Oprah, NBC, Discovery -- What's the Deal with the Dr.?

The doctor who performed surgery on Kanye West's mother was booked on some big TV shows, but it appears none of the producers knew about his malpractice suits, allegations of sexual battery and physical assault, DUI convictions and pending disciplinary action before the Medical Board of California.

It took TMZ three hours to turn up the goods on Dr. Adams. So why were Oprah, Discovery Health, NBC and others in the dark? We asked for comment. Watch the piece that aired tonight on TMZ TV and judge for yourself.

106. For all of you who think Oprah is a racist: A majority of her producers are white! Please stop projecting your own hate onto Oprah!!

108. People please! Oprah Winfrey has over 400 employees; Produces over 200 shows a season, runs a magazine, runs three charitable organizations, produces movies and more in a day than most in a year. Do you think it is possible that she or her staff would not miss one or two shady people.

Even though her producer were supposed to check the guest I can't even fully blame them. They booked this doctor on the show after he had already been viewed as credible by others. Do the producers of the Oprah show need to run FBI checks on all of her guest now. Everyone who is anybody or wants to be anybody tries to get on the Oprah Show. A few a decade will slip through. I wish other large organizations like the FDA, FAA and EPA had as good a record as the Harpo team. But then again what's more important a talk show or our food supply, weapons screening in airports and clean air?

The pattern I notice is that in each case that Oprah is blamed, she is supposed to be responsible for someone else's misbehavior. Notice NONE of the recent scandals involve HER misbehavior. And as for as the school dorm lady she passed both a criminal and civil background check before the incident.

I now understand that Oprah will have her staff at the school go through a new very tough screening and monitoring process. That will of course bring new charges that she is too controlling.

This tragedy is the Dr.'s fault for not being accredited and never becoming the professional he pretended to be. Oprah is not reasonable for what every guest ever does in their life.

109. A Fan (post #112): You are so right which is why I'm not going to argue with folks in here. But I saw a really great post by someone who did her research on the matter. I am reposting in below: (Oh, sailorgirl, you should read below too)

96. Dr. Adams appeared on Oprah BEFORE nearly every event being reported occurred. His Oprah appearance took place in November 2003. By contrast, the medical practice suits occurred as follows:
Rhonda McLain - October 2007
Teana Lucas - November 2004
Jana Beighle - August 2005
Bonita Hovey - December 2004
Terry Cage - June 2007

Two of Dr. Adams 3 DUIs occurred in March 2006 and April 2006. Only one (Mary 2003) occurred before his Oprah appearance.

The Medical Board complaint relating to the DUIs and overall alleged drinking problem was filed in 2007.

All the dates above were culled from TMZ's own reporting, which shows that NEARLY EVERY malpractice complaint, DUI arrest and Medical Board complaint were filed AFTER Dr. Adam's appearance on Oprah. So why would TMZ inquire about why Oprah failed to properly research Dr. Adams?? Kind of a silly question since Oprah doesn't have a crystal ball.

TMZ readers need to use their brains and stop repeating what they read, unless they think about it first. In this case, the sloppy journalism award goes to TMZ!

111. Please Oprah helps her own kind... Hell she should isn't that what White people have done since the founding of America... Legacy entrances to the most elite schools in our nation... To all you Oprah haters... Just stop why you are ahead, just because the woman has gotten something you don't which is a heart doesn't mean you have to hate on her.

112. To all those who are attacking Oprah -- shame on you. What have you done with your miserable little lives?

"She has no brains" Geeez really? Please, do tell.

"Oprah promotes black people" -- So what? It's her prerogative. The last I checked, it's called the 'Oprah Winfrey Show'. Start your own show and promote your kind (I triple dare you, you untalented poor trashy excuse for a human being). Besides, statistics show that most of her guests are non-black and she promotes non-black people 90+% of the time. Watch her awesome show, and please stop displaying your ignorance. The distance that people will go to look down upon black people is appalling. What's your problem? Are you of the impression that all black people should be beneath you? You're about 40 years too late. You poor, poor, sods.

#96 -- well said, and thanks for pointing this out. The rest of you, do your homework before yapping away..

#104, etc, etc-- pathetic. Do you have a life? What are you a 2nd grade dropout?

GO OPRAH, CONQUER THE WORLD. YOU ARE AT LEAST DOING SOMETHING WITH YOUR INFLUENCE!!!! I ADMIRE YOU AND WILL BE BEHIND YOU 100%....
YOU HAVE SINGLE HANDEDLY EMPOWERED ALOT OF WOMEN [& MEN]. YOU CARRY YOURSELF WITH SUPERIOR CLASS... DON'T LISTEN TO A MAJORITY OF THE NUMNUTS ON THIS FORUM -- JEALOUSLY KNOWS NO BOUNDS...

