Rev. Al to Dog Chapman -- March With Me!

TMZ has obtained a letter that Reverend Al Sharpton has sent to Duane "Dog" Chapman, after Dog contacted him yesterday. Here's the full text:

Dear Mr. Chapman:

I received your call while on the road promoting a March I am leading on the United States Justice Department on November 16th in Washington, DC, against hate crimes and racial attacks around the country. The revelation of your conversation came at a time that is most frightening to a lot of people because we are in a state of crisis with the proliferation of racial attacks, hate crimes, and bias incidents in the United States and abroad. In fact, Abraham H. Foxman, the Executive Director of the Anti-Defamation League and I released an unprecedented joint statement today because of this climate. Even more concerning to me though is that the Justice Department and the federal government have failed to intervene in cases all over the country of racial bigotry and hate which is the reason we are having our march on Nov. 16th in front of the Justice Department.

As a minister I would be inclined to meet with you despite the racist and grotesque things I heard you say, but I am not willing to rearrange my schedule around the country building up for this march to do so. If you wish to meet with me somewhere on the road that is fine, but be assured that I will not sanitize the kind of hate language that leads to the hate action that has left so many people vulnerable in America today. The company that airs the show has the right to take steps by any means when there is a public display of a character of bigotry. We did not call on your company's action but we will not call against your company's action, because what was said in private is now public, and they have a right to deal with their public perception.

If you are sincere that this does not reflect you, you should not only meet with us, but you should march with us on November 16th and call on the government of the United States to protect people, that unlike you don't have publicist, don't have lawyers, and don't have any protection. They used to have the protection of the United States government.

In Progress,
Reverend Al Sharpton
President of National Action Network

17. Mr. Chapman - you don't have to apologize to anyone and no walking with Al Sharpton.
It was a private conversation between father and son - case closed - no apologizing to anyone. This being intimidated into saying something anyone doesn't believe in has to stop - politically correct my foot. It was a private conversation Dog was having with his son.
Bottom line - case closed. Tell Sharpton to walk by himself.

18. "Dog" sounds no different that 75% of America. Only differance is his son (Tucker) turned over the tapes for for public consumption, revenge.
I've heard church loving people say worse when another priest get caught diddling little boys.

19. Dog I will support you in full up to the day you march with Al Sharpton. Believe it or not we do not have to get his approval before we speak in America. This is still America but everyday it is more and more turning in to the "United State of the Offended." Tell Al Sharpton to kiss your ass and go on.

20. THIS IS FOR THE IDIOTS WHO POSTED IN DUANE "DOG" CHAPMAN'S NAME ON THIS MESSAGE BOARD: YOU ARE PATHETIC. Does it seem right that you would be so pathetically, miserable in your own life that you need to try and bring down another person by pretending to be him? Do you feel better? I feel very sorry for you and your family. It must be hard to live such a trying and worthless life that you fire cheap and infantile remarks on a message board.THIS IS TO THE CAHPMAN FAMILY: I BELIEVE IN YOU DOG. I am in recovery, and watching your show and beleiving that everyone deserves a 2nd chance if not a third, helped me to stay on track since MARCH 18th, 2005. THANK

21. Did you listen to the entire (long version) of the tape? In it he explains that he doesn't mean that he hates blacks or believes they are inferior, he just didn't want anyone to misunderstand and think that the use of that word in their family represented a racial slur. He went on to say that the word was sometimes used, but not in a derogatory manner. We DO have freedom of speech in this country.

What REALLY bothers me about this entire thing is that he was having an actual live conversation with his son over the phone and the son was taping it and then sold it to the National Enquirer. I thought that taping someone without their knowledge was illegal. Why aren't we concerned about that? What Duane said wasn't illegal. What his son did was.

But that's just my opinion....

22. he doesn't owe anyone any apology for something said in private. his son and that magazine should apologize for starting trouble and ruining this man's career. Al Sharpton is in no position to judge. He's not God and he should quit acting like he is the ruling authority on all things racist. He's just as bad.

23. You making hateful comments about his family is just as bad as the comments he made. Everyone wants to be the first to throw stones... but I think everyone needs to take a good look at themselves before they do.

24. DOG, you are not a bad person as the media has set out to make you to be. I watch your show and I have also read your book, and i honestly believe in my heart that this mistake was just that...A MISTAKE. TO TMZ READERS: SWITCH ROLES and imagine that you just had a talk with your son over his choice of girls. If you disliked something the person has doe (AS DOG CLEARLY DID) than youhave the right, if not tHE DUTY, to tell your son, how you feel. I have heARD THE ENTIRE TAPE, this witchhunt must end...Ryan

27. This is so ridiculous. Now Rev Sharpton has something else to go on and on and on and on about and get his face all over tv. I think "Dog" just contacted him because he is freaking out over possibly losing that idiotic show and his money with it. He should NEVER have opened his big mouth (although I am not surprised) with those words - you think he would have had a LITTLE more sense. And his son should be totally kicked out of that family for what he did to her father. After all, it WAS a private conversation between father and son. I dont even watch the show - he and his wife remind me of a bunch of aging has-beens who think they are tough and going to catch all the "bad guys" in the world. Looks like HE is the bad guy now! Goodbye show and goodbye fans!

28. Dog Chapman is the best!!!! People should just mind their own business. He had a private conversation with his own son, that should have stayed between them. If private conversations are now public then I would love to hear the conversations of all of the black supporters how they call each other racial slurs. i say BACK OFF!!!

30. Dog is white trash what did you really expect. This is how white people talk when black people are not around so the next time you see one smiling in your face remember the cannot be trusted.

Dog has every right to say what he wants and he should not apoligize for something you meant. If thats how you feel thats how you feel.
