Copperfield Says He's an Extortion Victim

CopperfieldDavid Copperfield's reps have just issued a statement to TMZ, claiming the documents we posted yesterday were the subject of an extortion attempt against the magician.

The document -- titled "Show Participation" -- outlines intricate steps Copperfield's assistants are required to follow in order to help David meet attractive women at his shows. The women are told about David's islands in the Bahamas and prospects for employment.

David Chesnoff, Copperfield's lawyer, issued a statement to TMZ: "Recently, Mr. Copperfield was the victim of an unsuccessful extortion attempt by a disgruntled former employee. We believe these documents are a smear campaign which is a product of that unsuccessful shakedown effort."

Chesnoff goes on, "The distorted and twisted claim that these meet and greets were designed as a dating service for Mr. Copperfield is ridiculous. In fact, thousands of audience participants were greeted in this fashion."

A Seattle woman claims she was in the audience when David met her backstage, invited her to the Bahamas and then allegedly raped her. Copperfield denies any wrongdoing. Chesnoff also told TMZ, "The innuendo that voluntary meetings with audience members has anything to do with forced, non-consensual activity is both untrue and unfair."

Check out the segment on the "Show Participation" document from last night's TMZ TV.

62. I seriously doubt Copperfield would rape someone. He had women throwing themseleves at him daily. So he took a homely girl to his island and she put out, only to come and find out he had other girls on the side. Boo hoo get over it and find another meal ticket sweet heart. What did she expect, a nice vacation for nothing. Get an education and quit expecting a man to take care of your sorry ass. I think if you reversed this whole thing she'd expect something in return.

63. It's time to ramp up the oldest excuse in the world....A DISGRUNTLED EMPLOYEE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS. Poor me....I am being blackmailed...boo hoo....Get a life David, as a celebrity you know what is going to cause you a problem and this PROCEDURE is just ripe for allegations.

64. I have been following this story and with all the code words like "scorpions" "specials" and the forms being filled out and the pictures being taken and all the talk about his islands... It really does seem predatory to me. I'm sure he has woman throwing themselves at him all the time, but this sounds like a cat and mouse game HE wants to control. I don't know if he's capable of rape, let the courts decide that one, but this whole thing...just creeps me out!

I think we will learn more soon and it will probably get even creepier.

65. OK, so he sounds sleazy, but how is this different from what rock stars have been doing for 50 years.

66. Oh, so now HE'S the victim??? That gets me right in the gag reflex.

67. What a sleeze bag! He and Rosie would make a great pair delivering 'news' on MSNBC! Just try to imagine that. Who knows, he might make Rosie disappear!!!!

68. This is TRUE. I have been to 2 of his shows and it's so obvious he scouts the audience for pretty women. At the end of his show he was available to sign autographs. You had to go through rope stiles to get to him. His attention was not on unattractive woman who were getting his autograph but his eyes constantly scanned who was in line waiting for their chance to talk to him.

He is GUILTY AS CHARGED. He's going down, and going down fast!

One other thing, I took a picture of him before he started his magic act, the specify no cameras allowed but I took my chance. We were seated up front at the Taj in Atlantic City, and he shot me an evil glare. Security came running to the front to find out who took a picture so they could confiscate the camera. He glared at me, but did not turn me in. He has such an evil side to him, because if looks could kill, I'd be dead!

69. I don't buy any of this. I think these Bitches are just trying to get some $$$$$$ and their 15 mins of fame. Even if he did use this method to pick up chicks, they should be smart enough to figure out he wants a little action if he invites you to his island. So what, I'd do him in a minute,

70. UMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, Didnt Michael Jackson say the same thing...........They both are creeps and will use any form of excuse to play innocent. Michael Jackson , OJ Simpson, David Copperfield are the biggest creeps in LaLa Land, and why give these creeps the time of day...I say put these three in the same jail cell and let these lying diviants rot, like the RATS they are.

71. I've noticed that Copperfield does SCOPE the audience for attractive women but did anyone ever think that maybe thats part of the magic? Chances are if you have a hottie in a mini-skirt and high heels on stage or at least if she's pretty enough, most likely the audience is paying attention to the hottie and not so much the magician while he performs a trick. Magic is about distortion, time, and the eyes.....and of course, it is showbiz and anything is possible to happen backstage, but if someone asked me to go to an island and I didn't know him personally Copperfield or a nobody, I would never go. She obviously knew what she was getting herself into. Any man inviting a woman back to his place an island or apartment, is obviously after one thing. She is probably pissed off cause he only wanted her for sex (one night stand).

Yeah! You SHOULD be dead. Who are you to not follow rules??
There's a reason when you go to THEATER...you're not supposed to use flash cameras.
They're DISTRACTING to the performer on stage, DIMWIT!
But I guess...you're to smart and clever to have respect for someone performing on stage. Hope you put the photo in your memory book, jerkoff!

73. Bait and switch. Copperfield is now a victim. Smoke and mirrors, something he's good at, amongst other alleged things. He said/she said. Time plus other women he's had down there will out with some form of ascertainable truth, hopefully.

74. When I was 25, I was at a Copperfield show in Austin. He absolutely checked me out w/binnoculars as he was "scanning the crowd" & saying something about being in Austin. I don't really remember. Later in the show one of his crew climbs over a whole row of people & tells me I'm selected to be in his next trick. So, I went with them & on stage to "help" w/ a silly rope trick. After the show, same guy comes over & says they need me to come back stage fill out some papers & meet David. I said no thanks. I thought it was weird. Then David comes out in the lobby & tells me how "great" I was...I blew him off. I was thinking the same thing some of the posters have said--Why would a famous magician be trying to pick up on girls 1/2 his age? Unless he had an agenda? I feel very lucky that I have better judgement than to be star struck into a bad situation.

Another point to whoever said Copperfield can sleep w/any woman he wants & these girls are just gold diggers...Rape is not sex. It is an act of violence. What better victim than a young possibly naive person getting unexpected attention from a "star"?

You know something, you need to get a life and some good therapy. You have an anger problem. I would never ever diss someone who is simply stating what happened. AND if you think I am the only person who ever took a picture of a celebrity where cameras were not allowed in your opinion we'd all be dead eh? I took the picture while he was talking to the audience, hence, not during his performance.

For you to wish someone dead, is pathetic. I feel sorry for you, consumed with so much rage over someone voicing an opinion in a fashion that I would never ever slam anyone for something like this. Please Miss/Mr honest person, I harbor no grudge against you, but I do hope you seek professional help. God Bless.
