyone immediately describe Jane Doe as a "bimbo", "hoe-bag", "extortionist", "stupid", "gold digger", "slut", "whore", "she was asking for it", "why was she even with him?", etc. Why do people immediately describe the woman in this way? If you were raped, would you want to be described like this by people who don't even know you or the situation? If your mother, sister, or daughter were raped would you want people automatically assigning these terms to them without knowing them or the situation? If a man is physically assaulted would he automatically be described with these terms? Let's let the legal process run its course and stop speculating. And let's not automatically ascribe horrid terms to either party in this case.

18. This is the first time anything has ever surfaced about copperfield. he could have any women he wants....why would have to rape this chick? It's nothing more than a shakedown.

19. The Enquirer has a more detailed article. The girl had the presence of mind to photograph the crime scene with her camera. He would only let her leave on a plane out of the country. She went straight from the airport to the hospital for a rape exam. She did not shower, to preserve evidience. I BELIEVE SHE'S GOING TO GET THIS CREEP CONVICTED. Good for her!

20. I hold her responsible for what happened. She is 21, not 12, and unless she is mentally retarded, she knows EXACTLY what a 51 year old man wants from a 21 year old woman. (Hint: it's not her brilliant mind or scintillating conversation.)

She made the choice to offer it up when she got on the plane. You can't blame him for following through.

I know some silly women think they can do anything they want with no consequences but that's not how the world works.

You want to be treated like a grown-up? Act like one.

21. "Read the article more closely. It says she was told he would help with her career. It says she was told other guests would also be there."

Oh pulleeeeze. He was willing to help a complete stranger with her career because........?

And she blindly accepted the "other guests" story without asking who said guests would be?

And now she's whining about being a victim?

Again, ladies, no more whining, no more excuses. It's time to engage your brains and USE THEM.

22. She has stated she was given the impression others would be on the island, That there was a party there, Other guests there. No one has enough facts really to make any call yet either way.

Again as per the article's the woman did not know she going to a isolated island alone with him although it fits a argument for those who want to stand by David.

I have to say though I'm not going to throw this woman under the bus just yet as some have done.
Nor publicly convict a guy of rape.

My only guess is that woman in Seattle is young.

Davids Rep has not been "impeccable". Even so that would not mean he did not force himself on someone. Your post is very clearly discounting the possibility that this may have happened, instead "chicks are willing", not preyed upon for possible short relationships with David.
Not saying he is guilty of rape but lets be real about how he goes about meeting these "girls"

23. The FBI set up a sting, sent the girl back to meet him in Las Vegas, where he offered her 2 million to keep her mouth shut. She refused, they got all that on tape. He's DONE.

You should not ask others to use their brains when you are lacking the ability to even own one. Evolve for Gods sake.
Your patronizing, arrogant and all so sure you have the solution's here.

25. "My only guess is that woman in Seattle is young."

She's 21. That's MORE than old enough to know better.

I am not a David supporter at all. I think he is overrated and kinda icky BUT I also do not support voluntary stupidity in women. She knew EXACTLY what he wanted but she got on the plane anyway because she thought it would be sweet and romantic when she spread her legs like a cheap slag.

You can't scream "EQUAL RIGHTS" out of one side of your mouth and "I'M A VICTIM AND IT'S ALL HIS FAULT" out of the other.

It just doesn't work, ladies!

26. It IS the solution, sweetie. It works just fine for the women who choose to follow their brain instead of their silly little schoolgirl crushes and their feeeeeeeelings.

I realize that some women choose to be victims because they are lazy and think life will be easier that way BUT no one can make you a doormat unless you voluntarily lay down in front of the door.

I've never been date raped. None of my female relatives have been date raped. None of my female friends have been date raped.

Yes, I have been asked out by smarmy men with vague stories of wonderful things. Guess what? I DIDN'T GO.

See what happens when you use your brain? Life is good on the smart side.

28. The guy is a public figure, The news began swirling when his storage/apartment complex was raided by the Feds. Would have been hard to keep that out the news.
There are many employees also that were in the know and any one could have talked. To say his name should not have been released in this matter is being extremely naive.
The accuser herself is under no court order to not talk. There are many ways this woud/could have been released to the public.Just as in our smaller world this news if about us would have been out in places we would rather it not be, It's impact would be the same.
I beleive some are sugjesting celebritys should have special laws written for them, Because the news goes further?

29. There sure are A LOT of comments on here accusing the victim of crying wolf! So sad, you people should educate yourselves before pounding on your keyboards! I live in the Seattle area and this has hit the local news for days upon days. This story on TMZ doesn't even scratch the surface of the whole story. He tried to buy her silence with 2 million dollars (an admission of guilt?). There was a whole sting operation with the FBI and local authorities and that is what they found in is storage along with computer profiles of other women he may have victimized. Shame on those who judge so quickly! That is what a courtroom is for!

30. "There was a whole sting operation with the FBI and local authorities and that is what they found in is storage along with computer profiles of other women he may have victimized."

All the profiled women CHOSE to answer those dumb questions. That's WHY he has the profiles. If you choose to be stupid, someone will take advantage of you eventually.

If a stranger comes up to you and asks what men's cologne you prefer, it should be a red flag, ladies. Unless you are blinded by money. In which case, you should be kept home by your parents (yes, even at 21) until you decide to engage your brain before leaving the house.

"Shame on those who judge so quickly!"

You silly, silly woman. I trust you've added your own name to that list?

Life is still better over here!
