As to FYI, perhaps a remedial lesson in history is in order. Osama Bin Laden only came to power because of US support of the Mujhadien against the Soviets. Without western support the Taliban would never have splintered off from the Mujhadien and taken control of Afghanistan.
This failure of foriegn policy is echoed in the US support of the Ba'ath party military coupe against Abd al-Karim Qasim.

Hegemon has a point; we SHOULD know our history. President CARTER was in power in the beginning of the Soviet-Afgan war, then Regan.
However, we were wrapped up in the "Cold War" AGAINST THE SOVIETS, who were an actual threat to our country, and the Mujhadeen were not our problem, nor were they a major military threat to us at the time.
This is also the time when Iranians were kidnapping US military and government workers, the Shah of Iran was forced into exile and the Ayatollah Khomeini, who heads a Islamic Fundamentalist government in Iran, took over power.

I'm a native Atlantan (escaped 10 years ago) and I can tell you that most every move that Carter made politically or regarding foreign policy was a mistake, ie: GIVING the Panama Canal away! I think that he is extremely intelligent and probably one of the finest human beings on this planet but his presidency will rank as one of the absolute failures of the last 231 years. And he continues to make poor decisions daily ...

Just as a FYI side note, George Bush Sr. was our Vice President of the United States for 8 years along side Regan (RIP).
I'm always shocked at people who don't remember this or know this! The late 80's were a hard time for the entire world, not just the US. Presidents can't be blamed for everything!

it's a Halloween costume fer chrissakes....! ANYONE can be ANYTHING they want on this day...i was gonna say i bet there's some guy in Iran wearing a George Bush mask, but they don't have Halloween out there, do they...? :)
anyway--i think it's a funny costume. the poor guy tryin' to wear it was assaulted and that's not cool....
