Copperfield Says He's an Extortion Victim

CopperfieldDavid Copperfield's reps have just issued a statement to TMZ, claiming the documents we posted yesterday were the subject of an extortion attempt against the magician.

The document -- titled "Show Participation" -- outlines intricate steps Copperfield's assistants are required to follow in order to help David meet attractive women at his shows. The women are told about David's islands in the Bahamas and prospects for employment.

David Chesnoff, Copperfield's lawyer, issued a statement to TMZ: "Recently, Mr. Copperfield was the victim of an unsuccessful extortion attempt by a disgruntled former employee. We believe these documents are a smear campaign which is a product of that unsuccessful shakedown effort."

Chesnoff goes on, "The distorted and twisted claim that these meet and greets were designed as a dating service for Mr. Copperfield is ridiculous. In fact, thousands of audience participants were greeted in this fashion."

A Seattle woman claims she was in the audience when David met her backstage, invited her to the Bahamas and then allegedly raped her. Copperfield denies any wrongdoing. Chesnoff also told TMZ, "The innuendo that voluntary meetings with audience members has anything to do with forced, non-consensual activity is both untrue and unfair."

Check out the segment on the "Show Participation" document from last night's TMZ TV.

16. Hmmm. An ex-employee is out to get him. The woman in the Bahamas is out to get him. The women who have come forward about their strange meetings backstage are out to get him. All at the same time too. How about that!! Does his lawyer think people are stupid?

17. I know one of David's ex-girlfriends. She is a totally stand-up gal and although their relationship didn't work out, she has never had anything bad to say about him or his family.

19. Your own island is so much better than having a frickin amusement park for little boys. David Copperfield is brilliant and I'm so jealous.

24. Lawyers have a saying: When the facts aren't on your side, throw up smoke screens (distractions). Talk about anything but the facts. And so the "Great Illusionist" is trying to convince us that the facts are simply that (an Illusion). Too bad he's not a magician, he might just stand a chance (NOT!)...Thank you...

26. David doesnt have to rape someone. This is so ridiculous. Probably consensual and when it turned out to be a one night stand someone cried rape. He can get it from most any single (or not) woman so why would he need to force it?

29. This guy owns an island and nearly married Claudia Schiffer. It doesn't seem like he needs to worry about the Blond Flakes in the front row. I think these girls want more than tips on how to make a pigeon disappear. They're gold diggers! The bizarre part is people actually believe this story.

30. Grammarian #2: You must mean "Gramma," instead. All I see for this post is, "titled," once, as it's supposed to be spelled. Maybe you need your glasses Gramma, or is the smoke in the air clouding your vision.