113. Of course Oprah helps people..but it is her show that buys the audience give aways and whatever else consititutes a make over or gifts. We do want to see Oprah fall because she now believes she is above us all and I say that as she tries to shove her beliefs down our throats via her show. She has gone out of the country to help build a school for underprivilaged girls..ones that she hand picks, but she really lost me when she did the interviews about the school and her voice and attitude was one who seemed holier then thou. Her voice was deeper, more monotoned and her hand jestures suggested to me that she had an aire of superiority. Good for her for being black and rich but it is amazing at how many people now believe in Oprah more then God..

114. It seems that the press is on an ongoing compaign to try to discredit and bring down Oprah Winfrey. How far fetched it is to connect the death of Kanye West’s mother to Oprah?! Even if she is recommended the plastic surgeon (which she has said is untrue), should she be blamed for that too?!

Come on, people! You in the press aren’t satisfied enough with the recent accusation against her school and books featured on her show. You are committed to linking everything that has gone wrong or could possibly gone awry to Oprah. She is influential, but not the reason for everyone else’s misgivings.

That’s the price of success in this world — envious people trying always to bring you down. And further , when you are a woman and a black person who has achieved unprecedented success and influence by all standards, you unfortunately become a target for the hateful vultures in our media and general society.

115. I want to warn everyone that Dr. Jan Adams has butchered many people including myself. What he does to people is devastating and it is sad that someone had to die before people would listen to little people like myself. Also, when I saw him on Oprah I felt so betrayed I didn't know who would beleive me now that he's been on Oprah. I really hope he loses everything and goes to prison (which I doubt but, I'm praying.)

116. TMZ , you bastards, please stop referring to DR.Donda West as 'Donda' or "Kanye West's mother" like yall are on a first name bases. She was the English Chair at a major university, lets respect her accolades in death and address her as deserved. Your're still saying "DR". Jan Adams arent you????

117. I called for 4 tickets around 22 times on a rotary dial phone for Oprah's first N.Y.C. show back in the late 80's. When a woman finally picked up she said she'd send me 4. I never got those tickets. Since then I've mailed her a letter, emailed her and even spoke to her Executive Producer Brian. He referred me to someone else that never returned my call. No one ever responded to any attempt to reach them to get tickets to this day. I think, with all due respect, that Oprah makes so much money she could care less. I have always promoted her to everyone and encouraged people to watch her since she first started the "Oprah Show". It really hurts me that as one of her major fans she has blatantly disregarded me all these years. It just goes to show that some people forget who helps them when things aren't so great. I have alwaysbeen a major supporter of those who I feel really care about the community. All my communication has been very respectful and I don't appreciate being disrespected by her and/or her staff. I in my own right help the community a lot. I never try to treat anyone like I'm better than them. Also, I share similar experiences to Oprah as a child which have always made me feel connected to her.~~~~~~~Respectfully & Sincerely, Ms. Victoria Mary Stong / Humanitarian, R&B Singer, 9/11 Family Member, 1st Responder & Former Ground Zero Volunteer Worker 9/11-11/10/01 & Civil Rights & Community Activist-Well Seasoned in Long Island City, N.Y.C.~~~~~~~Racism is an insult to God~~~~~~~

118. Reply to "Truth and honesty" (#90): You are correct to say that board certification is not required in plastic surgery in this country. FACT: board certification is not required in ANY specialty in this country. All one needs to practice medicine in this country is 4 years of medical school and 1 or 2 years of training in ANY medical specialty. After that you could go out and practice any kind of medicine. That means that a cardiologist could legally perform brain surgery, a psychiatrist could legally treat your lung cancer, a pediatrician could legally remove your retina, etc. As shocking as this is, our law makers have not altered this antequated law. The only reason why most doctors don't want to practice beyond their training is that their malpractice insurance will not cover them and they won't be able to get priviledges at hospital. My guess is that Dr. Jan Adams has neither. That is why he performed Dr. West's surgery in a surgery center located over Quiznos and Kinkos. If there were any medical concerns, the prudent thing would be to perform these operations in a hospital and keep her there for recovery. Obviously, hind site is always 20/20. Plastic surgery has seen a large influx of "cross-over" doctors from other field because there has been a lot of public interest, it's lucrative and it has a perception of being simple surgery. A board certification does not guarantee against death and major complications, but it means that those doctors show better judgement. One other point "Truth and Honest". If this doctor's personal life is irrelevant, then I ask you this question. How would you feel if while lying on the operating room table, you just found out that your surgeon drove to work drunk the morning of your surgery?

119. It took me 4mins to Goggle the Dr. Can I get a Job with Oprah with a clause not to talk to.

Money helps Money and its sad death came to bring attention to the surgery.

120. Has it been confirmed that Dr. Adams got into medical school through affirmative action? It is too bad that patients don't have access to that type of information. I don't want a doctor who couldn't have gotten into medical school if it were not for affirmative action. Lets make all these bleeding heart politicians that pass these laws for the black vote go to these affirmative action doctors. It is one thing to baby and coddle the athletes so they can get through college and still play in their sports, but it is another thing when they are graduating doctors, with the power to maim and kill, who shoud never have gotten into med school to begin with.
