Report: Grand Jury Investigates Copperfield Allegations

David CopperfieldA federal grand jury in Seattle is investigating allegations of a local woman who claims she was raped, assaulted and threatened by magician David Copperfield at his private island in the Bahamas in July, the Seattle Times is reporting.

The paper reports that the woman told law enforcement that she was approached by a member of Copperfield's entourage at his show in January, directed to special seats, and then selected to come onstage as part of the act. As TMZ reported this week, Copperfield used his show and his handlers to pickup women, with the Bahamas often mentioned as a possible vacation spot.

Sources told the Times that the woman told investigators the magician promised her he could help with her aspiring modeling career, and invited her to his isolated $50 million private island in the Bahamas. From nearby Nassau, the retreat is accessible only by chartered plane and private boat.

The alleged victim also told investigators that she was told there would be other guests on the island -- but there weren't. The Times says she made the trip in July and has told Seattle police and the FBI that Copperfield raped and struck her during her two-day stay on the island.

No indictments or criminal charges have been filed at this time. David Copperfield's lawyer, David Chesnoff, maintains his client's innocence, saying, "The allegation is 100 percent false, and we deny it in the strongest possible terms."

31. Right on JD. This accuser is VERY believable, there is coroborating evidence, etc.

32. I am not totally surprised by this allegation. During our spring break of this year, our family traveled to Las Vegas and watched the David Copperfield Show at the MGM Grand. My 15 yr. old daughter was selected from the audience to be a part of David's act. We were informed during the show by David's staff that my daughter would be invited backstage after the show to meet David. We also were invited to stay and take pictures with David after the show. While I thought that this was all a kind gesture on the part of Mr. Copperfield, my daughter told me that she was given a survey backstage to fill out so that she could be a part of David's future shows if he ever toured our area. (She, being a 15 year old, was very excited about the prospect of being employed as part of a magic act!) My daughter said that the survey consisted of question like "What is your favorite place to vacation?", "What is your favorite men's cologne?", and "What kind of flowers do you like?" My daughter was also given Mr. Copperfield's personal card with his personal email and phone number. In addition, she was given a personalized autographed picture of David. While backstage, my daughter was photographed alone and with David, but we were not given the photographs. Although we never heard from him again after that, it all seems more suspicious in light of these current allegations.

34. Allegedly, he had his employees, prior to each show, pick out woman they thought he would find attractive, they then photographed and questioned them, under the pretense of the ladies thinking they might be selected to participate in one of his shows should be perform in their hometown, then, would contact them as he allegedly did the female from WA. According to a Seattle newspaper, she was told there would be others on the island while she was there.

It sounds to me, the FBI took their time and set up a sting. It is strange a Seattle newspaper is quoted Copperfield offered the female 2 million and 2 million was located in his warehouse in a safe according to reports. If it is correct reporting, investigators retrieved his camera card and various computers, I believe they might hold the proof of communications between Copperfield and the female possibly stating the offer of the money for her to remain quiet. Just my opinion of why they took the computers and camera card, did they possibly hold the pix of the women from each show - to show a pattern and credibility to her accuzations?

If he is guilty or innocent, his tacky and tasteless fast food way of meeting woman has been exposed and I do not think even King David can make this one go away...

35. To Mom of teen: PLEASE take that information to the FBI. It says everything about Copperfield's modus operandi.

36. Mom of Teen, ummm, hello? It's YOUR job to supervise your 15 year old. It's called BEING A PARENT.

Celebrity or not, no 51 year old, creepy man would ever get that close to my teenage daughter. He'd have to go through me and her father first.

If your story is true, and it really went that far, it's ENTIRELY YOUR FAULT for not doing your job as a mother.

Shame on you!

P.S. When you respond to your own posts with a different name, it's best to post the response AFTER the original post. Otherwise people will doubt the veracity of your story, and with good reason.

37.
No judgment here either way yet but...
If you need a magic man to help you with your modeling career it's time to re-think your career path?

I do think the way he preys on these young girls kind of sleazy,This girl was just 21 years old! But he is not original in his methods by far. And his low rent pick up tactics dont make him a rapist.

Just placed him above that for some reason, maybe because it's a family type event not a rock concert.
He gave her family and her "special " seats!
Not many would turn that down, And to be used in the act is special too. Sleazy dude, You kinda lead yourself to this.

Use your brain.....
Your now entering paranoia, That happens to idiots who cant let go of a invalid argument. Your knuckles must be bleeding all over the keyboard chimp.

39. Then help with my paranoia, Lydia aka Mom of Teen aka opi. Please tell me you're not REALLY raising any children. PLEASE.

My so called "invalid argument" has kept me out of stupid situations thus far so it seems to me it IS working. The men in my life respect me and honor me. My children are not dolts who are swayed by bright lights. Can you say the same? I bet you 100 bucks you can't!

P.S. If you don't see the humor in responding to your own comment, but forgetting which comment to activate first, you lack more than just brains.

40. I suspect this woman is using these allegations as a way of extorting money from a very wealthy man. What did she think would happen if she went to his private island? Surely she is not that stupid. She probably used his semen from a consensual encounter to "prove" rape. I seriously doubt he will be indicted but, if he is, I cannot imagine he will be convicted.

41. Copperfield is doing the same things rock stars do, except they usually aren't dumb enough to have them fill out a questionnaire, LOL. They have roadies who seek out scantily-dressed women in the audience to give them a backstage pass, and they also have secret signals for those roadies to let them know which women they're interested in from the audience. It's very common, and Copperfield is hardly the only one who does it. Those women know what these men want, and it's definitely not their intelligence since these men don't even know them.

There is something called "personal responsibility", which dictates that no person should go to a foreign country with someone they don't even know. If they do that, and something bad happens, how much responsibility does the woman bear for failing to use their common sense? After all, it is not unreasonable that a man would assume the woman wanted the same thing he wants, if she would do that. This woman is 21, hardly a child, and should definitely have known better. It is also not uncommon for women to claim that male celebrities raped them, even when it's not true, in order to either gain money or revenge. I'm not saying that's what this woman did, but I also wouldn't rule it out given that it's really not uncommon.

So unless I hear about some actual evidence of rape, I'm inclined to give Copperfield the benefit of the doubt, especially given that there have been no previous criminal complaints against him. Utilizing sleazy pickup tactics certainly doesn't mean that the man is a rapist, and even celebrities are innocent until proven guilty in this country, despite what TMZ might think.

42. To Number 44 you said

There is something called "personal responsibility", which dictates that no person should go to a foreign country with someone they don't even know. If they do that, and something bad happens, how much responsibility does the woman bear for failing to use their common sense?

...are you serious...so if I live by your comment then if I can convince a woman to go someplace secluded with me even though she doesn't know me; then its ok to rape her? She was asking for it right? Its people like you that make these women not want to come forward...they think people will think like you.

So if a woman is invited anyplace for vacation by a man then she is expected to do things for him.......and if she doesnt then rape is justified because she should have known what he wanted?!?!?! Last i knew women had the right to say no in any situation

43. Ok this guy may be weird but even if some unknown celeb stranger is taking me to a private island where other people are supposed to be, my a$$ aint going without a friend. Nothing is free, my opinion she knew what she was doing and when no help with career came and no flowers afterward these allegations came. we have all done things we regret but rape it does not make... There was way too much time between the allegations and when it happened for anyone to know unless he made a video of it... Just like @ Duke, this only hurts the accusers and the next girl that is too scard to come forward.
